How to dramatically improve your camera (picture and video) quality

The plastic on my back cover has actually had a crack in it for a while and I was messing around with the cammera a few weeks back and had the same results. Cover on, blurry, cover off, MUCH clearer. So any important photos now, I unclick the cover. Its not ideal but helps. Back to the drawing board though HTC.

WOW. Just WOW.

Wlliam. How many babies do you want and when - I am ready for you. ;)

I've been trying to improve the camera on this phone for ages which is so close to being perfect - BUT for the camera.

For all the skeptics -

A picture says it loud.

CHEAP HTC PLASTIC - FOCUSED ON RIGHT BOTTOM OF FAN = Hazey / over-exposed-look.

BACK COVER OFF, SAME PICTURE - FOCUSED ON RIGHT BOTTOM OF FAN ..

Weirdly - if you look at the two plastic covers on the back, one for the lens, one for the LED flash, the LED flash one doesn't seem as bad quality! Why has HTC fallen down on such a crucial component - here is a reasonable camera, now we are going to make it rubbish by putting this cheap plastic over it. It can't be down to cost, becuase you would have thought it would be the other way around - cheap camera, glass lens cover.

Anyway, now we all just need a replacement glass cover!

I'm interested in that replacement!!!!

Thanks added.

EDIT:

As a side-note, the 'cover-off' image seems to be a larger size. (could be down to the amount of information / light the camera is now able to take in? (Glad I got that 16GB SD card :) )
WOW, the comparison in your picture is unreal!!!!!

Badders, Did you manage to get anywhere with the glass covers? I'm up for one if you are still on with it mate. And has anyone found any scratches on their lens afdter taking off the plastic cover?

Thanks to OP for posting this

And has anyone found any scratches on their lens afdter taking off the plastic cover?

I got a load of scratched on my lense which really @#&$ me off. I was about to pay 15 quid for a new battery cover and I thought what the hell and puched the plastic cover off from the back. It's a little round clear (scratched) disc thats held in place by a film of adhesive. You can barely see its there.
Later on Iim going to cut a little square out of one of my screen protectors and pop it on, although saying that, the lense is that deep, scratching it is unlikely.

I'm still looking into this, just waiting for the glass people to send me a sample to play around with.

I thought it would be a little quicker than this, bare with me on this one.

In all fairness, I was a little disappointed with the photo quality the moment I took the phone out of the box.

Even brand new, the perspex lens cover will "cloud up" your photos. That's just what perspex does

I've took some photo's with mine and it's basicly the same.
I've had my phone for 4 months or so and keep it in my pocket all the time.

Well i have just received a new battery cover from Orange as my camera lens "accidently" got broken :o and after putting it on and taking a photo it's still less quality than with no lens cover, and this new battery cover is very clear, no scratches whatsoever, but its still cloudy. I have just taken two photos and the one without back cover on was far better quality than the one with the new back cover on. Think it might be best to leave the one on that has no lens cover on.

I called Orange today as well to have a winge about this whole shitty lens issue. The very helpful woman just decided to send out a new cover to see if that will solve the problem.

I also talked to HTC and this is their response:

Dear james baldwin,
James, is there a thin plastic membrane over the lens?

To which I replied.....No.........The technical department have not got back to me yet.

On a lighter note the sample arrived today. I beautifully cut circle of glass measuring 9mm across and .9mm thick. Its the thinest stock size they do, to get in any thiner they would have to sand it down and that would cost more. Because of this it slightly sticks out form the cover. I'm waiting on a unit cost for the glass.

I'll wack up some pictures of the glass in the case and some images taken through the glass.

Whoa, I just did a cover vs. no cover comparison in my own living room -- what a difference!

Sign me up for one of them glass replacements, too! If the new glass is thicker than the original plastic, it would be nice if the edges were at least sanded down a bit, so they're rounded. And/or had a raised edge, to protect the centre of the glass when the phone is placed on a flat surface?

FYI, I'm in Denmark if you're willing to ship there.

The unit cost for that would be astronomical.

Below is a profile image to the glass in the case. As you can see it does stand out slightly. Although that might not bother you if you have one of those rubber things round it.

Its also very tetchy getting the double sided tape stuck on the glass with the whole in the right place and....well its just all very tetchy.

It doesn't look to pretty either.

In all fairness, that images makes it looks worse than it is because of the flash.

It all depends what people want. I also don't want a load of people complaining about it sticking out and what not.

What do you want then?

good effort dude, i have a rubber back case on mine 24/7 so dont think the fact its not quite flush would bother me much. why bother with offering a fixing solution, i'd be happy just to whack some glue on it myself.

I was thinking about glue, but you dont have much room to glue it. I'm guessing it would have to be a super glue designed for use on glass. You would also only need a very very tiny amount as any excess might spread and get in the way of the lens.

I found some really thin and strong double sided adhesive paper. A standard whole punch is exactly the right size of hole needed for the middle of the lens cover.

I punched a hole with the hole punch on the double sided adhesive paper. Peel one side of the paper off and line that up so its in the middle of the glass and stick them together. Then with a sharp surgical blade trim the adhesive paper round the glass. Remove the other side of the adhesive paper and stick it to the back cover.

Hay presto.

yeah when i glued my piece of screen protector in i needed some miniscule drops of glue, cause as you say, i knew it would spread soon as i applied it :)

your sticky tape method sounds fine to me, count me in.

Balders, Have you taken any pictures with the new lens yet?
I'm certainly eager to have one if this solution works... my case would definitely cover the extrusion anyway.

And yes more than

hi

i tried to clean the lense today with not much effect, the difference with the back on and off is incredible! Just a bit concerned with taking the plastic lense cover out, i know then you cover it with a screen protector but what is this talk about "foam" i really don't want any dust inside but phone by taking the lense cover out but on the other hand i don't like the sound of foam.
any suggestions or help?

thanks

Granted, that makes sense. But I just had to ask, right? :o Your argument of covering that lip with a back cover makes sense and is probably a much better solution all round (as it protects not only the glass).

As for your "thin double sided tape with a hole in it" solution, that sounds very fine (better, IMHO, than super glue which might run and ruin the glass and/or cover).

What I want, then, is a ball-park price and available-by date. :p But take your time, quality is worth waiting for and I'm not about to sign up for any photo contests anyway!

BTW, good photo work up there.

any ideas? really annoying i cant take good photos with cover on :(

Would sending a complaint to HTC by the masses help? We (I) payed enough money for what is a high-end product and therefore expecting good quality on all fronts (so also on the back cover ). HTC needs to fix this because it makes the camera useless.

After reading this thread I checked my pictures and I never noticed how blurry some of the pictures were!!!

Tried the simple "toothpaste" fix and it works brilliantly! Not as good as with the back off(pointless really) but a darn sight better. Time to get a proper case rather than a pouch I have now.
