Root How To Install The Icarus MOD

The link you have posted in your troubleshooting MMS guide, doesn't work. The file is only about 800kb. The mms.apk app from myascend that was posted in the icarus thread (now gone) is about 1.5mb.

Caused me quite a bit of grief (had to dig around the myascend forum to get the correct file) so you might want to change that.

Other than that, great guide, thank you!

ok figured out the problem for the fast reboot.....once I install the Icarus MOD, will I still be able to use the themes for the launcher?
 
Yes you will. Icarus has LauncherPro and the default Canvas installed, from which you can choose at first run. You can also install and use other themes/launchers as per usual, verified by the fact that I'm using Icarus and currently testing Go Launcher.
 
OK, stupid question. I'm going to wait until at least the 21st when the 2.2 update has been rumored to be released. If there is no word of an update then or shortly after, I will try the Icarus mod. Now the stupid question. Does Icarus use system files or something from the SD card after it is installed, or can I swap the card for another after installing? I have an extra 2GB SD card that I would like to use for the install, and then put my card with my music and other files back in afterwards.
 
Part of the setup after installing Icarus (in the guide) is partitioning the SD card to work for Apps2SD, so swapping out the card after the fact would remove the ability to install apps on the SD card. Ideally, you'll want to get a larger card, or transfer your files to the phone after the install is complete.

I personally used a 4GB card with a 1GB partition for apps. That leaves me a theoretical 3GB for anything else. Actual numbers are 989MB for a2sd partition, and 2.72GB for the storage partition. The guide recommends 256MB for the a2sd partition, but if you plan on downloading a lot of apps, I would highly recommend going larger so that you don't have to redo anything later.
 
OMG!!!!!!! I installed the Icarus MOD.....and it's perfect. Thank you very much to everyone that helped and answered my questions....you guys freakin rock!!!!!

I'll be waiting till I get a bigger card then. Part of the reason I got this phone was so I wouldn't have to carry around a phone and an mp3 player and take off my headphones every time the phone rings.
 
Thank you everyone who made this possible!!! The ascend is my first smart phone and nothing pained me more than judging which apps to download simply by file size. I partitioned 1 gig for apps and I am having the time of my life! Haha! Take that world! Great instructions! Everything worked like a charm!

Thanks for the positive feedback on this. Did you have any probs with your mms? If not perhaps you could help Twist..(sp) with his mms probs. :)
 
First things first for those who are still having MMS issues: Have you rebooted your phone? This is a necessary step.

I am getting a coworker to exchange MMS messages with me so I can see whether it actually works on my Icarus-modded phone, as I rarely send MMS or receive them.
 
First i am rooted with z4root (did that with jazz help thanx a bunch), i also have the titanium pro for my back up. before i begin do i DL the clockwork mod? if so where do i find it and whats the best one to use? is ROM manager an app? if so is that the name of it? and i really fear formatting my sd card if i make the back up will "everything" be put back? im not sure how to do that either. i know how to put it on my computer but is it as easy to get it back? im with cricket and i have windows xp will these instructions work for me? i did the step by step rooting by myself with no problems and my phone runs great but my issue now is my internal memory is almost full and i got a message saying im low on space

I wanted to thank all involved with this. I was also very glad to find this guide and I am very happy with the Icarus mod, it's like having a completely new phone. A lot more responsive, the aesthetics though, don't get me started! It's beautiful, I'm really digging on a lot of the little tweaks that really make a difference with daily use. It truly should have been what Huawei loaded this thing! Those guys at Huawei could totally learn something from these guys! I can't wait to show my buddy, he's been thinking about going to Cricket and getting a Huawei Ascend after seeing mine.


Haha, on a side note though, I noticed after I first installed the Icarus mod my phone froze a few times(and a couple force crashes). Not like during installation but just normal running of the OS (OS-ish right? haha). I don't know if it maybe had to do with me removing the sd card many times (safely of course un mounting from phone and safely removing from the pc). Oh and also after re-installing a lot of apps etc... I haven't had a problem since though, it seems to be running just fine now.

I have no idea if that is why but I do think that while you are attempting to get the mms prob worked out it might be best to uninstall or freeze anything that might conflict with it.

I really like Handcent but had to dump it recently because of force closes. I got GO SMS and like it just as much, maybe more.

Keep us in the loop. GL with the mms fix!

I'm always forgetting to 'safely remove' my SD card. LOL But so far it hasn't hurt anything.

Technology scares me! I'm always afraid I'm going to break this stuff haha.


Oh and damn I seem to be having a bit of a problem. It's with sending long messages, like after a text goes beyond 2 (pages I guess?) it refuses to send. I seem to be able to send shorter messages. I don't know about picture messaging etc, but I did try the MMS fix that I saw below the install guide and I just did it, followed everything to the letter, but I guess it's still not working. I'm going to keep looking for an answer! I hope it's a simple fix, hell it could have nothing to do with the Icarus mod and maybe something with Cricket, who knows! but I know I like sending long messages and short ones!
