Root How to quit sense

trigunesq

Lurker
I have eyed cyanogenmod for a long time but i started with sense (obviously) so going to MikG was really simple and a huge improvement. I tried cyanogenmod but whenever i go to it, i miss so much of the synergy and switch back to mikG within a day or two. Is this just a matter of opinion and the way i use the phone? or is there something better about cyanogen that i keep missing?

It's probably a matter of opinion. I too started with sense roms, and here I sit, having been AOSP for months (save a day or two trying out new sense roms). I'd guess that eventually sense will lose interest to you, and you'll try AOSP and enjoy it. Then (as I'm sure will happen to me soon [maybe not with ICS right around the corner]) you'll jump back to sense. I think these things are cyclical.

i love both types of roms actually. i used to be only a sense guy, but i tried cm7 and then found the tiamat kernel and i saw such a huge difference in performance and battery life that i quickly became an aosp fan. so nowigo back and forth with the roms. aosp roms, especially cm7 does take a little more work to get things setup correctly, but they were worth it for me. but that is me and it is really a matter of opinion.

You don't really quit one to go to another. Yeah I'm sure there are those who have stuck with on or the other out of their own experience. I love AOSP ROMs and I Love that they are really made with app whores like me in mind. Sense is great that it has good eyecandy out the box and delivers a flash that is only a flash to do. AOSP is a bit more work. Sense is easier to set up and because they are built of the base ROM most all functions work. AOSP is built from ground up so some functions are still a bit buggy.

Sense VS AOSP is like Windows VS Apple VS LINUX yeah they are all operating system however they do things in a very different way.

AOSP all the way on my Hero. Sense 3.5 on the EVO.
It's all relative to user preference. :D

+1 with the Hero and AOSP:D

The hardware obviously is different between the Hero and Evo and since the Evo does not have any trouble running sense roms, I haven't been flashing AOSP roms. On the Hero, different story. And since I ran CM5, CM6 and CM7 on the Hero, it's nice running a sense rom on the Evo:)

I run MikG as well and I have tried to like CM7...really tried. I used to try it out for a few hours and give up but this time I ran it for several days straight. Ultimately I just had too many issues that were painful to setup and get working. It really bugged me, plus I couldn't find a keyboard that was perfect, etc. Some things were replaced easily, some were slightly annoying but I could live with, and others just weren't going to cut it for me.

I don't really have time at the moment but would eventually like to post my experience switching to CM7 and why I ultimately came right back to MiKG after a few days. That being said however, I had to look for some replacements for the Sense widgets because I started using Go Launcher EX instead of HTC Sense as my launcher. So a few things that might help:

1. Download Fancy Widgets or Beautiful Widgets from the market for the clock/weather widget. I use Fancy Widgets but they are pretty much the same.

2. Download Android Pro Widgets for a calendar that is very close the Sense calendar widget. Note that on AOSP ROMs you won't see Facebook events like you do in Sense on the calendar. I just exported my FB calendar and imported it into my Google calendar. Then things worked fine in CM7.

3. Download Elixir2 and the corresponding Elixir2 Widget to get a great toggle widget. It's highly configurable and I have it setup to be a 5x1 space. It has the same 4 widgets that come by default on the Evo (4G, Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS) and then I also added a toggle switch between sound profiles (normal, vibrate, silent).

Maybe I'll get around to posting my experience but I just couldn't stick with CM7 even though I really tried this time. I have tried many ROMs and just always wind up back on MikG.

AOSP is barebones that's why it feels that way. ;)

There's a lot of alternatives out there, just try a bunch of stuff out until you find what you like. I tried go launcher recently, and I was pleasantly suprised! Cool screen transitions, lots of effects and everything is themeable. Widgets out the wazoo, they've got a good thing going there. Just have to clean it up a tad and optimize everything and sense would have a serious competitor.

Agree that GoLauncher is great, and the GOWidgets (with the transparent theme) are a thing of beauty. I would highly recommend anyone to try them out. Android Pro Widget are good, but I think I like the GOWidgets just a little bit better. For anyone trying to decide between the two, I think Fancy Widgets is better than Beautiful Widgets. The HTC knockoffs on FW are much better than what's available on BW in my opinion. I have both and I never use BW anymore.

For functionality and eye candy, it's tough to beat Sense, but I like the customization ease on AOSP and it's a bit faster. The fact that I can use the theme chooser to change my theme in about 10 seconds is something that I can't get from Sense. I have just grown really used to the AOSP look and feel. I find myself not even preferring to use the Sense widgets anymore, although I'll admit that the Sense Bookmarks widget is second to none.

And while there are good kernels for battery life on Sense roms, I get better battery with Tiamat 3.3.7 than I do with any Sense kernel.

Hey thanks! I didn't use the GO calendar widget because I didn't like the theme (and didn't know I could download themes for their widgets), but the transparency theme looks great. I just replaced android pro widgets with this one because you can swipe up/down to change months. On the APW calendar you have to tap these tiny little buttons on the bottom to scroll between months. I guess my fingers are too big or something and I could rarely get it to work on the first or even second try. The GO team strikes again!

The easiest way to quit sense roms = start wanting great battery life. :)

Try cm7.1 or deck's aosp build with a tiamat kernel ( I use 4.0.4,my phone likes that one)..beat battery life I can find without having to keep mobile data off all day.lol

For me, I think it started with the fact that I really am paranoid about the vibration motor (or whatever) of the phone, breaking or wearing out. And I have a bit of OCD (not really, but a bit obsessive) about the layout of widgets and application on home screens. Sense vibrates when moving, ADW doesn't. I don't really see using sense if you aren't *using* sense (launcher). But that's me. And I really haven't given the GB sense roms that fair of a change to be perfectly honest. And I remember loving myn's warm 2.2. I probably had that for two to three weeks right after I rooted (aka in the FLASH everything always phase, so that's pretty big lol).

Different strokes I suppose... really the great thing about android am I right?
I'll probably try out a sense 3.5 rom sometime (but without partitioning the sd card I'll be at a disadvantage hmm..). Well.

I don't really see using sense if you aren't *using* sense (launcher).

I use a Sense ROM (MikG) with GO Launcher and do this for a few reasons:

1. I like the Sense dialer and contacts application. When I tried CM7 I was using GO contacts/dialer which was better than the default, but seemed to be a bit laggy to open and close. The Sense dialer seems to launch perfectly.

2. Sense also does better syncing with Facebook contacts and pulling in their pictures. I tried joining contacts in the People app but in CM7 it seems like I still had problems here and there.

3. I hate the default Android keyboard and have become accustomed to the HTC_IME keyboard. Yes, I can flash this keyboard but it doesn't include the arrow keys so the keys are wider and it's like using a whole new keyboard. Also tried Swiftkey and Smart keyboard. I could probably get used to Smart -- my only complain was that the key to toggle symbols was on the left side of the space bar instead of the right side (which is where it's at on my HTC keyboard). I could probably live with that though, it's just not what I'm used to.

4. I use the HTC Flashlight app quite often and it's just better than Torch. There are 3 different intensity levels and you don't have to turn it off and then agree that you might break your phone every time you want to change between them.

5. The MikG lock screen uses the Sense 3 lock screen which allows shortcuts on it. I prefer this over gestures -- I had several times where my gestures weren't recognized unless I drew them perfectly.

There are probably some other reasons too that I can't think of right now. My battery life is actually pretty darn good MikG. I have even posted some videos of my battery life on youtube. I got 32 hours with 50 minutes of voice calls, 30 minutes of words, 41 minutes of GPS, bluetooth on 100% of the time, etc.

I have never tried flashing Tiamat but I heard it's great. If I can fix some of the remaining issues I have with AOSP I might try it. Maybe when CM9 comes out I'll give it a shot again. I have really wanted to like CM7 and tried but always wind up back on MikG.

True.

I haven't had any problems with FB, but it does makes sense [NO PUN]that sense would sync better (especially with the FB/sense app)

Yup, I'll agree with that. I should flash one of those old keyboard apks I have floating around...
........

Yeah, I did enjoy that on Mik when I used it. But with AOSP I use the rotatory dialer with apps on that (I really just use it to mute/unmute the volume w/o unlocking).
Bolded my responses.
They *really* need to work on the default keyboard. I though the GB keyboard was supposed to be really good... eh.
