Help HTC desire crashes and restarts randomly

Hi

It sounds like your local repairer or distributor just hasn't fixed the problem at all. Perhaps you should show them this thread and tell them to call HTC?

On another note I got a customer satisfaction call from HTC yesterday. Told them how it was. And get this - they were shocked to learn that their repair tracking site does not work!

"Finally, do you have any other comments Sir?"
"Erm... yes, your repair tracking website doesn't work"
"Really, oh wow, are you sure?"
"Yes - Its never worked, has nobody honestly told you this?"
"No its the first I've heard..."
"Dude, there are several 20 page plus topics on the internet about this crashing problem, every single one of the mentions how your repair tracking site doesn't work"

I LOLed after.

OMG!!!! :o Unbelievable!!!!!!!

My Backup Pro, which I had stored as an APK app on my PC.
Would please let me know how to do that. I am a newbie and I am afraid I don't know how to. I have bought the app from the mobile.

*touch wood* Mine's been fine since I got it back including several long runs in the car using satnav while it's been on charge. This is about as hot as I can run the thing and it's been rock solid.

Still waiting for a reply to my letter of complaint, but I didn't get it in the post until last week.

I just typed out a huge reply only for the database to crash.. seems the desire is not alone..
In short, Thanks :-)

The problem, I think could be a defectivly installed app looping and overheating the processor. Also apps which are cpu hungry, BUT I think it could also be a linked to a battery charging issue, how these come together, I don't know. This only happened to me once and when I got, what I thought was a dodgy download of Google Maps update. The phone did seem hot but I've used the phone whilst charging before with no problems.

Good luck to us all and thanks again Chrispie33

Still having rebooting loop after replacing my motherboard :(

Oh my God!!! I just can't believe it! Sorry for asking such a stupid question but since I have soooo bad experience with repair store....are you sure you had your MB replaced, (another IMEI?)...sorry again...I really don't want to offend you but I just can't believe it!!!

...I agree with you to the certain point, especially after what scooby_r wrote, but what's the point of introducing market with thousands of applications where you can just pray that you would be so lucky and install the application which will not cause your phone to crash! I mean...this is ridiculous!

Now I'm at the point where I can't do ANYTHING...literary ANYTHING for more than 15 minutes where phone will not crash and freeze on the first htc screen.
I can swear the phone becomes so hot that if I don't take out the battery it will self-combust...I swear to God!
My last resort is to replace phone at the store, I'm their user for more than 10 years now and they have to do it...they just have to! Last night I wrote a "nice" letter to them, so now I'm waiting for a call or an answer.
I know the new phone is not a guarantee but I just don't want spend my time, money and nerves to this s***.

I mean this is starting to be so tragic that is funny!

Yup..checked it already, it came with a new IMEI. It was working fine for the first few weeks and had my first reboot while playing angry birds. I was literally playing it for like 5-6 minutes. Had to do a soft reset to get my phone to boot.

Again, my second reboot happened when i was using the Camera. I don't have any ATK installed, most of my apps are in my SD. Have lots of space in my internal memory. The most annoying thing is that if reboots even when the temperature of the battery isn't that high, i'd say like 29-31 degrees.

Why do we all think it's OUR fault, actually. Remember windows 95? If you are as oooold as me :-) and last night my desire protected against an endless loop with a force stop message so???? Who's to say what this is.. Maybe, just maybe.. There IS a God.. with a SENSE of humour. Hope mine doesn't crash again tho, pray pray :-).

Actually, I was amazed, I found out the other day you can phone with these things, imagine that!

I really don't know what else to say to all this!...

Hopefully I'm wrong, but it seems to me that in time we'll have more and more reports about recurring reboot problems, even with new motherboards.

Maybe it's really something to do with software and apps we're installing and having on our Desires. Please keep in mind that I'm really desperate here!

Just a suggestion...maybe we can list the software installed on our phones to see if (statistically) some piece of (cr)app will catch the eye....of course, only third party apps, or at least those that aren't installed initially with Froyo....

What do you think?

I have following installed:

1. Advanced Task Killer
2. All-In-1-Calc Free
3. Beautiful Widgets
4. Color Note
5. ES File Explorer
6. eWallet Viewer
7. Flikie Wallpapers HD
8. Gallery 3D
9. GOTO
10. Yahoo Mail
11. OnOff Widget Pack
12. Quick App Clean Cache
13. Vignette
14. VLC Remote
15. Volume Locker

...that's it!

Sorry if I'm off topic, but there's nothing else I can do except asking for this forum's members help!

Mine was definitely a hardware fault. My phone worked fine then just borked on me even though I'd not added any more software. Got it back, installed everything I'd lost, updated to Froyo (problem existed on 2.1), added more software... and it's been fine.

Will be taking my paperwork into the shop latter this week. Had my desire since July, but suddenly rebooting when warm in the last 2 days. Just watching the video at the beginning of the thread killed the phone. Twice. Still running V2.1

Argh..mine restarted again when i was charging my phone. Went into reboot loop, had to make several soft reset attempts to get through the reboot loop. Sigh, already replaced my mainboard and problem is still recurring.

I had a similar problem with overheating causing reboots a few months back and the diagnosis was that the heatsink on the cpu (or gpu) was faulty. It was extremely hot about 2cm above the trackpad and it would appear that is where the main onboard cpu is located. I had battery monitoring apps installed and the temp of that was fairly cool but the metal SD and SIM slots above the cpu were absolutely roasting. A new mobo fixed it and thankfully I have had no problems since but due to the amount of reports about overheating/rebooting it would appear that the quality checks and tests never managed to find this particular fault before production started.

That's exactly what I'm experiencing! Like I said, it seems that, if I don't pull the battery out, phone would be in flames!

Now I'm in dilemma, should I be persistent and keep on asking my mobile operator for phone replacement or should I wait (...I don't know for how long?!? ) for motherboards to arrive on repair store stock?

What do you say???

Man..if that's the case i don't think replacing the motherboards would actually fix it. Probably less frequent reboots like what i'm experiencing now. When did you have your motherboard replaced? i had mine replaced a month ago, so far experienced 3 rebooting loops while playing games and 3G usage.

I am in the same situation.. My phone developed the overheating fault in the middle / late end of September. By the time Vodafone got their finger out and sent me the repair pack it was the 24th of September. The repair was "estimated to take 5 to 6 working days"

riiiight !

2nd Of November (yes nearly 6 weeks) my phone comes back.

inside the package was a letter from Vodafone customer services saying.. and I quote

"due to the nature of the fault it will not be possible to repair it within a reasonable timeframe "

(where that's true... 5 and a bit weeks is FAR FROM REASONABLE)

it continues

"We have therefore replaced it with a similar phone that has been carefully serviced and refurbished by our repair centre"

carefully serviced and refurbished?? that is a pile of hot steaming manure !! "replaced it with a similar phone" I'll give you that.. SO similar in fact it even comes complete with the EXACT SAME PROBLEM I had before I send it off nearly 6 weeks ago. in fact IF ANYTHING IT'S WORSE!!

it no longer random reboots.. oh no, it now vibrates 4 or 5 times and switches itself off. and refuses to come back on until it's cooled down.

THIS IS INEPTITUDE ON A SCALE THAT DEFIES BELIEF.

So they carefully serviced it?? it developed this fault within 4 to 5 mins of me turning it on last night. Phoned Vodapain's customer service this morning and being given the run around. Apparently I can't just walk into a shop and demand a replacement new phone.. so they are issuing me with another refurbished phone.

this is ridiculous .. Vodafone customer service is an Oxymoron.. with emphasis on the MORON part..

grrr.

oh yeah.. never try complaining on the Vodafone forum.. Big Red Brother likes to ensure only sweetness and light exists on their hallowed turf. They Strategically deleted my complaint, why they don't want the filthy rabble reading bad things about them do they ?!

Hi guys! For those of you who are waiting to get your phone back for motherboard replacement.Just wanted to wish you guys good luck with your speedy repairs. I'm gonna send back my phone to HTC and hoping they could replace my phone with a new one. Had my motherboard replaced like a month ago and got my 6th reboot so far. Had my last reboot when i was organizing apps with folder organizer. It's hard to believe even running that would cause a reboot. Sigh..

Nothing to do with apps, as you see from the various posts many even after factory reset still have the problem (no apps installed) just like me. Even with no apps installed it does this.

Just spoke to HTC, my desires (t-mobile branded UK serial HT07 AMOLED) mainboard has been replaced (roughly 5 working days to fix. They are about to send it back to me!!

Fingers crossed as the guy on the phone mentioned that although in some cases mainboard replacements did not fix the problems most peoples issues have been resolved. Eventually he asked if i was satisfied with the service, i said "well see if it works first".

I hope it works, because when it does, its a great phone, kills my iPhone 3gs (in every department apart from games) hands down. If it doesnt work, hey ill never buy anything manufactured by HTC again. At least i have got a 2 year warranty, lets just hope htc continuously provides updates for those 2 years.

Hi guys and gals has anyone tried underclocking their HTC Desire to try and avoid this problem? (if it is indeed a heat-sync / cpu problem).

Thanks

JnB

An update on my case...

After my "nice" letter to mobile provider and repair store, I got a call from repair store to... check this out: "immediately...if it's possible, of course, bring Desire, and MB will be replaced in a day!!!"
I was there at 2PM and took the phone back at 4PM...with MB replaced!...on the same day!!!!!!
They even issued a new warranty, starting from that day on! I have to admit, that was surprise!

Since then (that was three days ago) everything is fine....no reboots, crashes or freezes.
I reinstalled all apps back on except Advanced Task Killer...
Yesterday evening I took my time and tortured phone for 2hours with browsing, installing, uninstalling, multitasking, messaging, gaming...it drained battery completely, but, fortunately, no crashes or reboots.
The phone was extremely hot, roasting, but working fine.

I just hope it will stay that way....for how long?...I don't know!...I hope, for my health sake, for a very long time!
