HTC Desire Tips & Tricks [READ ME]

Two actions to unlock is good, as its stops the phone doing stuff in your pocket if you inadvertently press the power button briefly

You can put the phone to sleep by briefly pressing the power button.

In order to use the phone again you have to press the power button briefly, AND then slide the screen unlock bar.

Two actions when only one should suffice. Any ideas how to disable the screen lock/unlock?

With the app Lockbot you can customise the lock screen,it allows things like shake to unlock.

I dont know if this would work for everyone but if you are running low on internal memory just reboot your phone.

I just did it and somehow gained 20mb approx of internal memory!!

Anybody got a clue how that works? lol

Yep seriously,i had 17mb of internal memory left, rebooted and when i checked it again it said over 40mb left.

MyLock works. There are different versions on the market, so find the one that works for you.

I would recommend, though, using WidgetLocker. It allows you to put widgets on your lockscreen, which makes it way more functional. I use that in combination with More Icons and am able to put a lot of my most used programs right up front.

Is it at all possible to remove the clock/time for the status bar? Kind of see it as being pointless considering there is a clock on the home screen.

Going bump this question. Of all the things the Desire could do, surely this is one of them.

Can anyone help me, everytime i connect my desire it imports snap shot pics of every web site i have looked at, is it possible to stop this happening?

delete the folder .bookmark_thumb1 on your sdcard and create an empty file named .bookmark_thumb1

Hi, I have 2 similar issues Lekky with downloading photos from my desire.

The first is every time I download photos from my phone it downloads all the album art onto my pc, which I don't want.

The second is that I only want to do an incremental download of my photos but can't find how to do it. ( If I'm not being clear by that I mean I don't want to download photos I already downloaded last time I did it.)

What's happening is every time I go to download a few shots I took to my PC I'm getting every photo I've got on the phone downloaded as well as all the album art and any other photo the phone can get it hands on.

I note the fix you had for the web pages issue - was wondering if there was something to do to resolve this?

Thanks

Hi guys just got me a desire today an awsome ph! installed maps brut thanks for posting that is awsome, does it use data, or can it be used offline?

Whilst on maps it DOES use data (except for cached information, current route). It does NOT have "on board" map data like Nokia for instance.

Cheers

Guys, (hope this is an ok place to post a Q in) is there a way of password protecting or encrypting media files like videos or pics? I like to show my pics and vids off but the Mrs might hit me with a brick if she saw some of the things I got up to

No help to you, but thought I'd just add :-) :-) :-)

A quick question about GPS - if it is switched on but no application is using it the GPS icon doesn't appear in the notification bar... but is it actually using the GPS and therefore eating up battery?

Like WiFi, it should only really be active when connected.

No if the GPS symbol is not in the taskbar it is not on or using battery. It will only come on (and using battery) if you are using an app that uses GPS like google maps or the camera and then you will see the GPS symbol on the taskbar.

Hey Lekky,

Sorry for not replying before - wasn't being ignorant I've been away for a few days!

I'm downloading my photos by cable - when i connect the phone to the pc and attach it is a hard drive my pc picks up there are photos on there and asks to download them, just like my camera. Only thing is my camera only downloads photos not previously downloaded phone doesn't just dumps everything each time.

Cheers

thanks for the info and here is a quick question:
is there any app that let me choose wich app can use data and wich one doesn't?
I am traveling a lot and roaming is quite expensive but I use webtext to send text while roaming as it's cheaper. but everytime I connect the data to send the text the phone use a lot as all the app use data. any ideas how to allow only webtext to connect to the internet?
thanks

If the MOVE TO SD CARD button is greyed out that app cannot be moved to SD card as the coder has not included A2SD+ code within the app.

There's a list here:

http://androidforums.com/android-applications/105650-froyo-apps-2-sd-list.html

of apps that can be moved....

Unh.

This is a good free app to tell you which of your apps can be moved to the SD card: -

SDMove - Android app on AppBrain

It gives you colour-coded results: -

Green = App is already on the SD card
Yellow = App is not on the SD card, but can be moved there
Blue = App prefers being on the SD card and is there
Cyan = App prefers being on the SD card, but is not there
Red = Cannot be moved to the SD card

You can click on any item in the list and move it to the SD card or back to the phone (where the option is available).
