I just had a thought, there is an alternative:

"Verizon Wireless has confirmed that their website was hacked last week, with someone posting false information about an update to the HTC Droid Incredible. Verizon has determined that no customer or other private information was taken, and stated it seemed to be done by a hacker out of Cupertino, CA. No word yet on any intent, or if this is related to the disproportionately large number of suicides reported shortly after news of the hacking was released.

VZW reps don't know anything. Think about it, they are (and no offense to them, this is just an analogy) basically equivelent to an employee of say....Burger King. Now does employee #19 from some random BK somewhere know the inner workings of corporate management, or have ANY clue what they are up to? Of course not, the employee comes in to work one day and sees a new item on the menu and thinks "Hmmm, didn't hear anything about that".

Some people place way to much authority on basic VZW reps; they have absolutely NO idea about stuff like this, beyond the same speculations we have. They are trained to handle customers, sell products, process returns, give basic advice (Is it plugged in and charged?), etc. They are not given any insight into anything upper level.

i been thinking about rooting for a while now - but see the news that 2.2 is coming out. can i use the unrevoked root process after the ota update?

The truth.

Word over at XDA is that the RUU (and so the OTA, too) are not compatible with the current unrevoked rooting process method popular on our phones. However, supposedly the same general exploits remain open, as well as some other older methods; and it seems as though rooting on this update is a "not now, but soonish".

I'd say people both rooted and unrooted should be able to flash this RUU with little worry if they would rather do that than wait for OTA. The RUU shouldn't interfere with future OTA's; but it WILL temporarily keep you from rooting, and therefore installing custom ROMs, for at least the immediate future. Like I said though, over at XDA it sounds like rooting this update isn't going to be a major issue.

Confirmed!

VZW own product info confirms Froyo tomorrow for the Incredible.
What does this mean?

See this post from earlier in the thread.

It includes a screenshot of Verizon's webpage (including the URL in the screenshot as well as instructions on how to get there):
65Ps

Is there any proof that there is a SCHEDULED update? I think all we know is that shits in place for an update. I don't think we know that it has been scheduled yet.

How about this, we wait and watch the story play out over the coming days???

I posted the docs in two threads and you asked me for links (proof I assume) in both so I then added the links to the docs on the official VZW site.

The bottom line is VZW always posts those docs a day or 2 prior to an OTA update so that sounds like a scheduled update to me! I really don't know what else I can tell you if you need me to prove everything I say all of a sudden.

Has anyone tried the RUU update yet? My phone is rooted with a custom rom but If the official update doesnt perform anymore better than the froyo rom I have now I won't accept the OTA. The only I'm looking for at this point is improved call quality

to T-Mac...How do you back-up files from the phone? (mine is a DINC)...or could anybody help me concerning backing up my files?

i am at work...can't search right now.

thx in advance

ROFL. Funny...but I wonder how many people will fully understand the Cupertino part:) Being this forum, I would hope a fair amount though. However: I do seriously doubt anyone in Cupertino knows enough about computers to be able to find the Verizon website...yet alone hack it:P

Seveal people have said that root users should revert to stock before the OTA (assuming you don't mind losing root). Is it not possible to receive the OTA and successfully apply it if you are root but otherwise stock or is it simply recommended to revert back first?

It is just good to know that VZW has announced the 2.2 OTA because that means that the problems with Froyo that the Droid owners had have been solved. Perhaps it was better not to have been the firsts Verizon phone owners to receive the update. Sorry about you people with Droids which got your phone bricked, but I'm glad that we Incredible owners will not likely have that problem. When 2.1 came out for the Eris everyone else had already gotten it and all of the bugs had been worked out. I never had a single problem with the Eris 2.1 OTA. Hopefully that will be true for the 2.2 on our Incredibles.

It's recommended as a precautionary move. There are countless variables to different people with rooted phones, being as you can change all sorts of different stuff once rooted. The only safe bet is to revert to stock.

I will root as well but I prefer a ROM built around the official 2.2 release not from the leaked ones.

From my understandings, once you apply the 2.2 OTA you will NOT be able to root, I may be wrong but that was the last I knew.

Unless you run unrevoked forever with the s-off, and then un-root, and then accept the OTA, you will then be able to re-root as with the unervoked forever it makes it so you can still keep root.

I'll believe it when my phone shows it available. I will post here as soon I possible once the update is complete. Hopefully, I will have an answer by Sunday night.

i should be able to not accept the OTA update correct? i can't decide whether or not to root now, or get the update and wait until unrevoked has one, or just wait until its out, then update.

Correct. You will get a popup asking if you would like to update now or not. From that point on, you "should" be able to just go into About Phone->System Updates and download it when you are ready.

According to the Verizon website, it is a mandatory update and will keep prompting you every 30 minutes until you apply the update. However, if you are roaming, it will not do that.

I dont know if any of you have noticed, but i am currently on verizons site under the INCREDIBLE details TAB and it says ""OS: Android 2.2, Google Experience Device """ Check it out yourselfs!!

Set Your Location=

Click on the "Details" tab and under "Features" it says it has Android 2.2 already with it??? WTF???

Are you guys thinking what i am thinking????

Is there anything i missed???:confused:

Installed the RUU, playing around a bit....

Things of note:
-The Verizon boot animation is replaced by the mechanical "Droid" voice from the beginning of the commercials, and a spinning Droid logo.....very cool.
-There is a flashlight app built in, with adjustable LED brightness settings!
-720p, Move to SD, etc, it's all here
-Things seem much snappier and faster, as is FroYo's job
-VZ Navigator is not able to be uninstalled, and there are a couple of other new "junk" apps as well

Overall it seems to be a major improvement on something that was already majorly awesome. The minor bit of extra bloatware is annoying....but whats 1 or 2 more icons? I know we all already have a sea of them in our all apps menu.

It's also worth noting that it is heavily recommended that you wipe after an update; and the RUU process wipes the memory for you before installing. So honestly, considering you should wipe at some point anyway after OTA.....you might as well just install the RUU. If you aren't worried about root ATM (though it likely will come soon), install away; if you are, S-Off and install away. No point in waiting around for an OTA to roll in when this is the exact same thing.
