I5700 Galaxy Spica/lite officially gets Android 2.1

don't worry xxTJxx and Norwegian1 - the previous poster's comment sounds like bitter sour grapes and jealousy to me!!

hey if samsung sucks balls as they clearly seem to, and patience with them never pays off, whatcha gonna do? And the satisfaction rate with odin appears to be very high. Just need to flash a great firmware!

Question for you xxTJxx: you mentioned about simlock - was your spica simlocked, and did you remove it?

But redpyramid, how do we know the firmwares on the net ARE official?

From what's been posted on this so far, most are Beta versions, and not for general consumption, thus not official.

oh indeed I didn't say they were, you are correct most are unofficial and custom, but the official can now be acquired, I'm sure - and even it will be tweaked and optimized in future customs

I think the key is: read, read, read, research, research, research - the spica community is now a valuable one

I am sick of waiting for f-ing Samsung, they are so full of horsesh*t

I would say it would be difficult to go far wrong with I570EXXJCE or I570EXXJCF

But as I say, how do you know these actually are the official versions of the same named firmware?

How do you know they arent simply versions someones customised to record your personal info, or use as part of a bot net?

Unless it comes from an official Samsung source, as in NPS or Kies, then you have no idea what else the ROM you load actually contains.

Since the dawn of smart phones there have been malware laiden ROMs that appear official, from names that people say they trust that have proved to be full of bad stuff.

Just be careful what you load on your devices. Apps, ROM's etc can all contain nasty surprises, even from so called unofficial trusted sources.

there are strong arguments on both sides, and I accept all your points, they're important considerations - the question is: are you unhappy with 1.5? (I am) -> Do you want to wait interminably on samsung, who possibly given their reputation will never sort out this rollout?
If not, I recommend you first do an inordinate amount of reading and research, and then be judicious, use your best judgement, but don't act before you've armed yourself with EVERY piece of knowledge you need. Can samsung firmwares be trusted? I would lean towards trying them out, but trust is subjective, each individual has to make their own judgement call.

whats 1.5 done to you... its doing a good job of running my phone..

Some people replace new cars even when their old cars are working.

I mean, 1.5 is running fine but if those claims about 2.1 equating to better battery life are taken as a grain of salt, not a bad idea right?

a few things, I'll give you the top reason - maybe it's worse on my handset, but landscape texting is a stuttering pain in the ahole. My fingers are not narrow enough to make portrait texting (which is smooth) practical, I have to go horizontal for the larger touchscreen keys, but then the smoothness goes out the window, which I understand is a 1.5 bug - in short, with 1.5 this is the worst texting phone I've ever had, and I understand 2.1 restores perfect smoothness in both landscape and portrait.

My phone didnt seem to have a simlock even though i thought it did, i just tryed a sim card from another operator and it worked flawlessy, 10 min later i had 2.1, lol.

I suspect this sim lock is in reference to the "sim lock" you can set so you have to put in a code to use the phone, not the "sim lock" one might use to refer to for a carrier locked phone.

I could be devestatingly wrong, though.

Apart from battery life, you will be upgrading to v2.1 for so many other reasons as well. Android 2.1 a.k.a. eclair includes following Google offerings :

-- Google Gesture Search
-- Google Voice Search
-- Google Maps with Turn by Turn Navigation
-- Google Global Search for Web + Local Apps, Contacts, SMSs, Browser, Youtube
-- Google Text to Speech Library
-- Google Bluetooth API (enables file transfer over bluetooth)
-- Enhanced browser App
-- Android 2.1 Eyecandy (Screen lock + nice animated screen transitions)

+

-- Enhanced Camera App with essential controls (from Samsung)
-- Enhanced Music App with equalizer (first in Android history, from samsung)
-- Last but not the least, availability of apps those are compatible only with android +1.6 (e.g. Google Goggles, Google Shopper)

I apologise if I still missed something!
For more please google for "Android 2.1 changelog"

And if you still DON'T PLAN to mess with the above, Android 1.5 is for you for sure ... Keep sticking :D

Hope this helps!

Has anyone flashed the phone to the official 2.1 using Odin? I'm sure it's a dumb question but there are so many posts it gets confusing. If someone has done this, is there a good guid to do this?

I see a lot of people flashing using diferent firmwares and stuff, saying "backup first" but not saying how to backup at all. Its like there are bits and pieces of valuable info scattered around but there's no definitive guide.

To make lives easier, "My Backup Pro" is an app to get the task done. Search it at market and install it to take complete backup of your Applications/Data before you flash.
(Search torrents if you don't like the fact its an paid app ;))

Additionally, If you also want to take backup of your original f/w, navigate to http://www.samdroid.net/ and search for the related topic.

all these posts about updating with odin need moving to flashing with odin post as this is for the official release

Why? This thread is about upgrading to 2.1.

If you're just going to wait for the official release, and have no intention of doing anything to your phone until then, I don't understand why you're continuing to post (increasingly petty) additions to this thread.

On topic:

I tried one of the stripped-down alternatives (without Facebook etc) and the difference in free ram (after killing background apps etc) was almost nothing. If anything the stripped version (Useful Mod) used slightly MORE ram because of all the new clutter they couldn't help themselves from adding!!
:D

The menus were certainly fmuch, much faster though.

Still, I'm back with the original 2.1 which (so far) is superb.

I am just going to say that as a total noob in terms of flashing and roms after numerous post on here moaning about samsung I flashed my phone via odin with JCE firmware and have been enjoying 2.1 ever since with zero problems

I understand that this post is about the official upgrade which I am still eagerly waiting for because if when made available in the UK there are any noticible differences then I will simply flash back and upgrade via official channels however it seems to me that there are no differences and that flashing with official firmwares are not different to what everyone on this post are waiting for...
