Root ICS/CM9-JB/CM10 Development Thread

its hard work trying to port a 3.x.x kernel umm maybe of topic a bit bt i have another device droid inc and well we haven't ported(or tried cuz its an old device) a 3.x.x kernel we're still on a 2.6.38.8 kernel and to be honest it runs great :3 i sold mi marquee so i have no input i wish i had some dev experience :/

Noticed nightly builds of jb for the nook color started so I upgraded. Looked at the kernel version and it's 3.0.8. So jealous and so humbled...

I'm going to get an n4 for xmas. I'll sell my two good phones, but I still have a busted marquee to play with. It's the most fun, and the most frustrating device that I have lol.

I'm getting the n4 too. So good to see that you and tdm will be coming along. Absolutely excited about it actually.

I was just doing some research on this phone because I was seriously considering placing an order for one. The specs are great for this phone. There is only one problem......... you cannot change the battery!:eek: WTF??? Not a smart move on the development end IMO. I go through batteries like it's going out of style ....PLUS.... even though the phone gets damn good battery life, there would still come the day when I wish I had that extra battery in my backpack because I am nowhere near an outlet.

That's a wrap on that phone for me and that sux. I've been playing around with the idea of getting one but I just can't see it now. Without the option of battery replacement, I see bad times ahead.

Even without a replaceable battery, it is still most likely the best phone on the market. Both of my tablets, and most tablets don't have replaceable batteries and yet people still by them and love them. And at $299 that's is a steal for a quad core phone no doubt about it. And with googles warranty with the phone if the battery goes bad it can be replaced. The phone also has a pretty decent battery as well so I doubt that you will have the issues with batt life like you do with the marquee. Also the s4 processor is the most low-power efficient processor on the market.

You're right, it is one of the best phones out there as far as specs and warranty. It's got sound backing with Google behind it for sure. I'm just looking at it from my perspective. I'm away from power outlets a lot of the time and I like having the option to pop a fresh battery in while I'm on the go instead of being tied to an outlet while it charges. There's not much worse than needing your phone and it has no charge. I just don't think the phone would be a practical buy for me.

As for a tablet, a non-removable battery wouldn't be a problem for me because I wouldn't be using it like I use my phone. My phone goes with me everywhere.

Another thing to keep in mind is the average life of a Lithium battery. After the 1st year, the battery life will decrease significantly.

I've been reading reviews for an hour and most are pretty darn good. Most gripes are about the battery and the lack of an sd card slot. One thing's for sure, the price isn't bad at all for what you are getting. The phone as a whole is superb and would be the perfect option for many people. I just think that a phone with a replaceable the battery would be a better option for me.

Oh, did you know the phone HAS an LTE chip in it too??

EDIT: LordVincent just brought up a good point too. What do you do if it freezes? A battery pull is what most people do.

Most LG phones have a fall safe for freezes: volume up, and power simultaneously for twenty seconds, automatic reboot. And their are extended battery cases already available for they phone. Listen my honest opinion ; you be a fool not to get the phone.

Devices without a removable battery, and specifically the Nexus devices, should have the power button wired to hard reset when pressing it for 10 seconds. That is a key feature for me as a kernel/rom developer. Otherwise I wouldn't even consider a device with a non-removable battery.

I really like the capacitive keys so that's one reservation I have about the N4. It's got a slightly taller screen to make up for the on-screen buttons. But I still want the buttons.

Then there's the issue of the sdcard. I can certainly live with 13gb in the N4 but I'd prefer a removable card.

I'm definitely done with CDMA in any case. Sprint data speeds suck here and Verizon is way too expensive (though I'm sure it's very nice).

So all things considered, I'm pretty torn between a shiny new N4 at $350 and a LG Nitro for roughly half that. It's a race between Google stocking the second N4 shipment and finding a LG Nitro on ebay for a good price.

But, given that both of those devices have awesome CM support, I expect this stubborn little marquee with the busted screen is still going to be my preferred toy for developing for some time to come. ;)

Right now I'm working out the kinks with my cm10 build. I'm trying to keep as much of the ICS stuff as I can but I don't know how much will coexist. Looks like the screen and camera blobs both require the 3.0.8 kernel drivers. Maybe the audio will be happy, I don't know.

I do have a fresh CM10 booting with adb and sdcard both working, but the screen isn't working yet. It's sooooo nice to be able to push a new rom to /storage/sdcard0 using adb. :D

TDM, what's the possibility do you think you can get JB running on the 2.6.35 Kernel? Just want you to know im with you no matter if you can or not! Really appreciate all of your hard work!(:

Yeah, tell me about it. Sprint speeds are terrible here, and there's no official word that they're bringing LTE into my town anytime soon.

If you're on a postpaid plan with Sprint, you could try force-roaming your phone onto Verizon towers via a PRL swap. I've tried that and the difference can be pretty marked.

Sounds good buddy because I do believe that I'm gonna end up sticking with my Marquee for a little while longer. I'm just gonna buy the Asus Transformer 10" tablet that I posted the link to above. I went and played with it today @ Best Buy and I fell in love. LOL That sucker is NICE!:D

I will also be buying another Prevail from Kmart on Black Friday. It's a helluva phone for $30 and I think I can actually talk my wife into giving up her dumb phone aka the Juno and learning how to use the Prevail. If not, I'll just keep it as a backup. Either way, It'll be nice to have a Prevail back in the family.

Ok, Here it is im running ICS CM9 right about now and let me say I love it, but reading I see that the newest OS out for android is JB CM10 so at this point do you think I sould switch over to JB?? Will it run better than ICS CM9 on my Boost Mobile LG855??

I know they both have sum bugs but I just want your opinion? Whats being worked on more right now CM9/CM10 ?? I ready to give CM10 a go!! I searched the [ROM] section but kinda confused on the one to get? Can someone reply with the thread for CM10 (Good Ver)

Thanks

Okay so I got CM10 built and booted with touch screen, keys, usb, wifi, sound, radio all working.

Cameras are not functional, as expected. Bluetooth is not turning on for some reason, probably a easy fix.

So it looks like we might have something to be thankful for this week. ;)

Glad to hear everything is going well TDM, hopefully we get all functions working sooner or later. doesn't really matter as of right now though! You're amazing!

I decided that since I'm doing a device tree overhaul and looking at bluetooth, I might as well figure out how to get the correct mac addrs.

Figured it out after a bit of detective work. Both BT and WiFi addrs are coughed up by modem commands, which are run by the framework in a stock ROM. I already know how to drive the modem, as I used it to get the baseband during install. So it's a simple matter to write a little program that asks the modem for these values and populates the appropriate configs early in boot. That will solve the issue of two marquees stomping on each other's wifi and bt connections. :)

The mac addr binary is working. There's one minor issue which needs research...

The stock ROM shows my btaddr as 10:69:6f:xx:xx:xx
My binary shows the btaddr as 10:f9:6f:xx:xx:xx

That second octet has a couple extra bits set. I'm not sure what they are for.

Anyway, bluetooth is still eluding me for the moment, so I'll need to continue work on this later. But it's shaping up really well. The audio stuff from ICS seems to work fine. It's just the camera and display stuff from ICS that doesn't work. Those will take major kernel surgery to get working.

Oh, and GPS is still not working. I should look into that also.
