ICS for us! Confirmed

I work for Verizon and can confirm that there is NOT a set date for ICS release. Not even what quarter it will be in. I can tell you though that there is definate information about it coming... just don't know when. Follow me on twitter as I will post the day info is available.

With sense 4.0

I believe HTC has already stated that all current devices will be getting Sense 3.6 due to the hardware in the camera is designed only to work with the new image chip on Sense 4.0 & the One series. Except the One V...

Also, since the baby of the 3 the "V" does not have the camera hardware on par with the "S" and "X",(no image chip) that is what it will run, upon release, sense 3.6.
Sooooo, I am now convinced that this is what version we will get with the ICS update.

*update* I was wrong about that...

Looks like we will get a Droid Incredible 3/4G running ICS before the Dinc2 get the ICS update...

Now it's time to go "play" with google...

I'm excited. Verizon is usually what stands in our way for updates and to hear them announce ICS coming sounds to me like it's on its way sooner than previous updates.
I could be wrong, but I seem to remember them holding back updates that were rolled out by HTC for a long time. I'm just hoping that this announcement means they won't be holding us back.

I like to think of it like waiting for Christmas morning. We know it's coming, we just don't know what day it is today.

Except that we know exactly what day Christmas morning is. ;)

I am not sure which is better, waiting without a confirmed date. Or having that date be way far away (like Q4 2012). I think I'll take the unknown and hope it's soon over the known and really far away.

Ain't that something, ICS is already 5 months old & came out on their hardware/a device they worked closely with google to help develop.
You would think that they would be the first to give the updates to their phones, but then again other manufacturers and carriers might cry foul.
Or maybe the patent wars are holding it up...who knows...

Any idea what (if anything) we'll have to do with rooted phones to get the official ICS update? Will we have to unroot? Will OTA work and will it unroot the phone? I'd like to try the official release before I start messing with moded ROM's.

Currently I'm running TSM GingerBangSense M 5.0 and really like it. Unless ICS really blows my skirt up I'll just stick with what I got. The more I try different ROM's the more hassle it seems to NANDROID backup, backup apps, wide data, flash, reinstall apps, reorganize launcher, etc.

I wonder how big the update will be?
The sense 3.0 update for the Incredible S came in at 228mb file size...
But this is an Android OS update with sense 3.6. (I'm guessing 3.6, might be wrong)
I wonder how big the file size will weigh in at? I also think, what's too big/major for an OTA?
If it's a really a big file, of course VZW will throw in some bloat, I bet a lot of unprepared users will fry their phones taking the update not being fully charged.
I don't know, just a thought. A big OTA update of this kind this seems like major surgery, certainly to be rolled out in stages nationwide not to jam their servers.
I wonder if they'll make it using the internet pass through option.
??? *rambles on*...

Don't they check before starting the install? Or am I confusing them with Apple. I updated my iPad the other day and it forced me to plug in the iPad (I was at 9-10% battery) after the download completed before it would install. I thought android updates did the same thing.

That's good that Apple products force you to do this to prevent damaging your device when updating.

I'm not sure if Android forces you to. I think it shows a message that tells you to be above a certain battery percent threshold to update but doesn't force you to/not let you begin the process if your not.
IDK, I might be wrong on that.
I am left wondering now about other users Android devices not letting them update because of this, like every time they try to update it fails/won't let them because of battery percent not meeting the predefined criteria...interesting.

Do OTA updates go against your data allowance? I have unlimited data but I was wondering for those who do not.

Custom ROMs should disable OTA updates. You will probably have to unroot to get stock ICS.
