Root Idiots Guide To Rooting Kindle Fire HD 7" 7.2.3

@Tirtband

If SuperUser app is installed and "Enable Superuser" is checked then you should have root status and be able to do the following:

On the ES File Explorer Menu, where you found the "Root Settings" you should now be able to select ALL the items in this section:
1) Root Explorer
2) Up To Root
3) Mount File System
4) Back Up System App
5) (un)install apk automatically

If you cannot, then root status has not been granted, which could explain the google play store's behaviour.

If you are definitely rooted, then un-install google playstore and follow the steps again to re-install it.

I would give up on trying to use your Kindle as a removeable device on Windows XP. If you can get ES File Explorer working that should work perfectly:

Make sure you have created at least one share on your Win XP computer. Although not advised, you can right-click on the C drive and share the entire drive if you wish.

On your Kindle, add the share on ES explorer using the WinXP IP Address (remember this can change unless you have given it a fixed IP). If you have a User and Password, add these. If not select anonymous.

Hi inksaver, I followed the guide and still getting mount denied or permission denied (if I try rerooting) I've reset the kindle and started over, it pushes the files and then says mount fail or something permission denied.

Thanks for the cool guide. I was following it up until the point were you need to install ES File Explorer. ry to download the app, I get the message 'country settings not supported'. I bought my Kindle in the US and had it on-shipped on to New Zealand as you can't buy Kindle Fire's from NZ.

Is there a way to download the kindle compatible ES File Explorer to say my PC, and transfer/install it to my Kindle?

If so, could I install a VPN app the same way & fool the Kindle/Amazon App store into thinking I'm in the US?

@Inksaver,

A silly question. Where to find Post #2 that explains the method for preventing automatic over the air update ?

Thanks to Inksaver for the mighty effort writing the idiots guide.

I have run into an undocumented problem trying to implement section 3, step 3.

My Kindle is USB connected to my Windows 7 laptop.
It shows up in 'Devices and Printers' as "....'s Kindle"
ADB is enabled on the Kindle.

But no devices are detected/show in command prompt after I execute the command line "C:\ROOT>stuff\adb devices".

I think USB debugging might not be working. I think I might have the correct Java and SDK installed. How do I check? I've also noticed that Windows Mobile Device Centre doesn't detect the Kindle.

Anyone know what could be the cause? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds like a drivers issue.
Could you check you have something like this in your device manager(Windows 7)

kindlewin7drivers.jpg

One thing you can try is to right-click the Kindle (Portable Devices) in Device Manager and Un-install driver, disconnect kindle, reboot pc, re-install Kindle driver downloaded from Section 1, then re-connect the Kindle.

If you end up with the device manager something like the above, then with luck [HIGH]adb devices[/HIGH] should work.

I had that basic same problem when I was trying to install Root on my KFHD8.9 I fixed it with using the drivers from this page How To: Setup ADB on Windows 7 64bit (Should also work on 32bit)
Let us know if that worked for you!

Hows it going,thanks for the guide. I went through it and successfully rooted it. It is easier than you think or maybe i just got lucky. I was worried about trying it. But i now have a rooted kindle fire hd with google play on it, as well as go launcher ex , hd, live wall paper and droidwall. As you say the world is my lobster or oyster. Whatever it is.

The only slight issue is when i connect it up to my laptop, i have the device manager bang on mtp so it doesn't see the kindle as a portable device anymore. If I uninstall the driver in device manager does it autoinstall the kindle driver and fix this? I am a little bit weary of doing this as this is the only slight issue.

I am able to connect to the samba share on my laptop from the kindle fire tru es explorer. I can copy files accross tothe fire hd that way. Im well happy and in the process of turning off OTA. Thanks again

Once you are rooted, you can un-install all the drivers/SDK/ADB and start again with re-installing Kindle drivers from Amazon's website, so you can see it as a device once more. I am lucky that mine is still useable as an external device, but I tend to use either Samba shares, or email via Googlemail from laptop to Kindle. The largest file sent via email so far is 15MB. (Not sure if there is a limit)
The advantage of email is if you email yourself an .apk app file you can install it directly from Gmail app.

Still trying to get past the command prompt stage because my Kindle still isn't being recognised. I decided to restore the defaults on my Kindle and start from scratch on a new PC. Anyway. Have reached install ES File Explorer stage and can't install because I'm outside US and Amazon won't let me download from app store. Previoulsy, online, by chance I found a website with a 3rd party app I downloaded. Once installed on Kindle, I opened the app, entered the name of any app I was searching for and it would take me to the 3rd party app store providing it. I found ES file explorer and heaps of other favourite apps. I JUST CAN'T FOR THE LIFE OF ME REMEMBER WHAT THE NAME OF THE WEBSITE OR THE APP WAS. Anyone know???

Cheers for the reply. I think i am going to leave it as i have it now with the composite adb drivers. i copied an avi of 750 mb on to it last night with samba share. i can easily copy accross apk files that way or as you were saying i can email apks. So i am going to leave it as it is now incase i need to root it again. Thanks for the help.

A question about the market i have installed from this guide. Is this the latest version of it or are there later ones? any benefits of putting the latest vers of market on?

Hi all. Firstly, thank you so much Inksaver. Finally rooted my KFHD, google play now works & have firewalled, preventing kindle updates. Had USB/driver issues with my HP Pavilion dm1 (Win 64) notebook. Cmd prompt program wasn't detecting KFHD. Tried everything, gave up & sucessfully rooted using Win 64 desktop. Funny thing was didn't have to install Android SDK kit.
Have a suggestion for those stuck at trying to log into google play account. I tried a dozen times & kept getting the "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server. _______________________
This could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues, call customer care." Funny thing is I have a non-3g KFHD, so I have no data plan, only wifi. Out of sheer desperation I disabled location services and logged straight-in to my google play account account via wifi networking! I suggest people with non & 3g KFHD's try this. I guess 3g KFHD's should have 3g disabled as well as location services too.

First off, thank you for an amazing how-to guide on rooting the kindle! Excellent job. So here's my problem, everything completed with no difficulties, but when it reboots, it is so slow that no images will load on carousel. I've tried the other methods of running the RunMe again and going through the normal re-rooting process, but after several failed attempts, my kindle is still extremely slow. I don't want to have to unroot, but I know no other way around this. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you so much!

EDIT- So I tried to unroot, but it cannot find su file? So I guess I'm not rooted. After I press 1 to do normal root in command prompt, here is what I get:
Device type:
1) Normal
2) Special (for example: Sony Tablet S, Medion Lifetab)

x) Unroot

Inksaver - I PM'd PRallday168 the other day, and he is out of pocket, no PC for providing detailed assistance. But he did refer me to your xlnt work at this site. One quick question before I move forward - I have tried rooting my KFHD a few times, to no avail. From a quick perusal of your instructions, and the blog, I am seeing a few red flags. Do I need to re-activate java? (Homeland's recent alert). I will reset the KFHD back to factory - is there any "cleaning" of the PC, to clear the decks, before trying again? W7 Home Premium, and 7.3.2.
Thanx -

Excellent directions. VERY thorough. I was able to root my Kindle Fire and install Google Play to install some apps I was wanting.

Inksaver, wow. Well done. This was extremely helpful.

Now that I have this thing rooted, I have two questions. First, the Google packages that we installed included Chrome Beta. This looks like its only version 16. The current android beta channel is on version 25. Is there any way to update this?

Second, for incompatible apps, I tried Bluestacks but it looks like the default phone on their is just as incompatible. Is there a way to update that?

Thanks again for the guide, very very cool of you to put that together.

@KindleKing

The rooting is a two stage process. After stage 1 it will be slow and not very responsive. This is normal. Just give it time and allow the second stage to proceed.

@marthal222

I am not aware of any preparation needed, except to make sure the drivers are installed correctly and your Kindle can be detected using adb.exe in a command prompt

@jwalhol

You can install any version of the apps you want. It is just a matter of finding them. An example is APKTOP

Chrome Beta 25 from http://www.papktop.com/tag/chrome-beta-apk

This also applies to incompatible apps. If you can find the .apk then copy it across to your Kindle and install. The only problem may be with paid apps, where you need to get them from a legitimate source so they will work on your Kindle using the same account. If Bluestacks will not run it, then you need to have it working on another real Android device you own first, then copy it across.

hello,
first can i say great detailed guide and easy to follow once you start to read it and understand the layout
but........
im having the same problem as some other users with the device not showing when in cmd I type "stuff\adb devices" there is nothing showing for listed devices.

im using a laptop running windows 7 64 bit

i have installed the drivers you have stated in your tut and put the files in the same places as you have said in the tut

i installed the drivers then connected my KFHD and it shows in computer as a drive and in device manager

(im knew at this so please try and simplify it lol)
thank you

edit,
i noticed you asked for locations just incase it had an effect on different kindles, im in the UK

It may be necessary to go down the full SDK install route. Puzzled why your device is not seen. I assume there are no spaces, empty lines etc in front of the 0x1949 text?

no there are no spaces or anything and it's on the very top line

I have once again reinstalled my kfhd to factory and I have uninstalled the drivers so I'll try your guide once again

do you know of a "noob" friendly full SDK install tut?
