I'm sorry everyone :(

I guess I'm in a minority, but to be honest the pentile matrix screen kills the Bionic for me. I would easily wait a month for a device like it with a regular LCD screen (a screen as good as Droid1 for pete's sake) much less an AMOLED screen. That and a locked bootloader make me want to smack Moto upside the head.

That is a really good point. Do you think Samsung will spend any money out of it's own pocket for advertising? I would think with all the rave reviews of the device the phone would sell itself. Engadget gave it a 9/10. I could see the marketing now it writes itself.

"The #1 Android smartphone of 2011. Now on Verizon (or Now in America!) get yours today!"

I think that combined with the much more sleek design would pull in just about every casual android user. That and the screen. And I think the unlocked bootloader would pull in the hardcore android fans. Honestly I see no reason to get the Bionic if the SGS2 comes out on the same day. I stand firm that the Stratosphere is going to be a mid to high range slider, and not direct competition for the Bionic.

I hope it is a high range slider I love having a keyboard at times and typing long messages on touchscreen is a pain. I have the TB and have an upgrade I would use if the Stratosphere has good specs since the screens are nice and the keyboard and unlocked bootloader is a plus.

Okay that was just mean. :(

:D If there is one thing I've learned from this drawn out Bionic fiasco. Just cause a rumor says a phone is coming out doesn't mean it will. I don't wanna wait till Oct only to find the Vigor delayed until December. It's an endless cycle. I'm just going to get whatever the next major phone to drop is. Am I impatient? Yes totally. But if you wait to never be burned by new technology you will never have a new phone. Ever.

Edit: I would like to point out that we have turned this thread into a full fledged discussion thread. It's great discussion though :)

It helps to make lists of what's important to you in a new phone. Here's mine...

Required:

  • Verizon 4G/LTE
  • Dual-core
  • 1GB+ RAM
  • Non-Pentile display, except maybe 1280x720 Pentile
Preferred:

  • SAMOLED+ at or above qHD 960x540
  • LED notification light (dammit Samsung!)
  • 1.2GHz+ on new'ish chipset
  • Rootable
So Bionic won't quite do it for me, but Stratosphere will be enough and Prime would be ideal.

What if stratosphere doesn't have dual core? Also doesn't the epic have a led? Since if it does end up being the slider nobody knows if it will be dual core but doesn't seem that way. Personally I'm more interested in lte since dual cores will probably drain the battery even faster.

Single-core would be deal-breaker for me. Not because I need it now, but 2yrs is a looooong commitment.

Hmmmmm you're right, Epic does have one. Charge and existing SGS2 don't so I assumed all Samsung didn't. I know about NoLED and it sounds like the best available solution on SGS2, but I'd rather have the real thing.

I usually never keep a phone for two years so dual core isn't a real deal breaker for me since most of google and apps aren't built to utilize them yet but iyou stick with a phone the whole length of a contract then I see your point.

I made the unrecoverable mistake of deleting the wrong forum after combing this with the Function. Fortunately I think it was only six threads but still.. I'm sorry! I don't make mistakes like this often but I'm only human so they can happen.

Sorry again :(

Unacceptable! :p

Don't worry, it happens to everyone... ;)

I think this may be a big part of the reason for the SGS2's delay. It's so good the other brands are afraid to compete with it. I was wondering if perhaps Apple struck some kind of deal with Samsung that prohibited it from being released stateside until AFTER the iPhone5. After all, the big A was pursuing legal action against Sammy for supposed infringement. Whatever the case I am still pretty sure I'll go with the SGS2, but I'm getting pretty damn impatient.

Off topic: mikepic, you look exactly like the Verizon rep I was chatting with in Tallahassee about the SGS2 a couple days ago. I almost fell out of my chair doing a double take. Then I saw your location. Crazy though.

I still don't understand why the function forum was removed the stratosphere is most likely something else and the function was set to be verizons sgs2 variant. It just doesnt make sense to eliminate it when nobody has any idea if this will even be the function.

I don't think he meant to delete the Function forum. I think he meant to combine the stratosphere threads in the function forum into this one, and accidentally deleted the function. I could be wrong though.

Well, that is kind of what happened.

He created a new Stratosphere forum and put all of the threads from the Stratosphere and Function forums into that new forum. That left the old Stratosphere and Function forums to delete. So, three forums, one a Function forum (empty) one a Stratosphere forum (empty) and one a Stratosphere forum (full of all posts). He deleted the Stratosphere forum full of all the posts rather than the empty one. ALL threads from both forums were lost.

I'm sure that if you think there is a good reason to have a Function forum still it could be created...but I wouldn't want to go there. ;)

(Yes, I have administered forums myself; what happened is very easy to do.)

I understand what happened, and yes, it seems like something I would do myself by accident ;).

But, and this is just out of curiosity, I don't mean to beat a dead horse or to come off as combative, but aren't there backups on a site like this? I mean, when it depends so heavily on recorded conversations, I would think it would be backed up like crazy. Especially for a site as extensive and well known as this one.

The problem with backups is that with a site that operates like this one, with an average of thousands of users online at any given moment, with tens of thousands of posts being made, losing a single (or two, or even three) forum(s) to error versus losing thousands of posts in hundreds of forums due to backup recovery means taking the lesser of two evils - and that would be accepting the loss of a single (well, two, really) forums and moving on.

A backup would only have worked if 1) it was continuous and 2) it was restored immediately upon discovery of the error, minimizing the loss of posts in non-affected forums. And continuous backups are expensive. If the backups were not continuous, meaning there are time increments when the backups are performed, then every post made after said backup would be lost in the interim backup reload.

If this had been an active forum with help, info, troubleshooting, etc., as opposed to a forum created for a device that is not in anyone's hands yet, it might have been different.

And I, too, have managed and moderated numerous forums in the past. I'm sure that Phases is extremely thankful that this happened with these forums as opposed to something insanely large, like, for instance, the Motorola DROID forums....

Nope, not buying any of that. A site as big as this large collection of humongous forums will have nightly incrementals and weekly full backups, or something similar. It'll all happen automatically w/o human intervention. And a site this huge using off-the-shelf forum software will have well-established mechanisms for recovering from admin or hardware failure. It would've been a trivial procedure to recover the forum, losing at most maybe a day's worth of posts.

This screwup isn't a big deal -- I've done worse ones myself -- but let's not paint it as unrecoverable when it wasn't.

I never said it was unrecoverable - I said it was easier to confine the damage to these two forums rather than spread it out system wide.

Yeah but that's a false dichotomy. Using that argument you'd never fix anything due to risk of breaking something.

There should be a means of "Restore forum X to the state as of the last backup"

Do you honestly beleive that if said feature existed it was purposefully not used?

Wow.

Well, I just looked through the vBulletin documentation and support forums and you were right -- there is no easy way to recover a deleted vBulletin forum. Yikes.

I'm sure an experienced admin could crunch the necessary SQL to merge the right data from a backup's tables, but that's not something most people could do, and it would definitely be a high risk operation.

Sorry for making claims without checking them!

Those docs, incidentally, are waaaaaaaay to lengthy.... lol.

No worries, it's just that I knew if there was a way it would have been done.

As for the SQL code to merge the data partially from a backup - hmmm, hell, that would make or a good (and profitable!) vBulletin add-on....

/me runs to find some expert SQL coders

So getting back to another question:
Which phone is what? So far I count these new Sammies:
Galaxy S2 Function
Galaxy S2+ Celox
Stratosphere
Are any of these the same model?
