IMPORTANT: HUGE update to AndroidForums.com

Hey all :)

Wanted to give this thread a little time to develop before making my way in for the duration of this migration, and let Rob field the first few questions.

First, let me address just a few things I've seen:

- Yep! The G1 is the first Android device, from a long while back. Nostalgia!

- Yep, all (phone and tablet) devices are now in a single node, /android-devices/ and you filter the content to whatever device you want to see, by clicking a device link on the home page, or "see all" which takes you to /devices/list/.

- Yes, we have an enormous theme change coming pretty soon. Like Rob said, we'd like to do it in 2 weeks or less. It may be a week or so late, lets be honest, but look - we've been working on these changes as he said, for a full year - it's a ton of back and front end customization, so 3 weeks from now is pretty awesome from our perspective. We do understand that this recent change coming so early beyond that change being ready was maybe in retrospect not the best choice but, it's okay. We learn by doing.

- The new app. it was originally intended to not be a tapatalk full replacement, but new theme's mobile version combined along with it was. However we are going to be introducing new features to the app, very soon, also in the 2-3 week range, to that which will sort of be a blend, as we compromise the original intent to meet usability deficiencies. In fact, a pretty decent new update is hitting in the next day or so. Won't introduce all the new features I'm implying but will help with.. well, a few things. You'll see.

- Missing functions, mark read, searching, thread tools, these will be resolved either with the new theme coming or shortly there-after as the next step.

There are a lot of knowns that we need to work with and how to solve them, there are also a lot of unknowns as the way we are doing this, as far as I can tell, is pretty unique and it is a ton of custom work so, we're able to predict some things as we go but others we discover or we find people care more or less than we thought so - please bear with us

I realize this is a bit of a shock and more warning on our part would have been appreciated. For that I apologize. It's just kind of difficult to really explain until you see it in action how it's really truly going to be taken.

Anyway, let's keep track of all feedback, and try to prioritize. Let's keep it all on this thread, if you see comments out there on other threads encourage users to come post here. I promise you at the end of this, our vision will be a little more apparent and appreciated.

:)

The old structure was a gigantic mess and it had to be addressed.

The difficulty is that in the absence of any statement of future capability we are pretty much in the dark as how to help. We are forced to "wait and see".

Pinning

All pins in device forums were deleted.
I can mow pin a thread and when the device area is listed it is at the top (like in the past). When the combined Devices forum is listed it is at the top.
Should I be re-pinning important threads to have a device area like the past?
Are the new pins going to remain or am I wasting my time?
Will pinning threads now get in the way of the conversion? I can image a few thousand pinned threads at the beginning of the devices forum.

Favorites and Watching

There is no way to mark a device area as a favorite so I can watch it. Will there be in the future?
I had no watched threads in the past only watched forums. Were the favorites threads lost along with the favorite forums?
I used to watch a lot of device forums in the past and hope to be able to watch those device areas in the future?

Apps & Games Forum

I personally dislike the combination of Apps and Games.
Are they going to remain combined?
If they are going to remain combines will there be an Apps area and a separate Games area?

@Thom

- Pins were removed. They can be added back ONE per forum. A master sticky that links to all the important content. Take your time please, most important devices first. We are going to need to make is so that they do not show in the forum unless it is being filtered onto a device, though. Otherwise we will end up with 2500+ stickies on the first page. It happened during the conversion and was part of the reason we unpinned, but there were other reasons.

- Your favorites/watched are still in-tact (what you had set) in our database. We are going to fix/re-introduce this feature and I see no reason (though I'm not the only one with feedback in this regard) why would could not import everyones favorites into the new solution. Hang tight on this one.

- Archived are in the same area as all the rest. We removed many devices that were really old with no or very very few posts. The posts exist int he same area, but the filter for the device is gone. Like phones, were very similar and have very similar identifiers when they report in (when people log into the App on those phones) were combined.

That said, I see both devices you mention, here:

http://androidforums.com/devices/list

- Apps and Games are combined into one, yes. We may try to separate them later but this is a pretty difficult task.

I found that right after I posted the message and edited it out. The new index is better than the way it used to be.

Only Phones and Tablets are in the new area, at the moment. It will make more sense with the new theme when it comes.

The link in the Tablet section should be changed to point to the new combined index.
The label in the Phone and Tablet sections should be changed to (See All Phones and Tablets)

I installed the new forums app (I have the LG Volt) and all I saw were posts in LG Volt from around 2 years ago. It was very buggy, force closed, and most threads and posts wouldn't show up. Uninstalled

It would be more helpful if you could work with @stevealbright to get these issues resolved. LG Volt huh? He may have some logs or information to ask for if you don't mind. We need the public's help to get all this resolved. We only have so many of the 2k phones out there in staff's hands :)

What is the purpose of the "My Device" forum:
http://androidforums.com/devices/my-device.1179/

Threads follow the new "Thread Title - Device Name" format but say My Device instead of which phone they have. Is it a default area where posts go if the app doesn't detect their phone?

@kate - My Device is a generic "catch all" channel for any devices that we have not yet approved. Unfortionatally, there is no 100% perfect way to be able to auto approve everything and be accurate. We do have a massive lookup table so lots of devices will be auto approved. It gets messy but our system will work and will be better over time. Some manufacturers have multiple models for the same device and even some have the same model name for different devices! (believe it or not lol).

What device are you currently using that you see "My Device". I will verify the status of that channel and makes sure it is not a bug of some sort. Thanks!

When viewing the LG Volt forum from the Forums app, you should see the threads here: http://androidforums.com/devices/lg-volt.2766/

I am not sure how you are seeing 2-year-old threads since it should receive threads and posts sorted by most recent. I have a few FC's reported, please allow us to get those all fixed but please feel free to elaborate on how and when it FC's in case it is something that I am not currently aware of.

When you say most threads and posts wouldn't show up... do you mean that you can not see the same threads that you see on the website? If so, we are aware of this limitation and we will soon fill this disconnected between app and site. If you mean something else, let me know... Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in responses... the app does not show me these notifications! Don't worry, I rated the app 1 star and am holding it hostage until the developer gets his !@%# together :batdroid:

The app doesn't recognize my Note 4.

There's no way to check into my AF account, just my Google accoun, which is something totally different.

I will look into your Note 4.

With the Google login, this is the current flow:
  • Click the Login with Google button and select Gmail account
  • If your Gmail is already linked to your AF account (meaning you logged in via Gmail on the website before), it will auto verify and log you in.
  • If your Gmail does not match any account on AF, it will show you a dialog and ask if you currently have an AF account.
    • If you hit yet, it will ask for credentials, assuming it authenticated properly, it would link your account.
    • If you hit no, it will create a new account using your Gmail.
There is room for improvement for sure and this is one action item on our list. Our initial account login flow was first developed for apps like EarlyBird that was more targeting a simple as possible flow for new accounts. The main delay with just adding a way to log in with AF username and password is security. Gmail provides a very nice way to pass tokens back and forth which provides great security for the user.

If you think you created a new account with your Gmail that is not currently linked... @Phases or myself can get those merged for you.

For everyone that refuses to log in with Gmail, well... soon we will have a solution but this is something that we will not just rush because we want it secure and take security/privacy very seriously.
