Root Impossible Rom Manager is impossible :-/

Hey all!

So I decided to root my LG Optimus V a few days ago and to be honest, it hasn't been all that great. The culprit? Rom Mgr (v 4.3.0.1). I followed a n00b guide on ihackmyidotcom (post title: how to root and flash lg optimus v - I can't post links just yet) but still haven't been able to download Gapps via Rom Mgr; every time I go to "download ROM" I get the following message:

You must upgrade your Rom Manager to the latest version!

I click OK and then get this force close message:

Sorry! The application Rom Manager (process com.koushikdutta.rommanager) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

When I go back into RM and click "Check for ROM updates" I get the following:

This feature is only available to Premium users!

SO:
1-what did I do wrong? (And you'll likely say "well, you installed RM" to which I will fully agree and ask how to uninstall it if that's an option)

2-Is there a way to fix this d/l ROMs issue or do I absolutely have to d/l roms to my SD (ick)? <--How?

3-Is there a RM alternative that won't have me pulling my hair out? If so, how do I go about using it?

Thanks in advance!

Here's an updated guide on what you can and cannot do with Rom Manager.

http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/419080-truth-about-rom-manager.html

IMHO though, it's best to just not use Rom Manager at all. I've seen more people screw up their phone simply because they did something with it they shouldn't of. Most of those screw ups could of been prevented with a bit more research instead of following the first guide they came across. ;)

When people first learn about root and decided they want to root, they don't know that rooting is device specific. Also a lot of people don't know what drivers are, and what they do. So they think that any software/firmware/mod/etc will automatically work with their device.

The rooting thing you're right, when I was noob to android I thought it wasn't device specific, but I'm sure more people know they need drivers than a specific way to root, IMO.

@badboytoast: I took some time to read that guide (thnx, btw!) and decided to flash Cold As Ice using this guide: http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/538835-rom-cold-ice-optimus-v-updated-a11.html. I booted into recovery, cleared the data, cache and Dalvik cache and installed gapps from the sd card. THEN I tried to install Alpha 11D and I got the following error:

E: Error in /sdcard/alpha11D-CM9...(Status 7)...Installation aborted.

Any idea as to what the problem could be?

@Petrah & Phatninja55: 1)how would I go about uninstalling RM? 2) Is there another program out there that can replace it and still maintains its user-friendliness?

Thanks! ;)

ive said this a few times before... why dont we get our butts in there and get rom manager supported RIGHT? new people will use it wouldnt it be less of a hassle to just get it going righT?

You also need to format boot, system and data under the advanced settings when flashing a new ROM. If I were you, I abandon ROM Manager and do all your flashing from your recovery. That way you can be sure of what you are doing, and the proper partitions get wiped.

@cammy, it's been tried many times. Koush doesn't seem to monitor what is uploaded very well. The V roms he had on there are not from the devs, and the recovery doesn't work for our phones.

If you don't want to use any of ROM Manager's functions (The only one I use is "Manage Backups" to rename and delete with ease any backup I've made), then QtADB would be the best choice. You have to have A ClockworkMod recovery or any of it's modified versions installed, and have ADB established in your PC's system path. This I think is better in a lot of ways than ROM Manager. You can find it in the All Things Root Guide sticky under the Utilities section.

@riggerman:
My advanced menu includes the following: reboot recovery, wipe dalvik cache, wipe battery stats, report error, key test, show log, partition sd card, fix permissions. Which one of those would have me "format boot, system and data?"

And yes, that's precisely how I flashed gapps (from recovery mode). Btw, I've been trying to use the Google Play Store and it keeps giving me a "server error;" I hit the "try again" button and it gives me the same error (and I tried using both 3G and WiFi). I looked around in the forums and one person suggested that I just need to give Google a day or two on their end before it'll work. Thoughts?

@AndyOpie150: thanks! :) It's not that I don't want to use any of RM's functions (I mean if they worked, then all would be gravy). What mainly got me going on this whole topic was the fact that I couldn't download ROMs from RM - isn't RM supposed to make it easier for n00bs like myself? Then that got me wondering if a majority of people end up flashing their roms via a program like RM (with a dedicated "download rom" feature) or if they just end up flashing from the sd card (or the more elusive QR code). I'm starting to think the latter is the preferred method, but you tell me.

Sorry you missed understood/I miss communicated. ROM Manager is not very easy for those that are new to all this modding. It really is only for those that have a lot of experience with modding (this is a common mistake).

If you purchased the Premium license then it will do more. But it is not worth the $5.00 for the little bit extra that it will allow an Optimus V user to do.
The only ROM's you can safely flash with ROM Manager without the premium license are the Froyo ROM's as they don't usually require the level of wiping and formatting that the Gingerbread and ICS ROM's require for a clean install (any residual data left behind might corrupt those ROM's).

If you look in the "mount's and storage" section you will find the format options you are looking for (formatting wipes data).
Back up all data in the SD card to your PC before going here. If you accidentally format your SD card you will lose everything in it (even experienced modders have made this mistake).

As far as the Google play store problem try this: Go to settings/applications/manage applications: select the all tab. Find the PlayStore app and clear all data and cache. Then go back to your recovery and wipe the dalvick cache and the cache partition.

@AndyOpie150: thanks for the info.

Also, I tried clearing the data and cache and Google Play still gives me server error. Does it matter that the cache was already cleared before I tried your steps?

What I did was learn how to use clockwork mod then deleted rom manager for good, I use can for all things flashing

If that didn't work try this: From a terminal emulator (download from the PlayStore) type this in:

su
cd /cache
mv download download.old
mkdir -p /sdcard/cache/download
ln -s /sdcard/cache/download download

Note: ln -s.... The l is a small case L
Hit the enter key after each line.
This is case sensitive: make sure everything is spelled right and the spaces are where they need to be (Reading glasses help to see the small letters on the screen better).
When you first type in su, Superuser will ask for permission, select to allow. Then go to the menu and select "toggle soft keyboard" and finish the rest of the code. Then back out of app. Reboot.

This will move the cache from the system to the sd card

If this doesn't work you really have a server problem or you need to flash a ROM.

If you get error's on installation of ROM try downloading an MD5 sum checker to your PC. Download the ROM.zip to the PC. Run the MD5 sum checker to check the sum of the download. If it matches the one at the developers thread then install it to the sd card. If it requires the Gapps put the gapps.zip there as well. The root of the sd card is the easiest place for install purposes (not in any folder just near the bottom of the list of folders).

If you still get an error try selecting "toggle signature verification" in the "install zip from sd card" option in the recovery. At the bottom of the screen it will say "signature verification enabled". Select it one more time. Now it should say "signature verification disabled" (this is what you need). Continue with the Install of the ROM and Gapps.

If you still are having problems you will need to install a different recovery. The BobZohme modified CWMod recovery (VM670NH_recovery.img) is the best for your phone and screen. It can be found in the All Things Root Guide sticky^.

If you need help with that: Were right here.

Gahhh!!

OK, so sucky news: I lost my LGOV on Friday. Been on a mad witch hunt for it since then, but nothing has come up. Not a problem though; I've got a magical bag o' phones left over from previous VM upgrades. I shall be returning to the Samsung Intercept for a while and yes, most definitely rooting that. Perhaps I'll see you all in the Intercept forums? ;)

Thanks a ton to you all for your help!

:D
