iPhone vs Desire comparisons... always the same!

I commented on the iphones lack of flash enabled browsers to a idude, he responded with "what is flash ?" ..... I turned left, and walked out of the room :D

One other thing, my friend bought a 3GS the other day. I asked why and she said "because its the best", I asked her why and she said because "It can do things yours cant" I asked "whats that?" Cant remember what she answered but it was something like "because it can go on the internet"... I mean common, its just that people really don't have a clue tbh, I know many people that don't use smart phones like smart phones!
Your friend is just like the character in that comparison video. It's so true it never fails to make me laugh no matter how many times I watch it. It's a wonder she didn't say "because it has the wiiifiii's" :D

I know someone like that as well :p

After 3 years as an iOS user, and now Android 2.2, I really don't even see the two being in the same ballpark. I would dare to compare it to IBM OS/2 anno 1995, vs. Windows 7 anno 2010 from a user experience point of view. Hardware is another story, thats a no brainer to compare. Looks is too subjective. However, build quality on IP4 seems like shit, they shatter after a few drops.

You'd be surprised how many reviewers are on Apple's payroll ;)

That is the problem "stuff" has an exact same comparision and the iphone seems to win although 3 different phones got 5 out of 5. One of the +'s for it was it has a 3.5mm jack.

I dont see any comments about the price of the iphone though which is a major negative. Plus who cares about most of their games, they are pish. Desire put an emulator on it and you are away.

Then as said above the people that buy iphones dont even kno what to do with them apart from buying craps apps that are useless. As for the ipad,

Most publications are written on Apple PCs as they pretty much pwn the market in that area. Hence the journos who are writing the reviews tend to be died in the wool fanbois.
Just laugh at their inherent bias, and move on!

If your not tech minded enough to figure out the desire then you would be lost on iphone too.

My point, to use an iphone you have to have a PC for itunes setup. If your PC literate then using android would be simple.

Android is not for tech savey people, it is very user friendly although is even better if you are tech minded.

The debate won't last much longer as android will develop faster than irubbish from this point on.

Its started with the desire already and next gen phones will increase the divide.

I actually own both an iPhone 4 32GB and an HTC Desire. I got the iPhone for free from my provider, and I paid full price for the HTC Desire. The iPhone was only superior in two areas: Variety of games and apps, and storage space. The Desire has ridiculously low internal memory.

I'm currently looking to sell my iPhone, so it should be pretty clear which I prefer :)

Status has a lot to do with the iPhone success, generally Apple products are expensive and that carries an image; think of luxury cars - Lexus, BMW, Mercedes; they're just cars but they have an image that infers something about the status and wealth of the owner....
Mercedes has implemented ABS 10 years before than others. Cars is another story. They say that if you want to see how a casual car would be in 5-10 years then you should have a look at the Mercedes. i mean the technologies. (I don't own one:-) )

Apple loses out no matter what people say because of their "closed format" approach. iTunes is almost forced on you, the interface is poor with little chances of customizing, heavily moderated app store and no ability to install apps outside of the app store. Costs over twice what the desire costs here, as well, and they won't support Flash because, *gasp* you might play Flash games instead of buying crappy apps that do the same things!

Sorry but the Desire is just superior for any user who does more than make occasional calls and likes to boast.

Very nicely put.

Once again, cue the plethora of ill-considered onslaughts based on nothing but over exaggerated stereotypes and misplaced rage towards said fruit-based logo toting devices and their users.

When is it going to dawn on you guys that by making such unfounded comparisons you are simply the equivalent of these 'iFans' you so avidly despise? The iPhone is an excellent device suitable for the vast majority of the population, it is just simply not aimed at people like us. Is that so hard to understand?

Closed systems have POSITIVES as well as the negatives you speak of. For people like us, the negatives outweigh those positives, but for everyone else there are no negatives. My Dad doesn't even know how to change his desktop wallpaper! What does he care about customisation! Try looking at it from the perspective of other people for once instead of through your own closed minded eyes.

Y'know, considering the general consensus seems to be that Desire users are infinitely smarter than iPhone users, sometimes the comments on threads like these really don't give that idea any credibility.

I have a Desire. My friend has the iPhone4.

The iPhone4 is much better.

Please, no disrespect intended, but are you serious? I've tried both handsets extensively and the Desire is just a better unit overall.

Just curious, why is it that you don't have the iPhone?

Not JUST iPhone users, but all phone owners that aren't using a Desire ;)

That's sarcasm for those not versed in it

As much as we dont like to hear this its pretty much spot on. Everyone is different and has different needs, does not mean that if you like fruit based phones you have spacial needs.

The woman I work with has an iPhone and its only me sitting there taking the pi55 out of what it cannot do that makes her think its not very good. For her needs though it works and goes well with her Gucci shades and handbag.

Each to their own...

Exactly.

I think the joke in that cartoon about the Evo printing money is pretty funny because it's so hypocritical. It seems too many people here are so quick to write off Apple products as s**t and a waste of money no matter what they're actually capable of. It cuts both ways, each side has it's devote fans who are blindly ranting on about why their respective devices are 'better' than each others with no real thought behind it. And again, from some of the posts on here you'd be forgiven for thinking the idea was that we've chosen android because of our intellectual superiority over the 'average' user.

Genuine ignorance is... profitable because it is likely to be accompanied by humility, curiosity, and open mindedness; whereas ability to repeat catch-phrases, cant terms, familiar propositions, gives the conceit of learning and coats the mind with varnish waterproof to new ideas. -John Dewey

I picked the logical choice. Wasnt anythink other than new android based phones are better than apples. If the iphone was indeed a better phone for me, i would own one. Lost of things about android phones annoy me, but more so with apple iphones........ Blind love over a product really does annoy me, so dont get me started :D

Quite agree w.r.t people being anti-apple in the same way fanbois are pro-apple. Just judge the product and get what works for you.

BUT.

Getting back to the OP's point a great deal of the gadget media is very pro-apple for no discernible reason (although, as some have pointed out journo-types do tend to use Macs so they're possibly biased by that).

Last month T3 had a "App Smart Phone" shoot-out which was won by the iPhone 4. Now, the Android phone they used was some bizarre Motorola release and even their review said the Desire beat it into a pulp - so why use it ? To give them a bit of due they even mentioned the Desire in the iPhone 4 bit, in a favourable light - suggesting that the Desire may even be a better phone (but not quite going as far as to say it was actually best).

I suspect the reason they didn't use the Desire in the test is that it had been in a previous issue's group-test (it was judged to be WAY better than an iPhone 3GS) and didn't want to sound like stuck-record BUT I can guarantee the iPhone 4 will get another slot (there aren't any alternatives that run iOS). So why use an inferior Android phone in a test of something that the Desire does really well ? Looked to me like they didn't want the first showing of the iPhone 4 to be beaten by an existing device.

When the media do compare the phones they tend to say iPhone does everything and is expensive, Desire also does everything and is cheaper but the iPhone is best. They usually gush about how pretty the iPhone is at this point. I agree it is pretty but does that REALLY matter for a device that spends most of its time out-of-sight (or at least should, I sat opposite a **** on the tube the other day who spent the entire time waving his iPhone 4 around like we should all care he has one - why is there never a mugger when you need one?)

If you watch press conferences of Steve Jobs, he always has to have a go at Android and Blackberry. He's doing the "look, the other guys has their problems too" rather than "we'll look into it and figure out a solution to the problem". Apple as a company is OK, but for years they've been trying to dictate the techology industry much like Microsoft has been, the iPhones and even iPod Touch has practically no learning curve while the Android has a fairly steep learning curve, that's part of why reviewers go with the iPhone- they don't want to spend time surfing around the OS figuring things out... but I do. :)

Samsung and HTC has been putting out some incredible devices that easily surpasses the iPhone while Motorola has been terrible and I'm surprised they're putting that god awful Motoblur onto the Milestone 2 (non-US version of Droid 2).

LOL this makes me think of Paris Hilton, except she uses a Blackberry Torch.

nice sentiment and i understand where you're coming from but both points are totally invalid for your average phone user who sees the iPhone as a decent bit of kit with a good reputation (antennae aside).

Again, this happens on both sides of the fence. Listen to the way Vic Gundotra bashes Apple at every possible turn in his keynote at I/O 2010. I/O 2010 keynote.

Yeah I totally agree that tech writers are being way too closed minded when it comes to reviewing the devices, but what did you expect? Journalism is full of that sort of thing.

(Oh and by the way, I think it's so awesome that they gave all 5000 visitors to that event a free HTC Evo! I'm definitely trying to get my name on the list for next year!)
