iPhone vs Desire comparisons... always the same!

If the iphone was cheaper i would go for it handsdown.

The apps are better like bbc i player and games, plus if you use itunes its very handy.

The Desire is great but i was playing around with my friends iphone at work and tbh i found it to be the better phone for entertainment.

Oh no? Which would you have picked then? Bearing in mind that I'm a student and so can't afford anything astronomically expensive.

So because you can't afford anything better that makes it the best on the market?

Got some news for you buddy.

is it any wonder the iphone is such a giant in the world of smart phones? Very annoying!

I am glad that most smartphone users are iphoners cause I like to be a bit different. I wish fewer people had the desire to be honest. I see them on the bus and cringe. " Its mine, not yours" I think to myself.

Unfortunately its a double edged sword because it gives apple the power (or belief) to sue all the other smart phone manufacturers.

Although that said, they all sue each other anyway.

I won't even let anyone who has that on their laptop connect it to my home network, let alone use it myself ;)

Seconded.......IF only they knew

Ah well, at least I wont have my usage details secretly herded to Cupertino each time I go on t'internet......Also, IF/WHEN I buy a CD and rip it I dont have to worry about any of those tracks having my details (including credit card) stored within the track data......

Wonder how many cloned identities there are out there due to this procedure

Techradar have the Desire as the best phone out just now.

No they don't.

"Is it better than the HTC Desire? In some ways yes, in some ways no... the iPhone 4 hits higher points but thanks to the reception issue hits lower points too.
Essentially it comes down to a straight choice: are you interested in the geek chicness of the rapidly-improving Android, or are you all over the slick iPhone eco-system?"

But their conclusion in the shoot-out is:

So well done to the HTC Desire – despite being the oldest on test, it's still the top smartphone in our eyes... and if something beats it in the next few months, we're looking forward to seeing that.

Winner: HTC Desire

So, yes, they do.

I think the tides are turning though. I've had my desire a few months now and since then 9 people I know have bought a desire, and only one an IPhone! It'll be Interesting what current iPhone users do come contract renewal time!

But their conclusion in the shoot-out is:

So, yes, they do.

A-ha! However by conflating price with battery life in the test (which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever) they have shoehorned a win for the Desire. If they had separated price and battery life iPhone wins.

That would be your opinion, not TechRadar's. The mechanism of their test is irrelevant - you don't have to agree with their conclusions, you just can't deny they made the conclusion.

Really? The article leaves a lot of holes anyway in their reasoning:

The Desire allows for
a) swapping of battery
b) adding an extended battery with twice the power

On top of that, I believe I read somewhere in the comments that they were running Android 2.1 and not Froyo which uses less power.

The ability to replace the battery makes the Desire win by default anyway. iPods and iPhones usually need to be replaced BECAUSE of battery issues so even if the Desire takes 10% more power than the iPhone, that makes more than up for it.

In general, I find that these versus articles always work in the same wrong way: they look at what the iPhone has, and then compares it to the other phones. They leave out the advantages of the other phone as well.

For example, the strongest aspect of Android is its open design yet the article doesn't mention a WORD of this massive advantage over the iPhone. THERE IS NO-ONE MONITORING AND CENSORING APPS ON THE ANDROID. There, I said it. Not to mention Apple can disable apps on your iPhone as well.

You may claim that most people wouldn't care about this, and I'd reply "nonsense". Emulators and porn are two big things. Considering the size of the porn industry, Apple may find they'll be losing a large market share to the younger smart phone users (and the older ones too of course :p).

Anyway, these type of articles need to start delving into the real benefits of phones instead of just comparing features both phones have.

and then it would be my turn to say "nonsense".

when will people realise that these meaningless iPhone vs The Rest "wars" fought out on internet forums have absolutely nothing, and i mean nothing, to do with the real world where normal people use phones to do normal things like making calls, sending texts and surfing the net.

the majority of people have never heard of emulators, widgets, rooting or fanboys and they don't access porn on their phones.

all they've heard is that the iPhone is a good phone that is simple to use. and it is.

Im with red for the most part... I don't dislike the iphone or ipod or ipad in its self, they are decent products. What I dont like is the way Apple twist the truth with its marketing and charge a premium because they can (see below about people just believing its better so are willing to pay that premium), its just lies a lot of the time...

The obvious one is the screen, on my desire at normal operating distance (and even up close tbh) I can not make out any pixelation, yet Apple claim we can and that their retina screen is better. I've played with a few iphone 4's and yes its nice, a million times better than the older iphones/pods, but better than mine? Not in any way I can tell, and if anything I like the way mine handles colours more :)

So anyway back to the main point, I dont like how people just presume that apple is best because thats what everyone says, when none of them seem to have done any real reading into it. Often when they tell me their iproduct is better ill ask "Why is it the better?", "Erm I have the wii fiii's(I know but its usually that sort of crap)", I say back, "So does mine...", "Erm, oh, it just is better ok!?". None have given a reasonable argument in its favour tbh, well except there are more apps, but then if you can get all 250k apps on your device then cool, go for it, infact if you can find a use androids 80k+ then equally go for it!

Just for a balanced view, there are a couple of things that apple do have which is atm better, and that is game support, and being able to use proxy, which we cant (google!?!?!?), and stopping bloat ware crap, as far as I can tell is about it... where as we all know the advantages we wield with android.

As to sound quality on MP3 players, I used my brother classic ipod touch for a little while and then bought me a Sony walkman because for 16GB it was only

So basically to summarise, people hear that apple are better so believe it without reading into it... its purly through good marketing, and I think that is wrong, its exploitation in a sense.

Apple is a business. It exists to make money. It makes money by selling products. It sells products by clever marketing.

Apple don't lie. Apple promotes its own products and services in a way which will make them attractive to the consumer.

if Nokia or HTC did the same, no-one would care at all.

Thanks for summarizing what I've been trying to say :D As much as people try to sidetrack the issue, the issue is very simple:

Many Apple users just buy Apple products because they're Apple products.

Not because they compared them and considered them the best, not because they know the features, not because they thought it was a good price/quality deal, not because they perform great, not because ... well you get the idea. They buy them because they're led to believe that they're the only right choice. That's why I called them sheep - because people who don't think for themselves and let the media directly influence what to think and buy ARE sheep.

In fact, a friend of mine who did marketing, used Apple for his thesis as a perfect example of a company that thrived on hype and creating a feeling of need without actually having to improve their hardware that much.

Ironically, Apple's success is not good for Apple users. Progress comes from competition and the more competitive a market is, the better the deals for the customers, the more features you'll see added, the more improvements you'll find, etc.

Proof of this, is how the iPhone 4 suddenly had multi tasking and a few other vital parts which "amazingly" appeared after Android already had those and was starting to nibble away at Apple's market share. THREE iPhones and several years it took before you could play music AND read an email.

i can see you have strong opinions on this touchy subject so if you want to hate apple for being successful and also be angry at people for buying an expensive phone because they choose to, please go ahead.
Or I don't like arguments that don't make sense :D You can't have it both ways, folks. You can't say "oh people aren't mindless sheep" and then basically go "They simply rush out to buy an expensive phone they don't need to do basic stuff on because they heard it's good" and think it makes sense.

If someone wants to buy a calculator, I won't be such a prick as to go "why don't you buy this laptop, it has a calculator program and looks so much cooler than just a calculator".
