Is Jelly Bean still on schedule?

I was predicting (or hoping!) that Samsung would at the very least announce a release schedule on or before Apples iPhone launch on the 12th.

It would make commercial sense - heres hoping!

I feel disappointed.

Not because Jelly bean isn't officially out yet, but for the plain fact that Samsung announced the release date to be 31st of August

makes me not trust their announcements no more

There was NEVER EVER any official information saying they would announce it on 31st. Plus on 31st, they said 'very soon' and I believe it will happen by the end of this week.

The thing that annoys me is not necessarily that it's not on yet but the lag time.

The fact that the carriers etc have not got an efficient system in order for owners of their phones to be able to upgrade their phones timely to the latest software is scandalous. Latest software is about security as much as else.

The situation is not acceptable at all.

I hate Apple but at least they have not got this fragmentation problem. Windows has avoided this also. Sadly Android has just not tackled it and actually have allowed it to worse.

Personally, I think in future all phones should be made with standard vanilla software (like Nexus). It will avoid daft situations like is happening at present where we don't know when the software will be upgraded, and it won't be for a while. "Maybe", "Soon", "this month", "next month" is just not any good.

Even with vanilla Android, there is still a lot of work for the OEMs to do to make the OS work with the phone's hardware. In fact, I doubt that the skins significantly delay updates.

Apple and Windows avoid this by having very few hardware platforms.

I'll repeat something I said in another Jellybean discussion.

These types of threads are where Android gets this unjust tarnished image in regards to updates. If JB were never mentioned, people would still be gushing over ICS and truly enjoying their fine piece of hardware. Mention that Google is working on a new OS, though? All of a sudden everyone lots of people start bitching and moaning about their carrier, how long you have to wait for updates, whether or not their phone will be supported, blah blah blah.

It is almost as though they'd be better off not working on that sort of development. Every time they show signs of progressing, people get all sorts of pissed that they aren't on the leading edge any longer. Guess what? That's how technology works.

Give me a device that works really well day 1 and maintain it so that it continues to function as well on the 700th day as it does on the 1st day. If the powers that be see fit to add some increased functionality and new features? Icing on the cake.

I feel disappointed.

Point proven, right here. Samsung didn't say it would be out on the 31st, someone on Twitter did and you took it as gospel. That feeling of disappointment sitting heavy in your gut? You can blame yourself for that one. Is your phone worse now than it was a week ago?

The same people that will be rubbing one out to all of the features that Jellybean brings them, will be the same people complaining, when the next OS is on the horizon, about how they are "stuck" with JB.

I wouldn't presume anything, I tell people "soon" sometimes just to keep them quiet. Either way I'll keep an eye on these boards & twitter, that way I'll know when it's out :)

I would've said the same a week ago. That is, until I tried JB DLI1.

JB brings quite a few nice goodies and I am happy to be using it. No idea why so few folk install DLI5 around here.

Sorry I just don't buy that. With yourt attitude nothing would ever improve or evolve. The old ' If it ain't broke...' argument.

JB is an incremental release but it does have Google Now and Project Butter which are worth getting a little excited about!

I agree. Nobody would be happy if Samsung suddenly announces that the S3 wouldn't get JB, I would be pissed off and I'm not one of those that are desperately waiting for it. It's a great update, it will make the S3 even smoother and has extra features like Google Now (which I have tried and it is awesome), so obviously even those that aren't desperate will still be pissed off if they didn't get it.

Same here, if the update was just Google Now i would be more than happy, it looks great.

I'm usually on the latest version. I'm on the latest ics presently. I would have gone jb but I don't want aosp yet and I need a good kernel.

Id be upset if they turned around now - after announcing jb and said "no". That said if they said no originally i'd live with it.

I don't expect updates. Two identical phones, one that will never be updated and one that will, i'll go for the one that gets updates.

If one has a good developer community, that may trump the updates.

I'm not ready to lose samsung functionality on the s3 so I'm hoping an update comes my way. Not enough that I'm on it now instead if using my favourite kernel. If I don't get an update, I wont be throwing my phone at the wall or bashing out an angry email to samsung or anything

What bvbull200 is also trying to say is there are too many people on this forum and others what read a post about "I have a friend" or "A reliable source told me", or a twitter post mentioned a date and they they get all pissed off when the release doesn't happen on that date.

Don't blame Samsung because you got your hopes up on rumors. Samsung said JB is coming, they have not said when. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your phone until JB gets here.

I installed a JB leak just to try it out and I was throwing many questions at it and it seemed to answer 99% of them. It even told me where the nearest bus stop was :D

I agree apart from the bit where you said "if they said no originally i'd live with it", I would be mega-pissed if I bought a top of the rang phone and found out it wouldn't get any Android updates, but like you said I wouldn't be throwing my phone at the wall or sending emails I'd probably just refuse to buy a Samsung phone again.

I can see many updates coming to the S3, including Key Lime Pie.

I frequently ask it to give me directions to my campus by bus. It tells me when I need to leave my house, what bus stop to go to, when the bus departs and what transfers I need to make.

Its awesome

Yep. That JB has not yet been released, and all we have it rumors, in no way affects the quality of the user-experience of the S3 as it currently stands.

Well....it shouldn't, anyways. Try telling that to the "disappointed" people, though.

This was posted 9 August

"If Samsung decides to make the update available to the users it will be released upon successful completion of development."
Google though confirmed in its keynote that Android 4.1 would be coming to the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus in mid-July.

Update: Apparently Samsung is currently testing Jelly Bean on the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S2 and is expected to roll the update out to customers in August or September.

Update: The latest line from Samsung is: "The rollout of Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, has started with Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ and Nexus S devices. We will announce updates to the rest of our Galaxy portfolio of devices in due course."

Update:Independent website Sam Mobile claims it has word from 'inside sources' that Android 4.1 will be rolled out to the Galaxy S3 at the end of Q3 or the beginning of Q4. It goes on to say that the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note are next in line for the update after the S3.
