Is the Droid X really that bad

brute, try out the newest version of froyo, most of us rooted users, have absolutely no issues, because the motoblur that is on the phone is horrible, once your rooted, and you flash something like Apex 1.4.1 or Liberty you will be amazed at how much better your phone works.
and if you want try flashing the GB leak, there are more than a few of us who can walk you through step by step right then and there. its all easy! especially when you have us here to help you, out of the box stock i dont think the DX is a top contender with some other phones, but rooted and romed, this phone is the best, it really is the flagship of verizon, its a shame its locked, but venture over to the all things root section of the forum, and ask to be rooted, and what steps you need, your going to have to spend a few bucks, a MUST have is Droid X Bootstrapper ($2) and every rooter needs Root Explorer($cant remember) only because you will need it one day, and its great to have!
so venture over to our side and run things with us, and then if you are dissatisfied with your X then let us know

After going thru 6 Incredibles I finally agreed to try a Droid X...let me say it was the best thing I did! Dont get me wrong I loved my Incredible...i kept getting the low on space error message when i had plenty of space available. I love the bigger screen! The battery is sooooooo much better also. So far im very happy with it
is it true that when you get a phone replacement from asurion that you have to pay 100 dollars for the phone

Not sure that it's $100, but I'm sure you have to pay a deductible.
yeah i already knew about the deductible, i just heard that you have to pay something else along side of it that pushed it around $100

i have always heard you pay the $85 and thats it, there is something about having to return the phone and if you dont you pay full price. thats why i always say its missing

i do remember that it was $85 but i havent had to do an insurance replacement since the eris came out. so lets hope they haven't raised the prices, which they may have considering all the problem free devices they get in that people brick.

No complaints here. Stock launcher is a bit choppy but running Launcher Pro or Go Launcher it runs smooth as silk and as fast as anything out there (yes even the DX2 despite the high quadrant scores)
My, or yours or anyones for that matter shouldn't suck when you pay as much for it as you do.
you all have done crazy upgrades and hacks and so forth and turned the phone into something great. So let me understand here:
I payed 300+ dollars for a phone, got on a contract, under the companies claim that this phone is awesome, stable, compatible, fast, etc etc.
BUT they forgot to tell me that I need to hack it and change everything around and ilegally customize it in order to see the phones full potential???? ???????seriously????????
That is like buying a honda civic, changing the engine, ripping out the interior putting on a body kit and new suspension and saying its a honda civic, STILL. Yeah- no.
My disappointment is in the fact that from factory this phone is crap.
For me, having my phone lock up as im writing a 12 page paper that im sending through email not get there sucks. Major dinasour balls.
Having my camara lock up as im taking pictures of my text book pages so I can use them as notes sucks specially when the canada says " can't read file" oh f*** you. And that's just a preview of the head ache
I got friends with iphones evi 4s and im the last horse in the race everytime. None of those phones are hacked.
So no its not just me. Its a crappy phone.
a great phone is great when its dependable, fast, sharp, reliable and good bragging rights.
I am the type of person that likes things to work from the get go. I like muscle cars with 347s in them not honda civics with body kits and exhausts.

You must have gotten a lemon, if I were you I would return it while you still can.
Just to let you know, rooting and customizing your phone is not illegal, but it does void your warranty.
Since were on the subject of illegal, that little thing called "tethering" that prompted you to root your phone to begin with is considered "illegal" (against TOS) by VZW......just thought I'd point that out
I have formatted the phone many times, I finally gave up on it when I noticed the problem wasn't going away but as time goes by I see the phone get worse and worse.

Im on an extended battery and it dies with in 6 to 8 hrs of normal use. About 4 to 5 with constant use. I guess im considered a heavy user.
I need to format again and reroot and install something to remove the bloat ware but I can't do any of that right now cause im always too busy and I need to do a ton of research cause there's so many ways to do it and themes and roms and yadda yadda yadda and I have no clue what's what.
And I just read that netflix doesn't work on here $-&-#-%*#-!!!! Sigh

You just have to step back a little bit and approach things more positively; it sounds like you are really frustrated, and therefore needlessly making things more difficult for yourself than they should be.
Just do a little reading, inform yourself, and if you need further assistance people here will help you.
I'm not trying to be a punk or anything, but, being so negative turns people away and less willing to help you.
P.S. Netflix does work on both GB and Froyo.......I've got it working on both
I suggest you go to the "All things root" section.

I understand I'm not trying to say you're lying. Just that I've never heard of anyone having such problems with the phone. I don't even have root or anything and my X never had any of those problems. I am an avid music listener and I sync all my music using iSyncr and I never get crashes on it or does it fail to recognize my music files. I guess it may just be bad luck on your part.

Brute, lots of people like the iPhone4 - maybe that would be a better option for you. If I had as many problems with my phone as you've had, I'd definitely look for something else.
Personally I've had no major problems with my DX and am very happy with it, yeah its rooted, overclocked and undervolted - I'm one of those people who love to mod. Everyone's different, but there are so many phones to choose from, you should be able to find something that will satisfy you.
Not trying to hassle you about it, but no one should be unhappy with the choices available.

thats impossible to say...there are always going to be defective units of anything...
i disagree with that...in the past i have run some of the Froyo ROMS (Liberty and ApeX mainly) and they were great...but as for "crazy upgrades and hacks" i disagree...the vast majority of my time with my X has been running Motorola produced software...and the phone has been great...
disagree again honestly...all you need is one that is running properly...and obviously you do not have that...my phone ran absolutely brilliantly on Froyo...the only change that i felt was ever a necessity with this phone was to install a third party launcher (like LPP, ADW, or GO)...the stock laucher from Motorola is just too choppy for me..but that is a software issue, not hardware...
also...what illegal modding are we doing??..
sure its still a civic...and no its not like what you just described...because the "engine" of the phone is its processor...nobody here is changing that out at all...
see the problem is...this is NOT a FACT...your unfortunate experience with the phone has been poor...but its obvious from the other members of the forum that it is not FACT that the phone is crap...and if every one (or even a lot of them) behaved the way yours has then Moto/VZW would be in a lot more hot water over this...
of course that sucks...but in all honesty...complaining about it is not fixing the problem...call Verizon and tell them the story...demand a NEW unit...not a factory refurb...but NEW as a replacement and see how the phone runs...
then once it comes be diligent about what apps you install...don't just go crazy installing whatever you want...run the phone box stock for a few days and see how it goes...then install a few of the apps you want...run it for a few days and see how it goes...
there is a serious potential that some app you're running is causing a problem...
and that is NOT normal...again...CALL VZW
and the X has been that since day 1 for the vast majority of its owners...
first of all, this has nothing to do with the topic at hand...lol and secondly you obviously don't really know much about cars if you think its muscle cars with 347's that work from the get go and civcs that have problems....
see here is the problem...i know lots of people, with lots of different smart phones...and i can tell you that there is not a single phone out there where you can guarantee you won't get a lemon...
i know people with X's that have had nothing but issues...i know people with OG Droid's that barely stay on for more than 5 minutes...i know people with DInc's, and Evo's and TBolt's that are horrendous...i also know people with iPhone's that will tell you it was the worst purchase they ever made because the phone locks up every time its hooked to a computer to sync or update...
but i also know people with all of those phones that swear by them and wouldn't buy another phone if you put a gun to their head...
everyone hates that....but as an engineer you should be in the best position to realize that lemons are unavoidable...there are going to be defective units in every production run...
- get it replaced with a new unit
- getting worse over time leads me to believe that there is potentially an app causing serious problems...
look, i hate to sound like a broken record...but complaining ain't gonna fix it....get on the phone and make them send you a NEW one...
i would love to see the battery breakdowns of your phone....id like to investigate your problems further...but if you're actually using the phone constantly for 4-5 hours (meaning the screen is on for 5 hours) then yeah...that is going to kill ANY phone...don't expect an Evo or iPhone to cure that problem...5 hours of screen on is A LOT...
1. No you don't need to freeze the bloat...the phone should run perfectly fine with it on there...
2. what you need to do is call VZW and have them send you a NEW replacement...not a refurb...
3. there are not really a ton of ways to remove bloat...you either rename them yourself...or let titanium freeze them...
4. part of your problem im gathering is hidden in this paragraph...when you start going on about themes and roms...it kinda leads me to believe you're "willy nilly" flashing themes and roms, and that can cause lots of problems...
netflix works fine on Froyo and GB...

One could visit macrumors and find iPhone posts in there where the only solution is get a replacement phone. If the phone isnt working right for you brute, sorry to hear that.
But its far from crap from factory. It might have cons compared to other phones, all phones have pros n cons. But I can only tell you if it was crap, I wouldnt be still using it. Let me put it another way: BOTH my Droid 1 and DX1 outlasted my Omnia 1. My Omnia 1 didnt make it 6 months. I almost got an iPhone cuz of my Omnia 1...yea it almost had me switching carriers cuz I thought Verizon's service has getting bad too. Turned out it was my phone.
My less than techy girlfriend wouldnt be still using my DX1 now going on 2 weeks. I am on the verge of begging her for it back...lol I got my phone July last year...so for my almost 1 y.o. phone to have her satisfied....it has to be doing something right. She was coming from a Blackberry tho...lol and after using a Blackberry for some months she wants either an Android phone or an iPhone.

Brute, call Verizon CS and tell them everything you have said here - I'm sure there are options aside from having another DX sent out to you. They might even offer an iPhone4 or something equivalent. I'd think that would certainly beat the frustration of trying to put up with a defective phone...

i would sbf back to stock before you do it, cause you did say you were rooted
that way when you turn the device in and they send you a replacement, you wont get charged a reshelving fee.
i have had this phone since launch day, and i absolutely love this thing, the only time i have problems with it, is the stock froyo launcher that it came with.
the gingerblur that we have is incredibly smooth, with some choppy points.
it is a phone and a mini computer, if you ever work in the IT field you will know that when you get in hundreds of computers or even laptops, chances are out of the box they will run fine at first, and then a select few or even 2 will lose the image on the hard drive, thus creating a problem for users.
your situation is just like that, we are recommending you call VZW and speak with customer service, the more you complain about this issue the more you are no offense, making yourself look bad.
we are here to help you no matter what, but we are a group of friends on the internet, we cannot give you a new Droid X.
it seems that you would rather have the iPhone anyway, if you want, im not tryin to steer you away from the android community, cause we are here for you no matter what in this forum. but try out an iphone if you wish, it cannot hurt right? get a replacement X that is a must for you right now, and when your contract is up or you feel like spending the money buy an iphone, if its better than your X sell the X on ebay, or craigslist, people love the droid x so you wont hold onto it for too long.
i hope you take our advice and call CS, you will be much happier knowing a replacement is coming, but just to warn you the warranty on the phone is 1 year after purchase, when you get a replacement i think it is 90 or 30 days.... not sure. but ask them that when you are on the phone with them.
i got vzw to trade my ex wifes crackberry bold for a refurb droid 2, when she left i got the phone back, i sold it 2 days later, because the droid line sells fast. if you have a good price hers went for ($200) stock froyo
