Is the Droid X really that bad

I usually just eye the Droid Incredible forums because that's the phone I have and I have been noticing that the Droid X get's bashed a lot over there for being to laggy and buggy etc....
I'm only curious because of the news that Asurion is out of Incredibles so if my phone breaks I would be getting a DX so...
What's your opinion on the phone
you know i have probs with it dropping my 3g non stop and this is my 2nd unit and verizon nor will motorola will help try to fix the prob but instead blame the user i wish i never bought the phone from the start

LOL....I just spent about 15 minutes explaining my entire situation with this thing and when i clicked post quick reply, it froze and i had to do a battery pull, lmao.

Ok so, long story short.

Lets agree to disagree, thanks for all the advice, i will sure try and take it and will be on here asking for help i'm sure. I don't want to keep making this guys thread about me.

"Is the droid x really that bad"- From my experience, you're better off with a string and a cup dude.

dude we are tryin to tell you to call vzw and get a replacement, you obviously have a bad one, the phone is not like that at all. if you dont want to do it thats fine, but you have not tried every aspect to try and correct the situation so you cant expect us to feel sorry for you, im sorry but thats just how it is at the moment.

once you call customer service you will get the opportunity to get it replaced FREE OF CHARGE!!! i dont see what is so hard about calling CS and getting your phone fixed

truth ^^^

hate to say this...but its starting to just sound like he is simply trying to hate on the phone...and doesn't want to do anything about it...

^Hey its cool. As long as it runs good for those that are happy....lol.

Those not happy, only thing you can do is either get a replacement or get a different phone.

I understand I'm not trying to say you're lying. Just that I've never heard of anyone having such problems with the phone. I don't even have root or anything and my X never had any of those problems. I am an avid music listener and I sync all my music using iSyncr and I never get crashes on it or does it fail to recognize my music files. I guess it may just be bad luck on your part.

Between my wife and myself we are on our 7th phone and this one is worse than all the others! I understand exactly what brute is going through.
It is EXTREMELY frustrating spending $300 per phone (two phones) and expecting a certain level of functionality and not even getting basic usability out of them! These phones are horrendous - and if it's not the phone then it's got to be that motoblur crap. Either way you look at it there are a lot of people that are buying phones that are not functioning as advertised. This experience has seriously soured my desire to deal with Verizon and Motorola phones.
Again, I agree with numerous posts on here about how people should NOT need to run custom roms in order to get a basic level of usability out of these phones.

like we told brute, you need to call CS, or else your just causing more issues for yourself by letting them continue to get worse.

i dont understand some things, if my phone was acting in a way you all describe it, i would call CS and continue to call them til the problem is resolved, and if the the backups do the same, then i will continue to change the phones out. my phone works fine with the moto blur, even gingerblur, i just cannot imagine the issues you 2 are having. but just call customer service and get them fixed!!!

Saint....I'm not gonna dispute they're having problems. I feel for every 1 person thats having serious problems, there are 5 more that are very happy with their phone. The ratio is probably bigger than that .

I can understand how they feel. I have basically shunned any Samsung phone based on my experience with them years ago. GS2 is on my list for new phone, but its on a list with other phones...

My Samsung smartphone was so bad I almost switched carriers thinking Verizon service was getting bad. Turns out it was the phone...lol.

This is what imma do, I'll use the same argument I use when ppl say Android is trash, garbage, sucks:

If it was THAT bad....ppl wouldnt be getting it. Word of mouth woulda did it in. The Droid X is in the top 5 phones sold last year. Along with the EVO 4G, thats amazing considering its a phone some consider too big and ugly.

Either way you look at it there are a lot of people that are buying phones that are not functioning as advertised. This experience has seriously soured my desire to deal with Verizon and Motorola phones.

I believe there are some people that are buying phones that are not functioning as advertised, not alot. Its what I truly believe.

I got my DX1 in July when it launched. Know when I put a custom ROM on my DX1? Dec of last year. Why did I do it? Not cuz I needed to, cuz I wanted to. Yea custom ROMs can fix some issues, but if that was the case....for the Droid X from July to Dec be in the top 5 phones sold last year, that wouldnt have happened. Word of mouth woulda did the Droid X in.

Know what isnt in the top 5 phones sold? The Fascinate....well...basically the entire Galaxy S line from last year. Not knocking it, but it just isnt in the top 5. The Droid X is. Thats 1 phone against 4....(now I sound like an iPhone fanboy...AAHHHH!!)

Saint, you have provided some very valuable advice - the majority of our replacement phones have been refurbished so I will contact cs and ask for new units.
However, I did just install Liberty and first impression is it's not half bad. I've already noticed increased responsiveness and better functionality. If this continues I may have the phone I wanted from the beginning. I bought this phone because of it's stellar specs, let's hope it functions as intended. Now, if I could just get my yahoo accounts to load... LOL

Make the switch to google mail and leave yahoo. I did that about 5 years ago. I have google mail check my yahoo account through pop still even though I rarely get anything there anymore. You can even respond using your yahoo address through gmail.

i had a problem with yahoo accounts as well, but they do work with the yahoo app, just not as well as the gmail app :p
liberty is good, are you on the froyo or the gb liberty?? and beware of the refurbs the warranty on them is not as long as you may think unfortunately, which i think is a load of crap, that the original phone wasnt cutting it, but the new phone is, but one day may not, and the warranty will be out, its a load if you ask me. i just hope that for your and your wifes sake your phones end up being the way you want it.

it is a shame that you have to root and rom your phone to get it to run as smooth as it should, but that is how it is, bloatware is horrible, but gingerblur is pretty nice, no clue why but it is, you should try it out :)

Ok so,
I’m writing this because some of you seem to think that I am purposely making this difficult for me or not trying to resolve my issues, so I’m going to explain myself.
I originally had an iphone 3gs, but I was paying 114 a month for it and it was too costly, books alone and class fees kill me. So my friend suggested I join Verizon with him, he said I could get the iphone 4 through them so I said ok. So we went to Verizon and they told me that the iphone wasn’t out yet- and that they weren’t going to give it to new members until all the old members had the preorders, which could take up to 2 months. So the salesman suggested I open an account and get another phone meanwhile, so I looked around and got the droid x, it seemed to be the best choice.
I came back after the phone was out, with in my 30 days for the switch. I get there and now the sales man is telling me I can’t get the iphone 4. I spoke to all the managers in that store and even had the salesman who helped me speak to them and the end result was that I still couldn’t get it because I had a new account and their rules were strict about it… yadda yadda.
So, that alone ticked me off to no end, but still it was a better deal for me because I went from paying 114 a month to 38 a month, yay. So I figured the phone was a good choice any how until I started to load music into it, all my contacts, a few games, which I ended up uninstalling because I thought they were part of my problem, then I finally rooted for the tethering feature.
My first phone was crushed by my friends dad, I payed 85 dollars to have a second 1 sent to me, the second phone I got had the same issues I was having with the first 1, which are the issues I explained in many of the other posts. Bad battery life, unreliable, undependable, freezed all the time, doubled my contacts, lost emails/bad syncs, my connection never had more than 2 bars and my internet was always on 1X connection unless I was outside then it was 3g but still only 2 bars.
I talked to tech support, did countless formats and tower resets, yadda yadda. Nothing- they sent me a 3rd phone, which is what I have right now. My third 1.
The phone has a ton of software instability issues- that is why all these updates keep coming out, the droid system is obviously buggy and Verizon is trying to correct their mistakes, thus giving us 2.2. 2.3 etc etc etc. (Now this gingerbread thingy, followed by honeycomb?)
I am, apparently stuck with this phone. And my argument has always been that I have done as much as I could to make this phone work properly, even left it practically stock for the sake of stability and reliability and it has failed miserably!
I am going to put out another post, hopefully after this reply since I’m tired of studying and its 4am and I am still wide awake- in which I will post requesting help on how to properly format, root, and possibly theme and rom the phone, ( I think theming and roming are the same thing) and I hope that you guys can give me your advice on what is best for me considering gingerbread coming out on Friday( or so they say) and whatever other factors come up based on what I’m trying to do to the phone…
Oh, and I got Netflix to work- yay! Watching trigun right now! J
So again- I am not trying to be a sour puss, I’ve just had a HORRIBLE experience with Verizon and this phone- I feel I got cheated and lied to horribly. I am enjoying the money I’m saving though- that’s always a plus!

I've read chnhwk's posts and I'm a sad way I'm happy someone gets me, lol. I'm sorry you're going through it too. But just as you guys don't understand how we have these issues and "arent trying to correct them" I don't understand how you guys think its ok for these phones to have these many issues. Alot of the replies are geared towards "keep calling and exchanging them until you get a good 1"

Some of us don't have the luxury of tinkering with our phones or the time or sitting for hrs with tech support or driving back and forth to a verizon store to try and work things out. I'm up at 5, in school at 645 til 3 pm at work from 4 to 11 with time in between or days off spent studying and so forth.

I'd like to pick up the phone and open the browser and get on 3g, not 1X and spend 10 minutes loading a page. i'd like to plug in my headset and listen to music and not get a "cannot read file" error message, i'd like to open up my map app and not have to do a battery pull cause it froze, i'd like to hold a phone call, i'd like to record my girlfriend doing a sexy dance for me and be able to play the file back, i'd like to take a picture of her amazing tata's and be able to view it later! But these are not things that are happening!!!!!
I shouldn't have to skip a heart beat every time i try to send an important document through my phone and hope to god my instructor gets it! seriously...

for what you pay, and what it claims it IS and "droid does" it should not have to be hacked/rooted/rommed/themed to get BASIC functionality out of it.

Ok god please, lets stop i'm done!!! agh!! no more....

I'm sorry how are you paying $38 a month? The Data Plan you need for the X alone is $30 a month.

Also are you synching contacts with Gmail? I have never had a double contact issue. As for bars, that is not the Droid X. It is the area you're in. I have a friend with a iPhone 4 on VZW and I have an X. I generally have better signal than him wherever we are together.
As for the updates you say keep coming out, you do realize that Apple also releases updates for the iPhone right? This is no different. They are mostly adding features not fixing errors. I'm not sure what kind of trouble you're having with your music files though. I can offer one suggestion. iSyncr. I went from a 3GS on AT&T to a X and I used iSyncr to sync iTunes with my phone. I have never had my music player crash or miss recognize files this way.

I should mention I don't root my phone or do anything of the sort. The only thing I have ever done to the phone is delete all the widgets off Motoblur and install GoLauncher from the market.

Also I'm not sure if this is it or not but a lot of your problems seem to stem from the SD card. Have you tried formatting it or replacing it with another one?

That's your first mistake. Stock, the DX isn't the best. At this point, when Gingerbread comes out I can tell you that your phone will perform much better.

Stock X here and I like it that way. I'm not sure if GoLauncher counts as a modification but other than that and themeing it from Golauncher, I prefer it that way.

I wouldn't call using goLauncher as remaining stock. The UI is the worst part of a stock DX IMO. By replacing the launcher you have solved 90% of it's issues.

I've had my replacement phone for less than 24 hours and I'm already on the phone with Verizon asking for new replacements. This is the worst phone of all of them! I had to call from my wifes phone because mine was literally unable to make the phone call. The screen appears to be faulted and randomly selects whatever it feels like. Ugh. Hopefully two NEW phones running something other than motoblur will work for us.

I'm sure I'm going to take some heat for this post. This isn't directed at anyone in particular.

I think some people have a very different opinion of what "defective" means. I'm sorry, but the odds of having 4-5 "defective" phones is incredibly slim.

Sure, my phone has rebooted spontaneously, I've had programs force close. Right now, my phone reboots any time I try to install 9 innings baseball. Is my phone "defective"? Would I force Verizon to provide me a warranty replacement? Absolutely, not.

Sure, there are defective phones out there, no doubt, but I'd guess that a very high percentage of phones returned to Verizon as "defective" are because of user error, user misunderstanding or even due to Verizon not properly educating the customer and tech support people not isolating the issue properly.

That's all got to be very costly to these carriers (and in turn, consumers).

motoblur lag can cause that

Have to agree with Lex - and there isn't a phone on this forum or any other that doesn't have complaints about it one way or another. As I've said before, I'm happy with my Droid X. Is it perfect? Certainly not - I've had issues with it in the past --- but have been able to work through them one way or another, especially with help from members on this forum!

But of all the phones I've owned, the DX has been the most trouble-free and certainly the most versatile and useful. I haven't had any of the issues that some posters in this thread have complained about, my experience has been just the opposite - my phone is extremely reliable and does pretty much everything I ask of it (never dropped a call, never had any issues with 3G signal, almost never reboots, etc.). Yeah, there is some lag occasionally but for everything else I enjoy with the phone lag isn't a big issue for me, and I understand GB should pretty much take care of that.

Also for those complaining about battery - I'm seeing great stats from mine. I can go well over a day on average with the stock cell. Granted I have it configured to allow for long battery life, but I'm seeing awesome bang for the buck considering all this phone does.

Just wanted to share some positive feedback here, I know most who are happy with the phone probably don't post as much as those who aren't...

Trust me, I was like those that arent happy with the DX1 with my Omnia 1. Some ppl swear it was a great phone, some of us couldnt stand it. Compared to the Omnia 1, the DX is worlds better. Compared to the Omnia 1 my Droid 1 is worlds better. Considering how many times I dropped both and it still runs good...

This is just one of those areas some of us will have to agree to disagree. To the topic title, is the Droid X really that bad.....IMHO the answer is no. Are there some Droid X's that are really that bad? Yes. Is it the majority of Droid X's? No.

There were issues I didnt like that were probably universal across each n every Omnia 1. The screen is one. The issues some are having that posted in this thread.....are not universal across each n every Droid X.

Lag swiping home screens and unlocking the phone, yea that could be considered universal, good ole Blur.... (Blur on the DX2 and GB for the DX1 is better) The phone rebooting constantly, not reading mp3's, having bad reception, having bad battery life, constant battery pulls, constant freezing...those things are not universal across each n every Droid X.

If it was it wouldnt have got the reviews it got. If it was you would see more ppl in this thread saying its the worst phone they ever had.

The flip side is battery life is/was a constant gripe for Incredible users, and it drove some to the Droid X. Battery life seems to be HTC's Achilles heel and is probably universal across each n every Incredible. It will rear its ugly head on WP7 phones....rated talk time for the Droid X? 8 hours. For 2 HTC WP7 phones? 4.5 and 5+ hours...

A respected tech site like Anandtech did battery life tests and the Droid X was among the best. The only phone better with battery life when the X launched? The iPhone and probably some Blackberry. As of right now, the only Android phones on Anandtech's battery life benchmark thats better is probably the Droid 2, Atrix and Mytouch 4G. (it needs more phones added)

AnandTech - Bench - Smartphone

Phonearena normally does good estimates of battery life. Droid X ranks among the best for them too. Battery life is not one of the problems with the Droid X universally.
