ive left desire..here is why

Well I have had the iphone 3 and the iphone 3GS and now I have the Desire and the Desire Z, the best thing and the only good thing about the iphone is the money I pocketed when I sold both on E-bay!!! A SUCKER is born every minute and boy did I pull in two when I sold those phone's!!!

How come my iPhone friends all say that they have to charge every day if the battery is so magical?

Also, there are two kinds of iPhone owners:

  • The ones who think "OMG I HAVE AN IPHONE!1!1!!!111 I R SO KEWL, CHECK OUT MY PHONE GUYZ!!111!!!11." These people are all about the status symbol that the iPhone for some reason is.
  • The ones who realize a phone is just a phone and that no one really cares what kind of phone you have. These people like the fact that it just works, and does what they want.

The iPhone is a beautiful device, but I perfer function over form. Although the Desire is far from ugly.

Erm, hours and usage are two separate things.

And, if what you say is true, you know damn well that the iPhone4 battery is better.

no, it seriously isnt
im surrounded by iphone4 users at work as well has being able to take one and play with it as long as i wanted

its about the same, most of them have their phones on docks during the day
as soon as they play games or start using it for calls it drops rapidly just like the desire does

there are 3 things that are better on iphone

1. screen
2. graphics in games are phenominal especially the new ones
3. multipoint touch

batter is not a factor and without trying to sound too much of an arse, i am far in touch with the goings on of mobiles in the industry than you would believe

How come my iPhone friends all say that they have to charge every day if the battery is so magical?

Yup, my friends said the same thing. Charging their iphones multiple times a day in fact (in the afternoon while in the office and they're not slackers either who are glued to their phones, and also while at home to ensure they can get by until tomorrow's afternoon at least).

Don't know what the big deal is about everyday charging. You guys have problems with your electricity supply or something?

I really love my Desire, and enjoy being part of this forum community; but I rally can't understand the lack of tolerance for people who make a positive comment about, or even dare to mention the i-Phone! My humble oppinion is that neither the Desire, nor the i-Phone are all things to all men. The reasons we prefer the Desire, or the Android platform in general, are exactly the same reasons why others might prefer the i-Phone.

The main reason why I prefer the Desire is that it offers an open platform, and that I can customize it to look and to function the way I like. I must admit that, at least in the first couple of months, the most time I spent with the Desire, I spent doing things "for" the phone, rather than "with" the phone; fooling around with Launcher Pro Plus, Widget Locker, Apps Organizer, and Desktop Visualizer; installing and uninstalling countless widgets; creating custom wallpapers, icons, docks in Photoshop etc... And I enjoyed every minute (until I started to encounter memory problems, that is)...

About at the same time I got my Desire, replacing my HTC P4350, I started looking for a suitable phone for the wife, because her three-year-old clamshell Samsung was obviously about to kick the bucket. Let me tell you my wife is a very bright woman, an associate professor at the university, but at the same time quite the technophobe, who approaches the TV-remote with mistrust and scepticism! I got her the i-Phone 3GS, and she started to use it efficiently in no time, and loved it to bits!

At the end of the day, I think I made the right choice in both cases. She is not intimidated by her phone, and I am not feeling confined by mine (well, except for the memory that is)...

see, thats the one thing apple got right with the phone over the rest of the market...though im not going to include Android with that, as we all knew from the beginning that Android was to be an open source platform which would allow far more playing around than most 'closed' phones without the need to root/jailbreak straight away...

I am not ashamed to say I had an old 3G iphone and I loved it...beautiful screen, even then and just great all round phone....BUT it always felt too closed in...it was also hampered by Apples view on alternate applications which could be seen as a 'rival' to its own software...for example the LONG running debate with Opera Mini...which ok is resolved now, but at the time, we HAD to use safari...and that would cause me HUGE bills with my net :( I also did feel I had spent ALOT of money on it and I just couldnt customise it the same way I had done with much cheaper and much older phones..

That being said, its still a nice phone and although alot of handsets have been hit with no call issues (not just the iphone4 but older too...mine included lol) they did get it right with the fact the 'casual' phone user can pick up...play...put down...done...

at the end of the day....we are pretty much all geeks here...so love spending lots of time and attention tweaking things in android :D

HTC makes good phones apart from one respect. They use a stupidly low amount of NAND storage in all their Android and Windows Phones.
512MB of ROM is madness. The iPhone 4 has 16/32GB. The Palm Pre 2 16GB. The Optimus 7 16GB. The Samsung Galaxy S 8/16GB. The Motorola Droid 2/Milestone 2 has 16GB.
I don't care about install to SD. Many apps don't support it. In any case MicroSD is always slower than NAND. Clearing caches, data and so forth is madness on a phone.
On Windows Phone 7 HTC were so stingy that they only used 512MB NAND ROM and installed 8GB/16GB microSD cards (that are inaccessible) because it was cheaper.
On the iPhone there are massive games like FIFA 11 (854 MB), Madden 2011 (326MB). Even if these games were available for the Desire, they would run like crap even on a class 6 card.
HTC sort this out. And people tell me why hardly anyone picks up on such a serious flaw.

What exactly gives us (HTC users) the right to openly piss on iPhone user for the sole reason that they are iphone users, when such blind stupidity is exactly what we blame iphone users for? We're here to discuss the HTC Desire not circlejerk on what makes us better persons than iphone users. Pathetic.

It's also quite interesting to notice that all "LOL IPHONE LOLOOLOLOLOL U STOOPID" "LOLLLL DAMN STR8 BRO FKN A U SURE SHOWED HIM *pat in the back*" come from the same group of people. Grow up, seriously.

edit for those who didn't get my point: Please, be tolerant. :)

These threads bring out the worst in people. Where as its good to spark debate, this particular debate is very, very tired.

Its the same people hating the iphone, the same people defending the iphone and the same people hating the iphone haters.

may aswell be an iphone forum.

I do not see a reason why this has gone to what it is know.

The guy doesn't like his Desire and bought a phone that he thinks is better based on his speculation. That's it. Provide facts but in a sensitive way, not this rubbish.

Anyways, the battery like of the Desire is better than the iPhone, it is also cheaper. Buy a spare battery for your Desire than to waste more money on iPhone.

The screen on the iPhone is great love that sweet sweet AMOLED.

Right, the thread has been cleaned and infractions have been given.

For those saying why aren't the mods shooting these threads down, members are free to post as they wish as long as it doesn't contravene the site rules. If there is room for debate the thread will continue as it has done in this case. If there is no room for debate then nobody will reply and the thread will soon disappear down the topic list.

If you don't like the thread topic then stay well clear and move on to something else. DO NOT insult members for creating a thread that does not contravene the site rules.

I trust any further discussion or debate will be amicable.

Bluenova, I broadly agree with your comments on the need to keep things civil and open, but there is a legitimate issue relating to the social benefit of forums.

Consumers increasingly look to the web in general and forums in particular, for impartial information to help them with their purchase decisions. The comments from actual users of a given product or service play an increasingly important part in our decision whether to buy or not, and as such it is vital that this information is impartial.

Retailers well understand this fact and it is not unknown for them to plant positive but unattributed posts about their own products or negative posts about their competitors. This is not paranoia, and in my role as a social media consultant I have come across many instances of such dubious practice.

Of course the catch 22 of this is that by posting this piece the thread will have been bumped back up the list, thus potentially helping the person who created it if there aims was less than pure!

Now this does not mean that all negative posts should be censored, indeed to do so would in itself negate the consumer benefit of such information. But similarly there is a need to monitor suspicious threads, such as those from individuals who have never posted on a site and then suddenly post a diatribe condemning a given product. I'm not saying that is the case in this instance, but I do see threads from time to time which have a 'funny smell' to say the least.

Great and informative post! :)

This is an HTC Desire forum after all: maybe anything Apple should be locked or deleted...would avoid flaming all together?

I don't understand why people post threads on phone forums that break down the phone where the forum is all about...
Post that on the forum that supports the phone you've bought...

You would avoid flaming and insulting and it's much better for the community all arround...
Customers would be better of this way to...

A question to the OP if he's still around: How much better is the life of the battery on your iPhone? And are you doing comparative tasks on both devices? Or are you just saying based on your personal opinion that Apple has the best batteries?

Would you be willing to describe what you ran on your Desire and what you run on your iPhone?

My family and I, having a cell phone shop like to test the products ourselves.

Recently we ran battery test on Desire and the iPhone 4 along with Desire HD and Desire Z, but we'll focus on the Desire because this is the thread topic

The test show, with no tinkering whatsoever and right out of the box. Here's the result.

We did three initial test (talk, music and video). We didn't do the time test but rather a sudden deathmatch (first with an empty battery loses). I am sorry for the lack of total test time of the last two test because I was not there personally, and only know the intervals between the two phones.

Talk test features calling eachother on the two phones, the test however did not include a speaker-phone test. After about approximately 5.35 hours the Desire died, the iPhone 4 soon meets in end at 7.45 hours. The winner is the iPhone 4 with 2.10 hours ahead.

Second is the music which is the same song (Depend on You by Ayumi Hamasaki) played over and over at the highest volume without the headphones. The winner is the Desire by 2.50 hours more than the iPhone 4.

The last is the video text which like the music test plays a music video (Teardrops on My Guitar by Taylor Swift) at the highest setting. The winner is the Desire by 4.45 hours ahead of the iPhone 4.

Two out of three the winner is the Desire. If anyone has any other type of test please post there results so we can compare.

I don't doubt for a moment that this is happening all the time by both humans and bots but I would argue that it is not at all one sided and therefore any positive/negative posting from one manufacture would be balanced by the postings of another.

You would be amazed at the amount of spam and dubious posts we deal with everyday behind the scenes especially from bots but most of it hardly sees the light of day.

The OP does not fit this criteria and is therefore free to post his frustrations, the thread is in the correct forum as it is regarding the Desire, he should not be flamed for using his new phone as a comparison no matter what manufacture it is or OS it runs.

And the TS only pointed out two things that he likes better than the Desire. Most undercover company worshiper/fanboy would list everything is better. He also just pointed out facts, mostly people would fit emotion into it "OMG, good thing I switched to the iPhone, this is the crappiest thing ever!" would be an example

When I didn't have my phone, I would use my family's iPhone 4 and Desire when I needed it to go out, the phone I would use depends on who was at home at the time.

The battery life of both phones, to me, seems the same as in real life I do not measure it. But I noticed that I charge the Desire later that day than the iPhone 4. Though this is inconclusive since I did not do the exact same thing with both phones. Majority of the time when I have the iPhone is playing Angry Birds so it might contribute to the battery usage.

The screen on the iPhone 4 is better, since it is AMOLED. I got the SLCD screen version of the phone not the AMOLED one. So maybe it will be of par with the iPhone 4 if it is the AMOLED version.

IMHO, I would still go with the desire because the iPhone 4 has a lot of restrictions for me.

My 2p here:

I have a Desire and I love it. My girlfriend has an iPhone 4 and she loves it. We both take off charge around 7:30am. We both use the phone about the same (Wi-Fi wherever possible, few calls, few emails, Facebook app, etc) and we both have around the same battery life (circa 60%) by the time we go to bed at 11pm

Given I'm rooted and running my own stock ROM but battery life is comparable in this instance but I'd say the iPhone is probably better depending on usage. Screen is also awesome, regardless of me having an AMOLED screen

Still, I prefer my Desire as I can do what I want with it. For those who just want a phone to work, get an iPhone - those who want to have control, get Android

Well said. I can make my Desire last 2hrs more or 2 hours less than an iPhone4 depending on what I do with it (or don't do with it).

It boils down to what the user wants, plain and simple.

I disagree, there must be at least half a dozen people with a Desire where I work (that I know of) and only one with an iPhone 4.

All the Desire owners get on fine with their phones, they are not into rooting or any of that stuff, they just use their phone, add apps as they need to, etc.

The view the Android users MUST be into rooting or tinkering is utter nonsense.

I reset my phone a few months back and since then I've only added apps I actually use. I have no problems with the phone at all.

iPhone may well "just work" but so does Android. In fact I'd argue that the more you play around with a device the more messed up it will get.

If Apple allowed users to mess about with their phones I bet they would and they'd soon be whining on forums about battery life and all the other tiring stuff I see on this forum all too often.

There is nothing wrong with Android as a platform and there's certainly nothing wrong with the Desire. One is the biggest smartphone OS out there and the other is one of the biggest selling handsets.

Where did I say you HAVE to root? I only root to tweak it but I had no issues with it on stock - I just like playing with it!! :D

When the next update comes out I'll go back to stock to see what's improved
