Just got my Droid like a week ago...

Basically I am kinda wondering 2 things.

1. Am I right in thinking if I choose to I can go into a Verizon store on the 15th and trade in my Droid for an X since I will not have had it for 30 days by then.

2. Would you trade for the X if you could?

I don't really know what I want to do, but I LOVE this phone. I barely ever use the slide out keyboard so that's not really a concern. I am really happy with the over-clocking and BB Froyo Rom....it's so fast, but I would be dumb not to at least consider an upgrade if I qualify for it and it is actually a better phone. All opinions welcome...

From my understanding of the Verizon policy, you would indeed be eligible to return the Droid and get an X. And the X is supposed to be a BEAST. I can't imagine what that phone will be capable of doing once it's rooted (heard a rumor that it already was rooted, but it's probably fake). Just be aware that you'll obviously be reponsible for paying the price difference (the X will be more money) and I believe there is a $35 restocking fee when you return your current phone.

As Rodeo stated, you have up to 30 days from ACTIVATION to return the phone. So you can play with it for 30 days, activate it, and have another 30 days to use it as a phone to decide if you want to actually keep it.

If you activated it the day you got it though, you only have 30 days from that day. And yes, you will have to pay the $35 restocking fee.

Go over to an AT&T store and just feel the Evo. The X is similar in size, and it feels too big for me at least (and I have big hands). For me, the Incredible is a much better fit (not saying its a better phone, it just suits my needs and wants better)

Money isn't a deal breaker for me, I just want to make sure I get the best phone for me.

I personally like having the physical keyboard. Not that I use it to text (speech to text rocks) but using the keyboard shortcuts to get into recovery is very helpful. Nice to have. And I'm not sure at what size a phone stops being a phone and becomes a small 3G tablet :p but the X is a monster phone. Can you get it in your pocket? The holster for it would be obtrusively big, methinks. But if size matters, go for the X. As for me, I'm Droid all the way.

IMHO the droid is a keeper for now.

Android 3.0 will need a 1GHZ CPU. The X only just meets this need, however phones coming end of year will have 2GHZ dual cores.

So, I would wait and stay with a Droid. I can clock mine up anyhow and make it hang with the "big dogs", no worries here :D.
 
The X has two advantages: Bigger screen size and more RAM. The second one plays a pretty big role in speed; everyone here's experienced the groan-inducing feeling of hitting Home and having LauncherPro have to draw up all your widgets again.

mine hasnt done that since i installed the ROM...
 
I would definitely go with the X. I don't think you pay a restock fee if you just return the Droid and then get the X as opposed to an exchange.
 
Hey I love my droid as much as the next guy but no question I would be getting the X if I were you.

Droid has two advantages over the X and thats plain android and the keyboard

The X has a lot more than that over the droid.

OK, so I went ahead and called Verizon to see what my options were just for informational purposes. Since I ordered my Droid online I would have to:

1. send my phone back to Verizon
2. Wait for them to receive my phone and update the account
3. Order the X online w/ $35 Restocking fee
4. Wait for it to get here

This to me probably makes it too much of a hassle to do.....What a complete pain, she said sometimes if you go into a store they will take it because they are easy to sell but they don't always. I am pretty happy with my 1.2 ghz Droid so I'll prolly just end of keeping it and upgrading in 2 years. I am totally fine with that if that is what happens. I just don't know if I'm willing to turn my phone in and go a week or more without a cell.

Was she right or is there some sort of loophole she didn't mention?

they will take it back at the store. They have to. Personally I would keep your droid and walk into a store on the 15th and walk out with an X. Just make sure you return it to stock with an sbf before you take it back
 
Alright, I will attempt it. I love a challenge and I pride myself on my bartering skills. I'll let you all know....although I'm not going to be disappointed either way.

Yeah, either way you have a great phone. But why not shoot for the Droid X if you can? Motorola's mucking-up will be fixed with custom ROMs from source (hopefully Cyanogen will support the Droid X), so if you can deal without a physical keyboard, try to haggle with them. ;)
 
Just personal preferences..the X is too big for my taste and I prefer plain android.

IMO the X doesn't offer enough to offset these preferences, and the Droid rooted is more than fast enough. I'll be skipping the X and Droid 2 to see what Motorola has up its sleeve towards the end of the year with Gingerbread coming soon.
 
Yeah, the Droid 2 is not even worth a glance if you already have the Droid. It's good for new customers so that they get a more refined device but otherwise, it's going to end up as pretty much the same thing. I'm more interested in Motorola's potential LTE device, and the supposed 2GHz dual-core processor toting beast they say they have in the works. I'm very interested in Moto's devices because it seems like besides the Droid X, most (all?) of their devices have a physical keyboard. Hopefully the Droid X doesn't symbolize a shift away from that because it's really hard for me to part with a physical keyboard; it's the one thing that would make me hesitate to recommend the Droid X.
