Root Kernel Question

The kernel is the engine/cpu of the ROM. When you change the kernel your just swapping engines in the ROM/car. It will not effect the ROM you backed up. When you wipe, You will wipe the kernel/engine with the ROM/car

I just tried out the iScream kernel as well, and restored my BACKside(after backing up Quattrimus with iScream and wiping/formatting), and nothing seemed different as before, and checked the kernel in BACKside, it still said i was using Bobz kernel, so all is well. each nandroid your create, backs up the ROM, Data, Kernel, and everything else, so as long as you create a nandroid backup, you can flash any compatible ROM/Kernel combo, and not worry about it screwing with your restore points.

I tried it out for a few hours this afternoon. Seemed pretty zippy. I'm on backside now waiting for the next update. I thought about trying the kernel with it to see what happens.

Bad juju! As I understand it, they are compiled on completely different tool chains and therefore do not play nice. I know a kernel built for Slackware will fail to boot if copied to a Debian system. Jerry can use Bobz kernel because Bobz built it for CM7, which is what BACKside is based on. iScream, on the other hand, is compiled for an ICS based system. They might be compatible, but I don't think it will boot.

Well it says, "This kernel is not certified for use on any CyanogenMod 7 ROM at this time, but you are welcome to test it anyway."

I thought I might test but I also thought I would let Jerry chime in first. I'm crazy but I ain't stupid. :D

The IScream kernel is based on the Gingerkernel by drewwalton, which is based upon the source code of the Sprint Optimus S OTA update package. It doesn't work with IHO because we developed IHO based on the Stock OV kernel, which was Froyo, and tweaked it and the associated stubs etc to work with Gingerbread.

One of the only known instances of actually bricking an OV was accomplished by attempting to use the OS OTA Gingerbread update without removing the radio.

I did create a test package using the OS OTA, with the radio removed, but it is too dangerous to post publicly, even without the radio. I don't want to have any part of bricking another OV, even if the user is fully aware of the dangers. My testing convinced me at that time it was better to stick with the IHO kernels, just too much work porting the OS OTA kernel over, without much to gain.

If I still had a functioning data cable, id be more than willing to brick my old optimus V that has a cracked, non-viewable screen. :D
after all, its only use to me is as a paper weight/spare battery charger. ;)

Just a bit of add FYI:

Some ROM packages do not come with a kernel. However, all known OV ROMs do, so this is a moot point atm. However, there could be a ROM for the OV in the future that doesn't package a kernel, hence this FYI. ;)
