Root [KERNEL] ZVC Overclocked to 1.2GHz/1.3GHz *FINAL* [UPDATE 5/10]

Just did. It seems to work. Might have had the governor set too low before this morning. I'm using CPU Tuner, and the default low is 246. I set it to 300 earlier today, and it did receive the email that I sent. So maybe it wasn't the voltage, but rather the default CPU Tuner settings. I would leave it as is unless others have a problem.

Can you test it out and try sending an email to yourself while it's in sleep mode at 300? I have mine set at 300-600 and haven't seen any problems

Hey ndno, I ran v1.4 all day today and it seems solid, no problems at all. I will probably try v1.3 tomorrow. Thanks for your work on these.

Is anyone working on the CPU thing? I'm tempted to keep taking cracks at it but I haven't been able to make any progress yet. Has anyone studied the kernel log differences between plugged into AC and plugged into USB?

No luck... been trying to look at the code and nothing obvious. It seems like hooking up the USB to the PC latches something in the TWL4030 USB / Power controller (the USB ID is opened vs when hooking up to the AC adapter in which the USB ID is short); this triggers a voltage increase and somehow drives the GPU. I'm still trying to figure this out but it's pretty complicated; I emailed the engineer in Korea (his email is all over the Marquee BSP in the kernel) so hopefully I can get a response.

Can anyone confirm if the LG Optimus Black P970 has the same performance boost when hooked up to the PC via USB?

Also, someone mentioned that the WIP CM7 port (by craporman) has the performance boost, is this true? If so, then it has nothing to do with the kernel, we just need to look at the CM7 software.

It would be good to optimize the kernel if we can find an equivalent kernel that's already working out there for another similar phone/processor; we can port the same changes over and improve this kernel. I noticed there is quite a few log messages from the kernel, it's good to suppress them and reduce the unnecessary CPU usage.

they were just saying that it "appeared" to be working in cm7. However they did not take it to account that cm7 runs a newer android os that will always out bench our current version.

I will take a look at it tonight. If 3d performance doubles, then we know it works.

Thanks. Has anyone tried benchmarking the CM7 version with the USB hooked up to the PC and see if it has the performance boost?

EDIT: Nevermind, imfm, didn't see your post ;)

Yes a new os tends to be better, but at the same time the wip did not "appear" to have the performance boost, IT DID HAVE THE PERFORMANCE BOOST. These guys have done great work with our current version, but that is about the best our current version is gonna get. There has to be something in the libs that is interacting with the dsp (co-processor) that is not present in the cm7 (2.3.7).

so based on these benchmarks, which are going to be a little inaccurate because the cm7 rom is not stable yet.

Basically, overall score wise it is the same or even a little slower than marquee stock.

Performance while plugged in issue IS STILL THERE. However not due to the 3D
3D graphics are the same whether plugged in or not.

The cpu integer is the difference with cm7

Its not the dsp, its the GPU,

I'm not arguing with ya monster, only putting my two cents in. In an earlier post it was mentioned that the dsp clicks in at 800mhz when USB is plugged in and its only 200 when not, since the dsp deals with audio and video its the logical choice for the increase. I have done some research, not saying anyone's wrong but again it only seems logical, and Mister stop getting mad I'm not an enemy, I will gladly help you with anything, I'm a noob, but I can still research, and test for ya. I'm not against ya I with ya, I thank all of you developers in a lot of my post.

i wasnt arguing, i just wanted to show that cm7's performance is NOT better than what we are at right now. not in general, just saying this phone and this version of cm7.

Kool. Anyways I played blood and glory on markybeats, and ctmod, and it was playable but jumpy and slow responses to touch, on cm7 I played and it was smooth as butter no jumps, no lagginesd for touch and a clearly increase frame rate over the other roms.

Has anyone tried the omapedia site ? It has everything you ever needed to know about our chip set...

thats weird because i was getting better graphics on ct mod then cm7. we still got work to do that for sure. Anyways, lets not hijack ndno's thread. we can talk more about cm7 in one of the 2 other threads.

im taking a look at the site right now. thanks.

Hmm, well this makes it even more interesting. The main boost associated with plugging into USB is 3D performance (typically doubled). So according to your benchmark, 3D performance does not change when plugged in with CM7, but is already at its max for this iteration of the ROM. Instead, you get a minor boost in CPU performance.

No problem... in still trying to figure out how you got scores in the 800's without being plugged into USB, currently I'm on ctmod and my 3d scores are in the 400's while not plugged in that is probably the difference that you aren't seeing from my end cuz you got a CPU boost, it never worked for me.

After installing CM7, I've gotten close to 800 (3D performance) without being plugged in as well. I did some testing, and it appears that it is a kernel issue. I am currently running CTMOD with the CM7 kernel, and I am getting much better 3D performance. Unfortunately, nothing works properly, but it there is definitely something in the CM7 kernel which fixes this.

Does anyone know where's the link to the CM7 kernel used for the WIP CM7 test software? I may need to compare between the two.

Sorry, I didn't read your comment closely. I just extracted the kernel from the zip file.

its the stock kernel with a cm7 ramdisk

Wow, that means there's no change needed in the kernel to get the boost in the 3D score. So we need to look at the ramdisk or other CM7 related settings, similar to your egl.cfg mod (which by the way, I couldn't get working :().

I don't see the kernel source anywhere. According to Monster, the kernel being used is just the stock version so there's no change in the kernel to get the 3D performance boost! So it has be CM7 related and nothing to do with the kernel. Yeah, I looked at Monster's score and the 3D score is 700+, whether USB plugged in or not so the boost is always there in CM7.

Wow, this seems bizarre to me. There IS something in the ramdisk. I just built a boot.img with your overclock kernel and the CM7 ramdisk and it DOES have the 3D boost. I get a 3D graphics score of 680 in AnTuTu. Also, it does seem to hold the processor back a bit. My overall score (clocked at 1200MHz) is 2295.

Unfortunately, the CM7 ramdisk seems to cause a few other problems. My network is messed up and my MSL has changed. Also, there is a strange graphical glitch where a small black block appears in the middle of the screen, and the touchscreen becomes a little unresponsive. This might also be the main problem with CM7. Very interesting.

I'll look into this if I get a chance and if no one else figures it out yet.

hey guys im new to rooting and i wanted to know which kernal is better the hyper kernal 0.2 by blooddawn or the zvc kernal by ndno by the way thanks you guys for making these awesome kernals
