Root Lets talk lag and why it occurs

I have yet to find a really good thread anywhere that can tell me what the causes of lag are in some roms. I know Android is not hardware accelerated but that is not what I'm talking about. How many time have you read about someone saying "I'm on CM7 or some AOSP or Mik whatever and have no lag" or something to that effect? I don't know if I buy it. I have always had some lag issues but sometimes its pretty lag free, but down the road it always comes back. I'm on Decks Gingerbread with 3.3.7sbc kernel and I still have lag even when overclocked to 1.1ghz. I had lag on CM7, I had lag on Evo Classic, and Mik. Its kind of pissing me off.

Is it the amount of free memory and apps you have?
Is it the Kernel?
Is it a bad download?

Just what the hell are you guys doing to be as lag free as possible? There's no way I would go back to the 3D even if it was much smoother but the Epic Touch is so smooth and lag free stock its hard to not want it.

Honestly, there are probably hundreds of things that can cause you lag. These range from Kernel issues, ROM issues, setCPU issues, memory issues, internal memory issues, improper wiping, hardware issues, SD card issues ect, ect ,ect.

Seeing that your having it on multiple ROMS, I would check your wiping procedure first.
What EXACTLY do you do each time you flash a ROM?

Also, are you partitioned? If so, what SD card do you have? What partitions?

hi i agree with rxpert on his list and might add apps...if u have alot of apps running they r using alot of ur resources as well so when it switches from one thing to another u get lag i believe..u can always check to c what u have running and shut off and then try to c if u still have ur lag..just my 2 cents

Before I had Amon Ra I wiped everything 3 times and even ran calkulins format all. Now I use AMon Ra and format all and it still is the same. I thought maybe set cpu was to blame because I used it in all roms but since I've been on decks I have not turned it on. No difference. I am not partitioned.

Do you maybe have low memory? (too many apps, or too many apps running)

As far as being lag-free - it is definitely possible. When I'm on AOSP, no lag at all unless something is messing up (rogue app for whatever reason) or I've underclocked too much.

On sense (mik g 3.0b2) - I did get lag from time to time with sense (usually when loading widgets or something trivial like that) - but I've been using GoLauncher for a while now and it's pretty smooth. I think the only time I've gotten lag recently is when my battery is low (that's when I overclock a lot) and I was playing games ;) . Even then, it wasn't constant lag.

Hope that helps a bit. :)

Keep in Mind that the Evo 4g is now considered "ancient" hardware. Its a couple of years old and many of the new apps are made for the newer hardware which has better RAM/ROM faster buss speeds and a bit faster CPU's. With that in mind look at above post all those issues will lead to lag. Minimalistic is what you would want for the Evo to be "Snappy"

I find what works to give me the best of both worlds is that I use an AOSP ROM with Tiamat 3.3.7 Most of the apps I have are "Run as I need them" and not "Run all the time". Some ROM/KERNEL combo's don't work as well together as others. These kinds of things are YRMV.

I don't believe that our ancient hardware on the Evo has anything to do with lag. Running out of memory? Maybe

To the op, like Rxpert said, there are many things that can cause lag but one thing I highly recommend not doing is, using the Home button. I've always felt that whatever you do, when browsing, using apps, taking pictures...... it always best to back out of an application or back out of the browser instead of using the Home button. Everyone once in a while, wipe cache and dalvik cache too;)

I try to keep memory greater than 100mb, I have a lot of apps but most are on the SD card. Maybe just too many apps? I am also using GoLauncher

have you tried mikg3.0 and the tweaks he has for it? also you might want to try some of the other scripts that are out there. i have not tried this but this sound pretty cool:

Going to try the AOSP version and see what that does thanks!

Good points, gonna check and see what my apps are doing.

Hmm, good point, pressing home just keeps all that cached in memory right? I definitely use the home button a lot. But, I have wiped those caches before to speed up the phone but it does not do much. GOing to try these ideas guys thanks!
