locked bootloader??

Funny that Moto says 1GB, but everything else has 512mb.

No locked BL and basic Google would be instant buy for me.

512MB on Bionic, and count on it being a locked bootloader, which won't matter once the custom ROM teams get working you will get the custom ROM's you want.

Kinda would like some input from any D2 or DX owners out there on this: has the locked bootloader crippled the root process for you, or are you still finding yourself getting what you need out of a rooted phone?

Having a truly open sourced phone has been an amazing experience for me. It's going to take the Bionic to release before a phone on Verizon can truly be completely ahead of my rooted Droid in terms of capability.

No, the bootloader hasnt hurt root in any way. The X and D2 has root, they just cant get custom kernels.

They can still use root apps fine.

No custom ROMS then!?

No, I think you can have custom ROM's. Just no custom Kernels. Also, you are always stuck on the same version of Android as released by the manufacturer/provider. For example, if it ships with Android 2.2, you will not be able to put a 2.3 ROM on it until an update as been released.

So if you have 2.2 you can use custom 2.2 ROM's?

From my understanding, yes but not a custom kernel.

So with a locked bootloader would you be able to overclock the processor? Also with the DX or other moto phones with a locked bootloader can devs make roms that don't have bloatware?

Unfortunately, a locked bootloader does hurt sometimes. For example, some roms like cyanogenmod require their own custom kernal, so no cyanogenmod for the d2/DX crowd. I never realized how much I'd miss cm until I got my Droid x. I wont be buying another phone with a locked bootloader again.

What's so great about the cyanogenmod? I'm on AT&T so I really really want the Atrix. The Infuse and Inspire just seem to pale in comparison. Does HTC lock their bootloader?

HTC does not lock the bootloader, at least they haven't in the past.

Do believe part of the locking process was facilitated by the TI chipset design. Tegra 2 so far is easy to root, but not hampered by control freak phone carriers- yet.

When I look up info on eFuse, it points to the OMAP 3, Xenon in the Xbox 360 (knew about that way before the Droid X and 2 came out.....dont ask why I know tho...lol), and some other chips. Nothing associated with Tegra 2 yet.

I look at the Viewsonic G Tablet and have hope. If Moto does somehow find a way to lock the bootloader, they would be looked at as really anal, considering Blur is normally considered garbage compared to Sense UI, TouchWiz. Especially with Sense UI being out before Blur form the Win Mo days.

If the booloader is unlocked I'm flashing a sense ROM asap lol HTC ftw....too bad the thunderbolt is crap -___-

What's so great about the cyanogenmod?

The ability to change dropdown colors, text fonts, a reboot option... a TON of little features that I absolutely love. A lot of people prefer other ROMs, but my preference is Cyanogen. I miss all of the little features and things that other ROMs don't offer.

I can change all the things you mentioned on my Droid X running Liberty ROM 1.0...

the only things you can't do on the DX is load a fully functional 2.3 rom(which there aren't any yet) CM is working on one but its still testing. And port non moto roms like sense based roms or true aosp roms.

yeah. A locked bootloader can be a HUGE deal. No ROMs like CM or MIUI will ever be possible. Also, if/when Moto decides to stop updating your phone, your stuck on that version of android. If Moto decides 2.2 is the last version of android that the X is getting, there will not be ANY 2.3 ROMs. you absolutely NEED a 2.3 kernel to get 2.3 ROMs.
