Help low memory question ?

Buckeye Boy

My wifes Ally got down to 18.88 mb of phone storage and started getting a low memory notification and also a text full notifications. she does not have alot of apps downloaded to the phone , but when i go into manage applications, there is alot of things in there on that list, many i dont recognize? alot of them have 0kb of space taken. how do i know what they are and can i delete them?

Many of the pre-installed apps (myspace, amazon mp3, etc...) cannot be removed, unless you root the phone. Yes they take up needed space, so they really are a pain. Alot of the ones you see that are 0kb may have some importance in how your phone operates, but I'm not really sure about that.

Yeah i know about the bloatware that cannot be removed, which sucks. I just am not sure what alot of the things in there are. how would i find out if they are safe to delete?

Is your wife using the E-mail App or a lot of browser time? Both add lots of cache to your phone's internal memory and they are seemingly hidden. Consider using the HD Dolphin browser which has an option to clear cache upon exit. You can also clear cache in the settings on the stock browser.
For E-mail, empty your trash bin. Even if you delete E-mails they are just sent to the trash folder. You still have to empty the trash folder.
NOTE: The Gmail App syncs messages with the server so Gmail messages are NOT stored on your phone. So this suggestion is really for third party E-mail Apps. Even the one that came on the phone.

Get a class 6 8gb microSD, then install a custom ROM with apps to SD. That's the only way to really 'fix' this phone. "Not a lot of apps" on a box stock Ally means 'about 10'.

root ur phone with z4root or somthin(dl it online and put on your sd and install with astro) then install busybox from the market, then install titanium backup from the market as well. then use my safety list:p

i rooted my X , but i might do the wife's ALLY as well. i used z4root and bootstrapper and titanium backup before i put the Apex 1.3 rom and it works great. what is busybox? and what ROM would you suggest for this phone?

i didnt need this on my X, why here? saying i dont need bootstrap recovery? i do have titanium that i used on the X.
they bake it int many roms. for instance if you use the velocity rom you dont need to install busybox. busybox allows more commands to be executed on your phone such as delete protected apps... you can send out the command with ti backup or root explorer. if you want to go the recovery method id use clockwork mod and install the amonra recovery which comes with it. dl velocity rom and flash that. then clear cache and davilik cache and reboot and enjoy... velocity.04 is by far the most stable rom for the device(stock rom included).

QUOTE]

I can only delete one email at a time from the trash bin...
Is there a way I can select and delete ALL on them at once?

Well, I HALF figured it out.
I can "check" each individual email, then delete them as a group.
But since I never thought of deleting them until now, I have a crap load to delete.
Oddly, if you check one email, then go to options, it lets you "unselect" all...
But not the other way around. FAIL.

Any addition help on something I may have missed would be grateful.
Thanks in advance!

I have questions as well. I was sold this phone being told it was SOOO AWESOME that I could have THIS and THAT on it (meaning games and music and TONS of stuff) and now I cannot get text messages... email... or DL anything from the market.

I have read some of the stuff you are mentioning. I do not understand any of it.

I do NOT have a trash bin or a way to delete emails off my phone. You cannot delete folders as a whole or empty them etc. I get 6 text messages and then they are rejected because it says the memory is full. What is the deal!??

I have a 4 gig card and I was told this phone could handle a lot more than it really can.

How can I get stuff to save to the micro card instead of the pathetic phone memory? This is insane in my opinion to sell a phone that is supposed to handle so much and yet it cannot? I am so confused. Do the Verizon guys just not know anything they are talking about?

Please help. I am sad that I cannot use my phone. :(

Nope, It's kind of like when you go to Best Buy and the sales people "act" like they know what they are talking about. Sometimes I'm forced to go in there because it's the closest electronics store to my house and I need a part really bad. I just cringe when I hear the salesmen feeding a customer a line of BS. It's going to be the same at a Verizon store. The #1 thing that the salesman is going to care about is that 'I sold xxx number of 2 year contracts today'. It's always best to EDUCATE YOURSELF before making any type of purchase. An educated consumer, is a smart one. That way, you walk in the door and say "THIS is what I want". A salesman will NEVER recommend what is best for YOU. He's going to recommend what is best for HIS paycheck at the end of the week.

Anyways.... get yourself in the "all things root" forums and get to reading. I knew NOTHING about Android phones before I came here. With the help of these guys, I was able to turn my freebie low-end Ally into one awesome phone. It pretty much does anything my Wife's Droid 2 can do now.

EDIT: You'll have it a lot easier than I did with the simple rooting process they have out now. I had to root mine the hard way. Very intimidating for someone who had never even used an Android phone in his life. Now, it's a breeze.

Have you forgotten about my rom? http://androidforums.com/death2all1...vzc-super-fast-stable-android-2-1-themed.html My rom is just as stable. And i'm working on v0.2 now so... Just because velocity has been around longer does not mean it is better. Not saying mine is better either but i dont like seeing a bunch of biased opinions.

Sounds scary I hope I don't mess up my phone. This stuff makes me nervous :( Thank you!

If you could possibly afford to be without a phone for a week, I'd be willing to do it for you. Priority mail it to me and I'll mail it right back. I've done this soooo many times I could do it in my sleep. No charge except for Priority shipping back. But still..... go to the root section and do some reading. It is intimidating at first, but then you'll be like...... Ohhhhhhh... I get it.

The thing that kills me is that I should not have to pay to fix something I just bought. grrrr.

I am heading off to read now. I appreciate your offer Matt.. but I really cannot be without my phone for a week :(

And the one I read about ref in this email takes away Facebook (which I use for my business) and other apps that I use.

While, I can understand the trepidation with doing a root + custom ROM image, the IRC channel is really helpful, and got my phone going for me in an evening.

And, while the custom ROM removes Facebook, it's easy enough to install it from the market. And, I'm assuming your contacts are the most important thing, you can export them (As well as the calendar) to the SD card.

It's a lot scarier sounding to do than it really is :)
