Help "Low on space" phone/application storage notification

okay, let me clear that up.

my theory is that in phone memory, where the apps are stored, that no one w/ an incredible (or htc phone?, or even android phone?) has all of their 700mb of storage filled up. this is because of the memory bug on the system. apparently android only allows, like 150mb? of data to be stored for application data. (or something like that)

because of that bug, no one has even 600mb of apps. or so my theory goes.

maybe clearing out the dialer storage data will allow that data storage to clear out, idk.

i hope i'm wrong, i would love more apps on my phone. i can't stand trying to decide if i want to delete a 5mb app.

Well it sounds good but no. I've determined it has nothing to do with how many apps or even how big. When i get this warning i have uninstalled several apps 5mb in size and the message doesn't go away, i then put those apps BACK on phone then cleared data on just ONE app and the message goes away. Yahoo fantasy football was a bad one, firefox beta is HORRIBLE for data. While i agree that the 150mb might be taken from the available program data I think it is a separate partition. I've had over 240 apps on my phone at one point with everything running great. Probably down to, i don't know 190 now or so, still though one programs 5 - 10mb of 'data' can trigger that message when i know the 50 apps i've deleted surely took up more room than that.

I'm purely speculating of course but it is something definitely wrong with at least the incredible specifically

that is correct, the 150mb of data is a separate partition, and i do believe even rooted users have not found a way to make that 150mb data partition bigger, although there are apps that can monitor what takes up space there. only rooted, though.

can i ask you when you have the 240 apps, how much memory did you have or have left?

Well i just checked app brain and it seems i'm back up to 244 apps on phone with 419mb free, i have seen the available space as low as 350mb. You would be hard pressed to fill that up i believe

If I store stuff on the internal memory, the one that shows up as a drive when I connect to my computer, will that cause the 'Low Memory' issue to pop up? It shows 6.5 gb available so I was thinking of storing pictures and music there instead of my SD card which is getting filled up.

You need to do a factory reset. I had this same issue a couple of months ago. Good news is my phone has never ran better after the reset.

No. There is not problem with storing it on the internal storage condition. The Low memory warning is generally caused by a smaller system partition you can't access without root. Or it MIGHT be caused by filling the 700mb apps partition (but I haven't heard of anybody doing that on an incredible, with the aforementioned low on space issue). And if you're worried about that, as long as about 5-10% of the partition/drive is empty you should be fine.

You can store anything you'd like on Internal Storage. I have a few movies on there and would keep my music on there, but the MiUi Music App I use doesn't read from internal

At no point did he say he was having the low on space issue. And while a factory reset will "fix" the problem, it's a bit like bulldozing your house, and rebuilding whenever you need to make a repair. You can just clear cache/data, or uninstall apps, to get the same benefit.

I keep getting the infamous low space notification and can't seem to get rid of it for good.

I've moved and cleared just about everything in the "emmc" folder. Removed a few programs that I don't really use. Cleared the browser cache. Used a program to clear other types of cache.

I did read online somewhere that it was suggested to connect the phone to a pc and run a defrag on it. But Windows 7 won't let me do this.

What other option do I have besides wiping and starting from scratch? My phone is also rooted (unRevoked/Virtuous) if that helps.

I just started getting this message last week. I've read a bunch of threads on here that try to make sense of a seemingly non-sensical problem.

Here's something to add to the nonsense: I don't even use the HTC Mail application, I only use the Gmail app, but clearing the 1.98MB of data made the low space message go away.

INTERESTING...

i had to clear my sd card, so i moved all of the apps that were on there back onto my phone. i have taken up 500 some MB of space on my phone now, with about 200MB left.

VERY interesting. i know that the low space warning doesn't really have anything to do w/ the storage, but the app storage, i just never thought i'd see that much on my phone w/o getting the low space warning.

and i have NOT gotten the low space warning, too, btw.

and i'm willing to bet if i downloaded those apps instead of retransferring them back on my phone, i'd get that low space warning...

No...you wouldn't. The issue is ONLY because of apps saving data to the /data/data partition. It doesn't matter how it was installed.

i know it's /data/data partition, but there is a correlation between apps storage and that partition, right? it's not direct, but indirect.

and i'm affected by this indirect correlation, because usually i'm deleting these 5mb apps to free up space, and the warning goes away, and then i add a couple apps, and the warning comes back.

it's tough because i'm not rooted and i can't monitor this partition, but this indirect correlation is what i have to go with, you know?

QUESTION, could there be a correlation between phone storage and the internal storage and the low disk space? I know that it's a /data/data partition that causes the Low Disk Space notification, however, since I accidentally formatted all of my internal storage, the 6gb that the phone gives you, i have not had the notification.

could clearing everything out help in some way? it seems to be something to it...

We meet again my old foe

For the 5th time on my 4th DI, the message is back again. I've done everything from hard resets to clearing cache, to changing gmail settings, and everything in between.
I called VZ this morning to discuss the issue and the rep agreed that enough was enough.

After some time on the phone, she offered to send me a Samsung Fascinate.
my response, "Negative Ghost Rider."

A few minutes later she agreed to send me a Droid X.
I will truly miss my DI, I actually LOVED the phone (and really enjoyed Sense) but I'm kind of excited to have something different. Wish me luck. :)

That's awesome. Get launcher pro plus. Got an Incredible partially for Sense, but I don't even use it anymore. Does the X have weird problems like the Incredible?

Delete your mail accounts, then install K9 mail and set up your accounts there. I had that problem on my DINC every time I turned around. It has not reappeared in 14 months since I switched to K9.

question, the last time i used k9, it didn't have copy/paste in emails in my inbox. does it have that now? i tried out k9, but i found that the stock Mail app had better fuctionaility for me.

also, since i have formatted my INternal Phone STorage, (by accident) i've had that message show up (A LOT LESS FREQUENTLY), but this time, i just clear data for facebook and text messages and i'm good to go.

Yes, K-9 does have copy and paste.

Yes, K-9 does have copy and paste.

to clarify, if i get an email and i want to copy a sentence in it, i can just hold down my finger to initiate the copy/paste? before, i had to hit "reply" and copy it after i have started a reply email. gmail app also doesn't have copy/paste until you have started an email back.

i guess i can download it and try it myself. hopefully this'll get rid of teh problem for good!

In a received email you press Menu > More. In the list are various options and among them are Copy (for copying the whole message) and Select Text. Pressing the second option allows you to select whatever text and paste it into a message. To paste, you long-press on a blank line in your message and Paste comes up.

You can also copy and paste in new messages as well.

I had similar things happen. I'd go in and delete all of my old emails and purge deleted and it would be OK for awhile. I could clean up temp files for other apps and it would start working again. But, only for a few days. Switching to K9 was a permanent fix. I actually like the built in email app better than K9 but it was a small price to pay to keep the out of space from driving me over the edge. I understand that K9 has copy and paste but I have never used that feature.
