What is S-ON/OFF?
Back in the days of the OG EVO having s-off was always the goal when you rooted a phone. But with HTC locking the bootloader and a tool to unlock it, we do not need to have s-off. HTC has given us a backdoor so to speak and enabled us to leave s-on and still root the phone. So what is the difference? Well "s" is your security and having s-on means you have your securities turned on. With s-off, you will have your securities turned off so that you can set permissions to read and write on to the system partitions, think flashing or installing of roms.
"S" is like setting administrator rights on the computer.

So why should we care about getting s-off, if HTC lets us unlocks the bootloader? Well with s-on there are certain things you can and cannot flash to your phone. Radios, and kernels do not get flashed like s-off phones. There are ways to flash them, but the procedure is different. More on this later on.

Also on s-on phones the bootloader will be watermarked. This means it will say at the top of the bootlader "unlocked" which is a dead give a way of a rooted phone. However, Sprint has changed their view of rooted phones. Please read this: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/543645-sprints-policy-rooting.html. Also this is a great account that happened to an actual developer, ropodope: Spint's Policy Put to the Test. So you can see that having a watermarked bootloader is not that bad.

so in response to AHWagner i added this section above to the guide.

Meh, it's ner a bad time to root!! :p

I'm strapped for time this evening, so I'll be in and out. If you need help moving forward just post up where you are and we'll get you squared away. :)

So I successfully went through the Zedo process the other night and now I'm going for TWRP install before lazypanda. I've got the files needed from the guide and it runs, (the guide is missing a .0 on the end of the code line 'fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-jewel.img)

It goes through the process, but it fails at signature checking and gives the error 'signature verify fail'

Did you unlock your bootloader with HTCdev?

Your bootloader needs to be unlocked, either that way or by getting s-off, to install TWRP.

I'm following the instructions in the first post on this thread for LazyPanda.
According to the instructions LazyPanda does not require unlocking the bootloader with HTCdev, or at least it is not one of the steps mentioned.

Again, just going by the instructions here.
In the instructions it requests that TWRP be installed before S-Off via LazyPanda.

So I went ahead and ran LazyPanda before TWRP. Looks like it worked, shows LP and S-OFF.
It doesn't appear I can update to LP Hboot 1.12.2222 though. Renamed the file I believe to be the updated hboot to PJ75IMG.zip, but going into the bootloader doesn't automatically load it or whatever the instructions say.

Tried to run TWRP after LP. I'm not getting the 'signature fail' error anymore, but now it says failed 'partition is not allowed to be flushed'

Ok, if you're on s-off hboot 1.12.1111, there's a bug that prevents fastboot flashing from your pc.

Did you verify the md5 sum of the hboot 1.12.2222 that you have? You can do that with EStrongs File Explorer, long press the file name, scroll down to properties.

If booting in to hboot, and you see an option for fastboot, choose that.

The new hboot zip needs to be at the root of your external sd card, not within a folder.

So, in EStrongs, you'd find it under /sdcard2.

Regaw's isn't working on phones after the update.

You have to manually HTCdev unlock, install TWRP, and install a rooted rom.

Backup what you can with MyBackup Pro and SMS Backup+ if you want to save what you can first.

Ah, that makes sense now.

Please follow the link from here to get the proper hboot 1.12.2222 -

[MOD | S-OFF] Remove Red HTC Developer Splash Screen Text - Android Forums

Thank you. Installed this successfully. Updated to 1.12.2222

Went back after 1.12.2222 and installed TWRP. I'm glad that I was still able to do that since it will be very helpful.

Its official I have joined the Dark Side :D
Thanks to those that created the guide (though it is a bit confusing at this late point in the game) and everyone that helped me get squared away!

So now I want to upgrade to stock Jelly Bean with the ability to revert back easily if needed (I don't want to paint myself into a corner where I am stuck S-ON or trapped in the new firmware or whatever). I want to try stock before looking into versions with edits/removals and custom ROMS.

Now that you have permanent s-off, you really only have one rule and it's a don't care - you can only go forward with radio firmware versions (the only way you want to go anyway), not backwards.

But - you can go forwards and backwards with roms without any risk, just takes getting used to the tools. I did that. I tried JellyBean, didn't like the new stock as much as the customized ics/Sense I was using, so I went back. When I find the JellyBean I like, I'll go with that.

Welcome to the side of truth and justice where you can do what YOU want! :)

well go for it. i have as of yet updated my firmware. but i do plan to at some point. LOL

if you have questions on it....you know what to do;)

Done. Everything was smooth like budda. My firmware is so fresh and so clean.

In other news...

I noticed that, following DirtyRacun, I seem to have lost voice - I was getting email no problem, and could surf the web and listen to music, so I didn't think there was an issue, but texts and phone calls were not happening. When trying to make a call, I'd get redirected to an automated message that said something about Error 16. If any other dudes run across this, worry not, just let the message play out and you will be auto redirected to a Sprint Tech who can easily provision your phone. It doesn't matter if you're custom or stock, I didn't need to do anything on my end...just sat for 5 minutes while the tech did her thing. She only asked what device I was using - I didn't even need to explain my issue.

Anyway - if anyone else experiences the Error 16, all is not lost. I guess it might be a good practice to test text and voice following DR.

OK, I'm off to ROM-shop for the holidays.

It's all good, I wasn't aware Regaws rooter wasn't working either. He was really up to date with this stuff for a while. I didn't realize he didn't update yet. :p

If you have any issues doing HTC dev the old fashioned way, just let us know, we'll be glad to help. :)

Thanks! I'll keep you guys updated. It seems like every time I want to root, something comes up and I'm short on time. When I get to it, I'll let you know. :)

will this method get the Hotspot working despite S-ON?
yes you can use the hotspot even with s-on. but you need to be on a custom rom. most if not all custom roms will have it hacked. the stock rom will not have it. i have not seen a mod for just the sprint hotspot hack.

i completely understand this. i have like 4 roms downloaded that i want to flash, but i'm either too busy or tired to flash them. plus AF is not going any where. so let us know how it goes or if you need any help with something.

Okay, I rooted my EVO LTE. Now I'm on to trying to flash a ROM. And then I go to flashing a kernal?

You can flash them at the same time. However, there are currently no custom jellybean sense Kernels because we don't have source yet. For now just stick to stock kernels :)

(Unless you plan to flash cm10, then id recommend komodo kernel)

Nope, I don't plan on CM10. So I don't have to worry about kernels? I'm going to flash MeanBean (with S-on).

Yeah, no kernels to worry about then. Mikey should have the s-on installer baked in so you'll be good to go. Just backup up your apps via titanium, make a nandroid in case you dont like it,do a full wipe, and flash meanbean
