Root LTEVO ROOTING FOR DUMMIES {The Complete Guide}

Do as EarlyMon said. You can go back to stock ICS if you'd like. Or try other custom ROMs. I'd try ViperROM, you don't have to fastboot flash the kernel with that one, I believe.

This guide has not met this DUMMIE yet...

Trying to root before updating to Jelly Beans so I can revert back afterwords if I don't like it or can't fix some things about it. I've intentionally not taken updates for months to leave this "easy" root window open for myself.
Is Jelly Bean rooted already? Have people taken the update and then rooted and reverted back to Ice Cream Sandwich already? (I thought maybe I read something along these lines)

Windows 7 / 32Bit
Evo 4G LTE / Software Version 1.13.651.1 710RD / HBOOT 1.12
Method / Zedomax

Did I miss a step somewhere? Trying to run the 'runme.bat' from the Zedomax 'Evo4GLTERoot' folder and something is not sticking right. I updated the HTC/Android device drivers and the script runs and reboots the device but when it runs it says "adb server is out of date. killing..." , "no such file or directory". Phone reboots and starts as normal.

Do I need to have adb or part of the Android SDK installed to my PC before hand?
(Trying to avoid installing/live CD ubuntu because I have low disk space. I'm not very keen on the idea of using the HTC Unlock tool either)

I know you guys will be glad to help.
Posting this now to get the problem stated and out of the way, I will be back online late tonight (around midnight central)

I am not rooted, BUT I accepted/installed the 12/12/2012 ota update (Software version 3.15.651.16.710RD, Sense 4+, Android 4.1.1, PRI 2.87_003)) I also need a method that I can use on a MAC.

You my friend have it easy :)
You can gain s-off using lazypanda

Pyro, if you have issues with using the Zedomax version, give the all in one rooter by regaw_leinad a try. It does everything in one easy process. :)

If you want to stay the course with Zedomax, go into your computer control panel, uninstall programs and uninstall everything HTC. Then reinstall the drivers from the guide. Restart your PC, then try again.

If it still doesn't work, post back, we'll help you get it figured out. ;)

And to answer your other questions -

Yes, you can -

Root with Zedomax, then s-off with LazyPanda, then install TWRP -

or -

Unlock with HTCdev, install TWRP, and then just install a rooted JellyBean rom. You won't have s-off, so you won't be able to update your radio firmware, but you can still install roms.

If you like the first way, pm me your email address, I can get you started.

And yes, you can go back to ICS. I did. I personally think that the update was dumber than a bag of hammers and won't be suitable for me until devs get things fixed. I am also evaluating non-Sense (aka AOSP-type roms, but that's really a second choice for me because I like Sense).

My point - being rooted is well worth the initial confusion because of the options you get to satisfy YOUR needs.

And being s-off is the best way of all.

BTW, I'm seeing in regaw's xda thread that his root tool may be giving trouble with the new update.

You don't need to install the sdk to use Zedomax, the package contains everything.

Check usb drivers if it's failing.

Zedomax is good for hboot 1.12 phones running the 1.13 rom. It probably will not not work with later roms due to the exploit being closed.

In that case, you have to unlock using HTCdev first, then install TWRP, then install a rooted rom.

He actually found that there was a server hold up on his end, I _believe_ it's fixed now.

Not sure if the report on it not working with JB was the user or the program though.

ok so i added this little tidbit to the op:

Update 12/13/12: so there has been a new OTA that gives you hboot 2.09. unfortunately LazyPanda and DirtyRacun will not work with the new hboot.. You will need to use the HTCdev method found in section 2. At the moment you will not be able to get s-off with the new hboot so hopefully you did not accept it. If you did you will need to wait for s-off. All you can do now is unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery.

Yes, you'll be able to do everything an S-off phone can except flash kernels through the recovery, and flash stuff with the bootloader.

We have guides for everything, no worries! :)
Okay. So for having S-on, I will not be able to flash kernals through recover and flash things with the bootloader. All I can do is flash ROMs ..am I understanding this right? And I can't gain S-off because no one has been able to do it with the hboot I currently have, correct?

correct. please read this about kernels:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/606748-how-install-kernels-s-h-boot-1-15-a.html

with s-on, the boot.img partition does not get flashed. this is where the kernel lies. so when you flash a rom the previous boot.img will remain, unless you flash another kernel. now this will work fine with most sense roms. but going to and from aosp to sense roms is when you will run into issues.

please read the above link for more info.

Thanks for the link. I'm going to try this (rooting) out on a day I'm off from work!

So I am running h-boot 1.12, and am trying to get s-off, but every time i try to click the link the lazy panda exploit it states that it is no longer supported. It said that i have to update my h-boot to 1.15 and obtain s-off with dirty racun. Do i need to go ahead and update and then try to obtain s-off?

That's what I'd do if I were in your shoes. DirtyRacun has proven to be effective by many users. And if you need help, tons of people here have used it so I'm sure someone could help you.

yeah you have to use dirty racun now. they took down the files for lazy panda. i think i'm going to tweek the guide and adjust it for only dirty racun as suggested by team unlimited.........so expect a new version later on tonight.

unless y'all object to this or have a better suggestion

Why'd they take it down? I guess I haven't followed any of this since I got s-off.

I've still got the files

yeah they want to go with dirty racun going forward. and i do not want to post files that team unlimited does not want out into the wild like our guide is. so yeah later on i will be working on the guide.

They still maintain the PandaFinder with instructions for people who may still use LazyPanda though.

http://unlimited.io/PandaFinder.htm

So far as I recall, we agreed among ourselves to only link to their site, not directly to their files. And I have personally assured them that we honored their wishes.

I think that you can say that LazyPanda is deprecated but unless they said something recently, we can still link to the PandaFinder, no?

Am I missing something?
