Root LTEVO ROOTING FOR DUMMIES {The Complete Guide}

Yeah, everyone now goes to the DirtyRacun, not saying that we should be giving out files.

But for those re-using the old tools, or looking for them, let's at least acknowledge the past.

ok let me see what i can do with the guide. maybe start a whole new one for dirty racun. kind of what i did for the og evo, maybe?

.....nah you are right....let me see what i can do.

Maybe hide that section of the guide under tags, and label it as the old method? Rearrange so that is on the bottom and DirtyRacun is at the top?

Let me know if you need help Ocn, I'm staying in a hotel again this week. I'll probably have some time. :)

well i just finished tweaking it. i just made a notation about is all. no need to re-arrange the whole thing. check it out and let me know how you like it.

By the way - it's worth noting that many (not all) custom roms use Haus' s-on kernel installer.

In those cases, you get the boot.img installed with the rom, even though your phone is not s-off. :)

hmmmmm yeah you're right. i just started to notice this. ok i will add this in somewhere in the guide at some point. maybe we should add something to rxpert s-on kernel guide as well?

Pyro, if you have issues with using the Zedomax version, give the all in one rooter by regaw_leinad a try. It does everything in one easy process. :)

If you want to stay the course with Zedomax, go into your computer control panel, uninstall programs and uninstall everything HTC. Then reinstall the drivers from the guide. Restart your PC, then try again.

If it still doesn't work, post back, we'll help you get it figured out. ;)

Update
Thanks all for the replies. Originally I almost removed Sync before Running Zedo but decided not to shake things up too much on my decrepit computer. Uninstalling HTC Sync and resetting the drivers did the trick though. Taking Sync off my computer was my next step anyway as I saw that it was being required for Lazy Panda/Dirty Racun. You helped shortcut my troubleshoot so thanks! SuperUser ability has been granted to my phone. Now to S-OFF :D

No wonder this was so confusing to me. Everytime I went to get LazyPanda there was instructions and files for Dirty Racun requiring HTC unlock tool and updating the HBOOT. Bad timing for my first root experience. :D

Meh, it's ner a bad time to root!! :p

I'm strapped for time this evening, so I'll be in and out. If you need help moving forward just post up where you are and we'll get you squared away. :)

Can HTC EVO 4G LTE with Hboot 2.00 be rooted?

hboot 2.00? the latest hboot is 2.09 which came from the latest OTA. if this is what you have, then you can only unlock your bootloader. you will need to use the HTCdev method found in section 2 of the guide.

basically you will:
1.unlock your bootloader
2.install a recovery
3.and either flash the su file to stay on stock or flash a custom rom of your choice.

Hey dudes - wanted to drop in and thank you for the excellent guide! I used it awhile back to get my root on and some needed direction.

Regarding the other chatter in the thread - I did the DirtyRacun process the other day and thought I could share some experience to help calm any other noobs out there...I know I was hesitant to jump into it myself. Thankfully I have barrels of coffee and a cool feature on my computer called "Google" that helps me reveal the answers to all life's mysteries.

Start to finish, the process took just over two hours - YMMV. I took my sweet time and even jumped into their support chat for a minute to double check on a step. For the process I used an old XP machine running 32bit Ubuntu from a LiveCD. For any Linux noobs, I'd recommend taking a few minutes before you start to find a website that has some basic command references for Terminal. I think the only ones you need to know are 1. how to open the Terminal :) 2. "sudo" 3. change directory 4. mark/select text 5. copy/paste. It's really easy. I actually found it MUCH easier than the Windows directions [dealing with drivers and the like].

I'd also recommend registering with HTCDev and downloading all of the files before hand, to speed things up. On a slow connection, the RUU can take a minute.

The greatest confusion, for me, came after the procedure, since there is really no information regarding the "state of your device" following DirtyRacun.

Afterwards, I went into bootloader and flashed TWRP. I then booted into TWRP and flashed SuperSU. Then flashed a custom ROM...this time, without the need to flash the boot.img separate, which was nice. I did not do anything special to unlock the bootloader after the DirtyRacun process and have since flashed ROMs and kernels without issue.

Where might you dudes point a fellow dude who is looking for some clear instructions on updating firmwares and the like. The one nagging question for me is, now that I'm S-OFF...does it matter if I flash to stock and take an OTA? Even if my hboot is updated, that shouldn't have any effect on my S-OFF status [unless I'm misunderstanding]. My assumption is, at this point, all my device are belong to me.

Anyway - thanks again for the excellent write up!

well this is a great tidbit of info that might help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35414561&postcount=2&nocache=1

and you can get the latest firmware here:
[STOCK][OTA] 3.15.651.16 - Jellybean Firmware and Stock Rooted ROM

do not take the ota....just flash the firmware and you are good to go.

Thanks dude! I had that page bookmarked and have been keeping up with the thread - was looking for a little confirmation/validation before I jumped in. I appreciate the direction.

well go for it. i have as of yet updated my firmware. but i do plan to at some point. LOL

if you have questions on it....you know what to do;)

How quickly does a developer release an S-Off method when a new HBoot is released?

that is hard to say. it will depend on several things. one is how locked down the bootloader is. two with each ota previous exploits will get closed so it will always be harder to get s-off with each new ota. i remember for the og evo going from ecclair to foryo, it was a month or so. going from froyo to gingerbread was like 4-6 or so.......so we will see how long this latest ota will get s-off.

Gotcha. I was just wondering. I really don't want to do the HTCdev way considering it will watermark my bootloader.

well prepare to wait then, if you took the latest ota. it could be a while for s-off, but who knows. if anybody can find a way, it will be team unlimited.
