Hey dudes - wanted to drop in and thank you for the excellent guide! I used it awhile back to get my root on and some needed direction.
Regarding the other chatter in the thread - I did the DirtyRacun process the other day and thought I could share some experience to help calm any other noobs out there...I know I was hesitant to jump into it myself. Thankfully I have barrels of coffee and a cool feature on my computer called "Google" that helps me reveal the answers to all life's mysteries.
Start to finish, the process took just over two hours - YMMV. I took my sweet time and even jumped into their support chat for a minute to double check on a step. For the process I used an old XP machine running 32bit Ubuntu from a LiveCD. For any Linux noobs, I'd recommend taking a few minutes before you start to find a website that has some basic command references for Terminal. I think the only ones you need to know are 1. how to open the Terminal
2. "sudo" 3. change directory 4. mark/select text 5. copy/paste. It's really easy. I actually found it MUCH easier than the Windows directions [dealing with drivers and the like].
I'd also recommend registering with HTCDev and downloading all of the files before hand, to speed things up. On a slow connection, the RUU can take a minute.
The greatest confusion, for me, came after the procedure, since there is really no information regarding the "state of your device" following DirtyRacun.
Afterwards, I went into bootloader and flashed TWRP. I then booted into TWRP and flashed SuperSU. Then flashed a custom ROM...this time, without the need to flash the boot.img separate, which was nice. I did not do anything special to unlock the bootloader after the DirtyRacun process and have since flashed ROMs and kernels without issue.
Where might you dudes point a fellow dude who is looking for some clear instructions on updating firmwares and the like. The one nagging question for me is, now that I'm S-OFF...does it matter if I flash to stock and take an OTA? Even if my hboot is updated, that shouldn't have any effect on my S-OFF status [unless I'm misunderstanding]. My assumption is, at this point, all my device are belong to me.
Anyway - thanks again for the excellent write up!
