Root [Merit] Complete ZTE Merit Guide: Root, Flash Recovery and Install New ROM (with links)

well I checked and the stock software still boots up on my phone. So I assume it's good, any place u guys could recommend to upload it n how do u take the personal data off?

With the backup added I have about 50 MB, there must be something on the phone taking up tons of space.
One.Three is about 4.5 MB unzipped, so shouldn't the ROM be about that large on my phone as well?
I guess I may have to download the apps from google play since it's being weird about the size. I've deleted the cache and factor reset and it's still a pretty big file :-/

Yep i had the same problem updated all the stock factory apps ran out of space. I ended up delete all the stock apps gmail facebook music video maps so on.
Added link 2sd and went back to market go all the apps i deleted.
now I have about 120 apps installed with no problem.

Factory reset after the new ROM. If you have WiFi download the app Tweaker from Google Play. It does a better job at setting your APN. If not use settings to get you going then use Tweaker.

When you go to the new ROM Google will think it is a new phone. You can sync your contacts but you will have to start over with your apps.

Have you read this whole thread?

Hello everyone, I'm a recent first time android user. I purchased the zte merit 990g (net10) USA. A couple of weeks ago and all around its not a bad phone for the price, I was a little unhappy with the internal storage so I decided to root and it was the best move I could make. I would like to thank everyone for this thread it was very helpful. I have considered trying out a custom rom for the phone but am unaware if the one here will work with net10. The guide for rooting is pretty good although a couple of the commands are written wrong I figure that's why there is some confusion about how to do it. It took me a few attempts to get the commands right after the echo step but nothing too bad. I would like to make a couple of suggestions to anyone who does this, first of all after you root get superuser then titanium backup pro its well worth the money and will make cleaning up the boat ware on this phone a snap as well as intergrating updates to rom which will save a lot of space. Also for anyone who is viewing this forum in a mobile Web browser do yourself a favor and get tapatalk!!! If anyone needs the stock rom for the 990g (net10) USA I will be glad to upload it for you. I say stock well nearly stock I removed Facebook and a couple of Google apps before I made the backup image but everything worked fine so it shouldn't make a difference.

Please upload it.

Yes the ROM works for Net10 phones also but you should have WiFi first so you can download Tweaker from the Google Play Store to get your APN right. Best of all you can switch to Straighttalk & save a few bucks a month now.

Ok I will upload it this evening, please note that I didn't verify that it would reload onto my phone because I haven't changed roms yet, so somebody might want to test it. I am curious how that I could switch to straight Talk with this phone now please elaborate if you don't mind. If you have any problems with it please let me know and I will make another and re upload. Also out of curiosity what software are you guys/gals using to open the img files? And is there a post where I could learn more about has this works. Thanks a lot.

Ok everyone here it is my stock rom for the zte merit Here Note you will need 7-zip to extract it just google for it if you dont have it compression is better than winrar. The archive contains these files :

system.yaffs2.img
boot.img
nandroid.md5
recovery.img
README.txt

The MD5 for the archive is : 616ef61bff0c34ff49477c133271aaa7

Okay so, I'm feeling like an idiot and I don't know what to do. I bought a Merit just the other day, then today I decided I might want to root it. I followed the instructions, rooted it, and installed one.three and now my computer isn't detecting it? I've had the drivers installed since it was the stock options and now I plug it in and it brings up the installing driver software then "Device Driver Software was not successfully installed" Why is it not detecting it either on the phone or the computer?

The phone does nothing, the computer makes the usual "new device" sound then proceeds to say that the drivers are not installed even though they had to be for me to root in the first place, no?

edit: and yes, I've tried reinstalling the drivers.

edit 2: also if I want to revert using your rom, how do I go about that? I just know how to do it with zips now.

I'm pretty new to all this myself so I can't really help you on using my rom at the moment one of the devs will have to make a zip of it I believe. I will do some research and see if I can figure something out for ya. In the meantime I have one idea you can try... I just uploaded a file called pcsuite.7z its from an iso image on my rom it has the drivers installer program in it. Try and run the setup and see if that helps make sure your phone is plugged into usb when you run the installer you will need 7-zip to decompress it just Google for it. http://besoci.al/dnkr3 sorry I pasted the wrong link the first time stupid 4shared app ads

Thanks for all your help so far, I'm trying the installer in the 7z file. Also, for future reference, winRAR can also open 7z files.

Edit: Thank you so much it worked perfectly! Might have been a difference that I ran it as an administrator this time, I don't know but THANK YOU.

No problem happy to help. What version of the merit do you have on what carrier if you don't mind me asking? After you have used the one . three for awhile drop me a pm and let me know how it works I still haven't decided to use it just yet.

I got the Merit from straight talk, it says it's the ZTE-Z990? So far it's running better but personally I like the UI in the original better and that's why I kind of want to switch back but I haven't decided yet.

I'm on the Z990G net10 I'm told that one three will work with mine but I'm a tad leary of it I wanna know exactly what I'm doing and how to revert back before I commit to using it. I have managed to clean the stock rom up quite a bit just having root. So I have quite a bit of free space you should consider getting titanium backup pro its worth the money since your rooted. Also it shouldn't be much of a problem to flash the old ui which is just launcher2.apk on your phone instead of reverting roms just for the ui.

Uhh.. It's my second day with a droid, but I do understand using .apk files, where can I find launcher2? I had titanium backup pro but now I'll have to download again to get my backups back.

I don't know for sure how it would work but I have the launcher2.apk files that you need I am just not sure what the best way to go about getting them on your rom is. I don't know if I can create a backup with titanium and upload it for you so you can restore it to your phone?

Do you have WiFi access avaliable for your phone? I figure your APN settings are incorrect so if you have WiFi you will need to go to Google Play and download Tweaker and reset your APN settings for your carrier that should fix it at least from what I have read. But before you try that you should go to settings/wireless & network /mobile networks /disable data then re enable it.

EDIT

I Have d/l the ROM that was provided, I am extracting it and putting it into .zip format. Will post link to d/l it in a few moments

edit - cancel that, ROM will not install, aborts.

Yea it's your ROM, I'm not sure what the problem is, I checked the md5 sum, extracted the files and compressed them then into a .zip

I'm hoping that motorhead1991 may come on soon and help us sort this out. I don't really know why it wont install. In clockwork mod when I do "install zip" and continue the process it starts, then suddenly aborts. Idk.
