Root MikG 3.1 Hot Reboots - My Problem/Findings - Your Thoughts??

Yep, yep...that's why I mentioned and asked about the hardware version. I don't recall the specific issue where v0004 but yes, there was something, somewhere where v0004 worked and v0002/v0003 had problems.
I still havent had a single issue and am using the hotspot right now because comcast is down at the moment.

So late yesterday...I'm talking LATE like 1am in the morning...I added a bunch of apps and changed some settings on my at-the-time running smooth MikG 3.11 that I said up above was going good with NO reboots.

Just before 5am (yep...5am...don't ask!!) I made a nand and swapped batteries to put in a fresh 100% charged battery and went to bed. On my card I had my Titanium Backup folder with ALLLLL my crap in it but no other folders that I backed up with other settings (like Jorte's folder or ChompSMS folder). MY INTENTION during the day today was to reinstall Titanium Backup and then weed through the crap I had backed up but NEVER got around to it.

I used my phone in its "normal course"...texting, calling, installing some new apps...and I turned around FIFTEEN (15) HOURS later and had 60% of my battery left....GOOD battery life for me, ESPECIALLY for me with this MikG 3.11 lately. I must be honest, I did have 3 or 4 reboots during the ENTIRE day but nothing too bad.

I did a couple other changes, made another nand, and my battery got down to around 40 and the reboots became a bit more common...probably in the last hour or so I've had "a few" that I've noticed.

I think that the formatting of my card using my Mac HAS HELPED...since first trying the ROM back on March 3 the phone has been running ITS BEST after the Mac reformat. But then again, there are a bunch of reboots...especially, oddly, more frequently when the battery gets lower...it is as if the phone "strains" a bit with lower battery strength and causes the reboots. I'm pretty sure the phone doesn't "strain" more at 40% battery vs 80% battery but just odd circumstances...

ISSUE TO CONSIDER: Also something else I noticed...it appears that I have a BUNCH of reboots while my phone screen is ON and the phone sitting an IDLE but WITHOUT the screen locked. I've made a conscious effort to turn my screen OFF but I'm not sure if reboots can occur when the phone is locked and screen is off...can it??? I've just NEVER SEEN IT...only when my screen is ON do I look over and see the "ANDROID" boot up screen and/or feel the little "vibrate" from the reboot.

So, I'm gonna move forward and install Titanium, reinstall a bunch more apps and even some data for a few apps that I have "important" (to me) settings that I want to see if they stick and not cause reboot problems. I STILL need to update my radios and PRI so we'll see if that helps do.

IN SUMMARY...I can probably "deal with" the reboots that I have seen...they seem to be less frequent. I hope going forward they don't increase...and hope that perhaps an update of my radios and PRI must help as well.

Will report book...
What about a battery contact issue?? poor conection. I was going to say battery but u said u were swaping batterys. Are you shutting down completley when swaping batteries. How old are they Just a thought I could be way off on this.

Ok so Ive been on the phone setting things up and testing and deleteing. Running wifi 4g hbo go netflix texting web and phone at same time. screen on time 2 hours and the only problem i had was bad 4g speeds but after updating prl and profile the correct way im getting 7 to 10m per sec so its running flawless for me so far. Ive even rebooted manualy 1 time just to check it. So Ill report back again after work tomorrow if there is any changes.

Can you tell me the method you used to update your PRL and profile?

THANKS

just PRL first and Profile Second I was doing it backwards:o

Ha!...Sorry, I wasn't questioning your doing them both at the same time hinging on your use of "and"...I was actually wondering: HOW DO YOU update your PRL and profile?? Do you go to Home

Ok so a little up date I have been on MikG for 24hours with normal use and no reboots Every thing is working as it should like all Mik roms have for me in the past. I know its only been a day so ill keep updating.

I know your PRL and profile is recent updated but do you know if you're using the most recent radios?

Yes I am updated to the latest ota updates. My phone was updated by sprint when i told them not to at the sprint store. They updated everything. I had to reroot with the tacoroot but I stayed on the stock updated rom and kernel for a while because i was moving and didnt have time. To be honest the latest ota works quite well including battery life with the latest kernel. After I rooted I updated everything again because it put everything back to the froyo days.

Well, for those of you following my saga, here is where I'm at, and I'd GREATLY appreciate any suggestions going forward...

I tried as best as possible to proceed slowly with verrrrry incremental progress from the method of reformatting my card, to flashing with NO data on the card except for the ROM to flash with first testing out the card and the phone without partitioning then doing a whole reformat, partition and reflash of the ROM. I then very, very slowly installed apps only, leaving all data backups off the card, running the phone for a day or so with minimum apps, then adding more and, to be honest, also restoring some data and settings. I also, as of today, updated PRI and Profile as well as the latest radios, Wimax, PRL and NV.

Some might question why I might have played a bit with fire in restoring some data and the truth of the matter is that even from the beginning, when I had only the ROM on the phone and a freshly reformatted card, running very few apps with no data restore, I still had occasional reboots. I really, REALLY hoped that I would have been reboot-free but that never happened. So, I felt I had nothing to lose with restoring some settings...if I was risking a TOTALLY stable setup, I might have thought twice. However, I was doing a bunch of nand backups along the way and could always revert if the phone got much worse or unusable with reboots.

Now while reboots DO happen it is not (yet???) to the point where it is SO, so interfering with my use of the phone. I have noticed...my OWN opinion/observation...that the phone seems to reboot (1) when the battery gets a bit on the lower side (under 40%) and (2) when the screen is on and the PHONE IDLE. So I have consciously tried to shut the screen off and not sit there for "too long" without swiping or doing SOMETHING with the phone. Seems to help, for WHATEVER reason.

Can I live with this?? Maybe...for now I guess I can...?? Like I said above, would GREATLY appreciate any other suggestions, however, at this time, after TWELVE DAYS of trying various things, I'm spent :(

So, will probably try to flash some kernals...perhaps because of noticing that the reboots seem to be more frequent with the lower battery and/or the screen on and idle, there might be some sort of volage/power/cpu issue or something...I don't know at this point...:confused:

If I figure out anything else, I'll post but for now don't know quite what else to do. Gonna head over to theMikMik forums and put up this post and see if anyone has any thoughts over there... :(

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THEIR HELP!!

Honestly, I'd just go with Tommy's Classic at this point man. I'm all out of ideas for ya :confused:Find something that doesn't reboot for you and go with it.

i haven't updated in a while but after i updated my pri and baseband on 3.1 my reboots dropped alot down to like 3-4 during my 8-10 hour work day.

i seen a post about the express rom and been trying it out for about 2 days and haven't had any issues with the reboots (knock on wood, i shouldn't have typed that.)

THANKS!!...I hear ya, but I so SOOOOO like the Sense 2.1+stuff on MikG!! :(

I think I'm gonna stick it out a bit...my head's pretty hard and the walls in my house pretty soft :D;)

Hmmm...interesting about your reboots "dropping down." Your number is kinda where I'm at. I probably have a few more but its more a case that I look down at my phone when I'm NOT using it and roll my eyes because I notice another reboot. Rather have that than reboots while I'm playing with the phone. For some WEIRD reason like I posted previously, the reboots seem to occur when I'm doing NOTHING with the phone and it is idle...

I might take a look at that Express ROM. At least if you aren't and don't have any issues you'll confirm that it is NOT a hardware issue with your phone across the board.

On the express i can say i used the rc 1.0.0 stock rom and followed everything to the t. used the recovery and sd partion that they recommended.

i'm with you about the sense widgets and apps. i am so used to them and how they function. can't do without them for now.

Hey Scudder
Day 2 and no reboots everything working
Ive run the battery down to 8%
However I have 2 issues
1 Battery life isnt as good as i remember the 2.xx versions maybee a kernel change.
2 This one is a problem for me The 4G speed keeps getting slow untill i wipe the cashes. Then right after its great but goes down as i use it to the point i have to clear it again. 2 or 3 times a day.
Wish I had something for you on the reboots but I dont.
Good luck on figureing it out. I think im going back to Decks or Tommys classic.

THANK YOU for the update...

I had a "decent" day on 3.11...battery life was pretty good for me at 18 hours though, on 2.56, I did have days of 22+ under my "normal use." Both these hour numbers I mention are on stock kernal. So I'm with you that battery life isn't as good but I'm also gonna presume that my battery might be affected by the reboot issue I'm having.

With the cache issue, is there some sort of automated program you can use to wipe the caches?? Just thinking out loud...or do the type of wipe you need to do require a reboot and is too much of an interruption??

Well, well, well...just when I was about to "give up" for a bit I stumbled across something that I think I have CONFIRMED with regard to my ability to replicate my hot reboot situations!!

I was playing with my phone for a solid 10 or 15 minutes straight while I was watching TV...and NO reboots. I was constantly using my phone either swiping or flicking or touching...whatever I was doing, I was interacting with the phone. I have mentioned in previous posts that it appears that my reboots happen while my phone is IDLE, not being touched, not locked and screen on.

Well, I kinda zoned-out from my phone and had it in front of me while I turned my attention to the TV and noticed that my phone rebooted :( I said to myself, "I was using my phone for like 15 minutes and then it couldn't have been more than 2 minutes sitting here and I get a reboot??"

And then something hit me...."about 2 minutes"...hmmm...that "about 2 minutes" is the time that I have set for my screen time out!! After reboot I went through my phone for the only app I was familiar with that read and showed log information, System Tuner by 3C: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.pmw

I launched System Tuner and clicked the "Logs" option and started watching the logs scoll, taking SPECIFIC NOTE of the TIME that the logs started. That corresponded to the VERY LAST BUTTON I pressed on the phone. IN other words, after starting the log view, my phone was "idle" with the screen on. If my thoughts are correct, a reboot could be coming...

SURE ENOUGH within about 10 seconds of the 2-minute mark for my screen time out....WHA-BAMMO!!!...REBOOT!!!

I waited for the phone to come back. This time I CHANGED the screen timeout to 1 minute...again, a few seconds before the 1-minute mark, REBOOT!! I tried again with 30 seconds...SAME THING!! I also tried the 10-minute timeout option and though I didn't wait until 10 minutes to see what happens, the 2-minute mark and BEYOND was reached WITHOUT a reboot.

SOOOOOO, it appears that, for me, that MOST of these hot reboots can be replicated to occur just a few seconds before my screen is to time-out as set in the Display settings. I say "most" because I'm pretty sure that a few hot reboots have happened while in the middle of using an app or while the screen is off and locked. However, perhaps my thoughts with regard to the reboots prior to the screen timeout trigger related to these other reboot situations.

But HERE IS MY PROBLEM....I need someone to point me the direction of an app that will record ALL the log files so that they can be reviewed. This System Tuner app can save the log files but NOT in an automated fashion. The user my PUSH the "save" button. PROBLEM is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to click the "save" button as a point to capture the reboot log process information. I can "see" the freeze and pending reboot and the "save" button is non-responsive...and then the phone just hot reboots. When the phone boots up and I check to see if the log file has been saved, it is NOT :(

So, I know log files can be saved and looked at. Can someone point me in the direction of an app or technique to retrieve the log files so I can get them to the dev??

I'm HOPEFUL about this latest discovery!!

THANKS!!

Well forget #2 on my list I tested the 4g on decks and the stock rooted rom same results so im thinking the app i was using is unreliable or inconsistant. So im nandroiding back to mikg. I can deal with the battery life as i have a car charger so I will continue to let you know if anything changes. I think im gona flash a theme and see how that goes.

Thanks again for your updates...

I was just over at theMikMik forums and PM'd the dev with my information about replicating my reboot issues. Offered a log file to him so awaiting a response to see if my findings might have helped...

Just letting whoever is interested or following this hot reboot issue that a buddy Gamblor01 over at theMikMik forum was able to replicate what I found with my hot reboot issue where it was happening juuuust before the screen would timeout according to the Display settings.

My buddy thinks that he got a log file capture during a hot reboot!! Keeps ME from having to save a log with my port issue :D SOOOOO, he's gonna send over to the dev, aamikam, and we'll see what happens.

I'll keep you all posted...

Im 4 days now with out a single problem. If you want i can post up screen shots on my hardware and software if you want to compare. Just ask. But like i said no reboots of any kind on my Evo.
