Lol. Not at all.
Have a idea to fix something, and replace a file => SBF.
Modify some xml files => SBF.

Not only that, you gotta root (z4root never works unless I reboot). Then reinstall whatever Rom you're working on...

30 minute process at least just to try a new rom. So annoying

lower bills ftw tom!

i doubt i will look back though and say how could i have ever managed on a 1ghz single core processor, i will probably look back and say, the X was a milestone for me, since this is the device like steven i began to really and truly get into the mod scene with

Yeah i sometimes think back to my windows mobile days and flashing roms on those. those phones were so slow.

I read this thread the other day and didn't have time to post a comment then. Now it has grown even more :)

The bootloader being encrypted has no affect for me, at least not at the moment. I may become more like Steven down the line and it may make a difference then. I upgraded from the Droid to the Droid X for two reasons only: 1. bigger screen 2. faster cpu. I didn't even know a thing about rooting or modding until I found this forum after I had my X for about a year. My biggest complaint has to be the slowness of my smartphones...i.e. the Droid and the Droid X. It's kinda like getting the newest and fastest desktop computer (which I usually have to build to stay the fastest). When you first get it, it seems fast. Then over time you get use to the speed and then it seems so slow.

I am at that point with my X. One thing I noticed on my Droid was using WeatherBug Elite and other weather radar apps, the drawing of the radar maps and data was so slow. When I moved up to the X, that improved some, but it is still slow. That may partly be 3G and partly cpu speed as well. Maybe a dual core 4G phone might solve that problem for me, but unless having an unlocked bootloader can speed things up a lot faster, then it's not a high priority for me at this time. It may become one down the line, but again not now.

I have been pretty impressed with the work done on all the different roms that are out. It's hard to image what else could be done with an unlocked bootloader. Now, I am showing my ignorance, because I have never had a phone with an unlocked bootloader to know the difference.

But thanks to steven for sharing his thoughts about this subject. Gives us newer ones something to chew on :)

just as a caveat....i landed in Korea yesterday morning. Who wants an SGS 2? ....lol In fact i just saw an ad for one on the tv here in my hotel

To me someone who is not a developer or a themer, just someone who likes to try and make his phone better by what others have done, the bootloader being encrypted really has no effect on me. I am overclocked, undervolted, with a custom ROM and theme. Now when I first got my X I was happy with it out of the box, then I rooted it so I could get the leak of 2.2. Then after a few weeks added a theme, then added a ROM. I would guess if the bootloader was not encrypted I would be doing more as well, but it has not hurt me.

My bigger concern on a phone will be what is the development community going to be like. My wife got the D2G, they were not selling just the D2 anymore and there is virtually no development for it so she is stuck on just a rooted version of FroYo at this point. So if the development community is not going to support a phone with an encrypted bootloader this will be an issue to me. The Droid X has had such a huge following this has not been an issue, but since the X there has not been another Motorola phone with this much support, maybe the Bionic will have it, but it may not as well.

This.
Even if you don't care about the locked bootloader, the developer community will. Fission GB is a perfect example.

+1 :).

...and by the transitive property of who cares: this community here at AF.

Much of the enjoyment I get out of all of my Android devices is sharing the experiences with you guys.

I want a phone where there's a good developer's community and the corresponding attraction to a large, busy forum just like our DX forum has enjoyed.

When us mods and guides scanned through all of the forums here at AF a few weeks back to add/set prefixes to all of the threads, I personally encountered many forums where there were few few threads and little activity--for devices that I recognized. It was kind of a shock.

We are all very fortunate (or smart / wise enough ;)) to have chosen a phone like the DX. I want this again for my next phone.

Cheers!

Well, at the time it was really only this and the Fascinate, and that phone was just garbage at release :o

the pics i see of it for the US dont look the same as the eurpoean versions, kinda makes me wonder, the one for the us looks like the nexus s....

yes it does look very Nexus 'y'. I walked by the kiosk here yesterday with the SGS2 in it like the one Droid-Life has the video of. They just got 4G here in July which would support the rumor that Droid-Life reported on earlier in the week of a possible 4G version of the SGS2, however the 4G/LTE here in Korea is on a diff frequency band than VZW's 4G LTE.

Indeed its nice but guess what, Im moving on lol. Long story too much to type here. So mine is up on the chopping block for anyone interested. Not a cheap phone but damn its nice!

Hate to let it go but eh. Like I said I see the future and its quad core.

Plus 1 on this from me as well.

Dev support will play a big factor in my decision on my next phone. Now that i think about it i guess i have to agree that even tho a locked bootloader may not matter to me it may matter to the Dev community which will affect me. However if the build is as nice as stock GB on the DX i honestly could live with that. So i guess half of me now cares if the boot loader is locked and the other half doesn't.

Ahhh, very good point. I never really looked at it from that point of view. I guess my first experience with rooting and modding were with my X, thus I have been spoiled, due to the very large development community for the X. Just look at the post count on the main AF's page and your can see how big the X community really is compared to others. So, although I felt like having an unlocked bootloader had not affected me, I guess in hind site it really has to some extent. Just think of how much more the development community could have been for the X if it had been unlocked.

Kevmueller,
You made a very good point in your post. Finding our next great phone may depend more on the development community than the phone itself. I never had thought of it that way until I read your post. Thanks for those thoughts.

HTC has a site for developers, and Samsung may continue to send a phone to a major developer prior to release. If only their build qualities matched Motorola.

Yup yup true. Although the SGSII is a damn sweet phone. Its plastic and all but not junk plastic like HTC uses. The SGSII is a great phone so maybe Samsung will up the ante. Who knows.

But yeah, Moto build quality and radios are superior.

I was thinking the same thing look at the evo it isn't as a dead end like the X is. And IMO no disrespect to anyone but anything with GB on the X isn't really that grate. I seen the best all around from froyo with that said who is really messing with froyo roms but the guys who are sick of the issues with GB and there is no new or updates for them roms coming out. Plain and simple Motorola unless they do something to impress me all is out with them

From some reading I did awhile back if I remember right that Samsung is the leader or was the leader in the smart phone and posted the highest earning for a past couple quarters. Also tho they been making great electronics for awhile so doesn't surprise me

Perhaps I am expressing negativity, but I have to say that because of their unfulfilled promises, I will never purchase another Motorola phone for myself again. Never.

Soapbox mode on:

One order of man pants please. What unfulfilled promise?! BEFORE this phone went on sale, Motorola PROMISED a locked bootloader and have delivered. Or is the "unfulfilled promises" aimed at the arrogance of the hacker community that boldly predicted on July 14 of 2010 that they would crack the bootloader?

Where has Motorola done anything they didn't say they would? If you were expecting a "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" bootloader lock that could be cracked in a few months, that's on you.

I'm really tired of the indignant whining about the locked bootloader. Man up.

Soapbox off.

Moto responded to petition signers in such a way as to indicate that they were going to unlock.
