NC vs. Archos 70

I was simply pointing out that "as a reader" the kindle excels in only 1 area.

whereas the nook color excels in all others.

but yes, the prices are high for kids books.

as far as magazines, its not that much more (if at all) If i remember, my Car and driver was something like $12.00 for the year. Pretty normal sub price.

But you're leaving out things like price, size, viewability of the screen, battery life and weight. For what you get, the Kindle is better at all of those. I was reading on my NC sitting in front of my living room window. The blinds were drawn, but I could still see a glare on my screen. If someone tells me they are just looking for an e-reader and all they're going to do is read on it, I'm going to recommend the Kindle any day of the week. Strictly as e-readers, there just aren't enough reasons to recommend paying an extra $100 IMO.

it depends on what they read, doesn't it? mags, kids books, and the net are all better read on the nook color.

i'm not leaving out price....we're talking 'best' reader period, right? If they just read b/w text, then yes, the kindle is pretty much a no brainer. If they read more than that, it isn't so simple.

Okay...I've seen this discussion somewhere else before...

Here's how it ends... The Kindle and Original Nook are e-ink screen e-readers at comparable prices. The Nookcolor is a TFT LCD e-reader that runs a smartphone/tablet OS. The biggest synergy between the Kindle, Nook, and Nookcolor is that they are all labeled as "e-readers" by their respective manufacturers.

If the Kindle or Nook ran on the Android OS...they could have their own forum section her at AF. They don't run Android and THAT is the biggest difference.

Back on topic. This thread is about the Nookcolor and Archos70.

Thanks

i dont want to further derail, but the NC has an IPS display. the original e-ink nook does run on android 1.5 cupcake. I have one and its rooted but theres really not much more functionality you can get out of it...theres a small market where you can get another browser, calibre, some tools, a crossword game, but its really limited, which is why it doesnt have its own forum here and has been basically a project on nookdevs.com. When the color came out, it changed everything and exploded with xda developer love. E-ink does one thing and does it great: lines of text. Nothing is better for that, but thats all it excels at so its a single-purpose device. The NC is far more versatile and the fact that only about 3 months after its launch its the best selling item in B&N company history should tell you that paying customers buy in to the backlit LCD ereader.

Thanks for the corrections... I didn't realize that the original nook ran Android :o (but 1.5 barely counts :D).

The NC is basically an Android Tablet that B&N has turned into a e-reader. Rooting just removes those limitations that B&N put on the device (access to the market, ability for home screen replacements, etc.).

I was watching a video about that while on my NC but I couldn't hear the audio because of the crappy NC's speakers...so I had to grab my Archos 70 :D

The speakers on the NC do really suck. They are my only real complaint about the device. My brother bought me one of these for my birthday and I absolutely love it. It works amazing with the NC. It's compact so it's easy to carry around and really delivers some nice sound for what it is. I'm sure it won't satisfy a hardcore audiophile, but for the average guy who simply finds the speakers poor in general, it's a great add on. I used it all day yesterday while streaming video from my computer.

I just picked up the previous model of these, which work well (ok, I haven't tried them on the NC yet, but they work fine on my laptop, MP3 player and Droid Incredible. $12, and you can use the battery pack as a portable usb external battery for your phone/NC (sadly not the A70 since it doesn't charge through USB).

If you're in Best Buy, they might still have some of the old/cheap ones.

That's a nice form factor. It could potentially fit in a NC case too.

rofl!!:p

hey old man, its not the speakers that are the problem...:D

Not anymore...;)
