Root need questions answered please

OK, I am going to attempt to root my evo 4g. I have been doing a lot of reading and I'm not sure which way to go. What would be the best method to use for root and obtaining s-off? Any and all answers are welcome. Thanx in advance... The more that I read, the more I get a bit confused (it's not easy for me to get confused...) I just want to make sure I start off on the right foot... thanx.

well we have currently two guides that do really well to get you rooted. but, you need to know what your hboot is. to find out you need to power off (you might need to uncheck fastboot in settings/apps/uncheck fastboot) then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader(hboot). at the top of the screen it will say what your hboot is.

if your hboot is 2.15 or 2.16 then you need to use this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

if your hboot is 2.10 or less then you need to use this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html

please feel free to ask any questions that you have. but i recommend that you read the appropriate guide from head to tail first before attempting to root your phone.

Wow thanx ocnbrze... that was a fast reply... OK I have the link for dummies rooting. I wasn't sure if that was the latest and greatest or not. Any other advice that you have, I will take

i'm not sure which dummies guide you are referring to as they are both named that. lol. just follow the appropriate guide that matches with what your hboot is.

Thanx for all the help. I was under the impression that after root, signal would be better on the phone. Guess I was wrong.. :( What if anything can be done to help improve signal quality for both bars and 3/4g

Is there a way to make a phone connect to better or stronger towers (signal)? I have heard of people making their phones connect to other providers (say att connecting to vzw), can that be done?

For the baseband radio, I wouldn't try messing with. That is a sure fire way to brick your phone.
There are prl files you can flash to force your phone to exclusively use Verizon's 3G data. This does have a drawback, as a few members here have been booted by Sprint for using too much roam data.
I would link you the Vzw prl thread over at xda, but I'm on my phone.

OK... thanx. That would be cool when you can. I would like to learn a few more tricks to improve both my voice and data signal, that is without getting booted. There has to be a way to make it work off of better signals.

ok for stronger signal you can try this:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-tips-tricks/280082-major-solution-fix-your-slow-3g-speeds-evo4g.html

and as for verizon here you go:
[6/16]*techknowfile's* - Hack the HTC EVO - 3G w/o Sprint EVDO coverage! - xda-developers

just be forewarned that people have and will get kicked off if you roam to much on verizon. read this thread:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/337563-here-goes-nothing-trying-get-vzw.html

where exactly are you wanting to get better service? At home, Work, School, or just in town?

for home I highly recommend the Airave. It has increased my signal and i have not dropped a call missed a text or anything since I received it.

As far as town or other places you can mess with the radios however its not my recommended choice.

I just changed my prl to the Verizon one 00001. Now I'm trying to go back to the sprint prl using the prl updater on my evo and it errors saying that it can't update. What's wrong? And how can I find the list of sprint and verizon prls so I can get the newest one? I think I'm going to have to do it manually.
