Network vision & LTE rollout

Just called my sprint store, they said LTE will be launching in my area by "the 1st quarter of 2013"...

So I asked her "then it would be a good bet to check it out around may or june?",

She replied "No, like Janurary or Feb..."

She went on to act like at midnight on new years the area would be completely covered with LTE coverage....I think I will wait until spring/early summer to check it out. Looks like I can buy a phone and check the coverage..if I am not impressed with the coverage I have a 14 day return window.

it would be much easier to...
while out shopping for anything...
stop by any sprint vendor...
ask to test LTE with one of their demos..

if there is any LTE, then go for it. 14day test

I will probably do that, my biggest concern is having great service at the store, then getting home and having next to nothing.

I would get usable service at work with my sprint phone...good voice/data service. But I barely had a signal at home.

I am hoping that the LTE signal is strong.

I found some LTE near Atlanta on our christmas roadtrip... I was benchmarking with one hand and driving with the other. Most were half of this but this was the best one I got. If it works like this when they roll it out I'll be a very happy camper.

Thank you this is good info

By 4G, I think he means LTE. If you have a WiMAX device, and currently do not have "4G" - you will not be receiving it.

However, if you are curious about what locations have what.. check out www.sensorly.com

Actually back in January 2011 they probably were talking about wimax... December 2011 could have been either I suppose.

Old thread.

Speed daemon I already privately asked you this. But I am one of the few smr operators left I have a five channel system 855-860. What do you think is going to happen to us?
Are they just gonna attempt to buy the rest of us out? Any info would be appreciated. Non of the radio companies seem interesting in building new ltr radios. Thanks in advance

The first LTE tower went online here this week in Ocala,FL finally. They're installing the rest of the towers in town as fast as they can get the equipment in too so hopefully the rest are coming online soon. The company I work for is providing backhaul for them at a bunch of towers around here so I have seen the gear firsthand. Looks like we're finally getting some LTE goodness!

Btw if anyone is looking to buy some old iden equipment I know where you can get some real cheap! They're ripping it all out by the truckload. What used to take an entire room to run is being replaced by one rack. It's pretty amazing.

Cool! That would be really fun to see some of that new stuff up close before it gets locked away in a secure rack storage for years, or see some old stuff torn out before its refurbished/disposed of.

On an un-related note. Has anyone heard anything about HD Voice lately? As I've said before in this topic, I realize its roll out is inherently tied to the Network Vision rollout. However, I have been halfway expecting to hear something more about it from Sprint by now. Initial talk of HD Voice, during the Evo 4G LTE rollout, was preliminarily slated for 2012 Q4/Q1 2013 release.
Yeah I know initial plans can change and we're still in Q1, but there hasn't been a single peep about HD voice since the release of the iPhone 5 in early Sept., stating briefly that "it wouldn't receive HD Voice support."

I'd love to post pics of it but I'm pretty sure there's an NDA on me. As such I'll only be able to talk about the parts that are public knowledge.

As for HD voice, I thought you just needed 2 phones that supported it to see it in action. Honestly I had forgotten about it until you just mentioned it. I have a friend with an evo 4g lte I'll have to try it with. :)

Yeah, Don't do that! Not worth it. I wouldn't say anymore than you already have. We can all be content without any more details.

Correct, 2 HD Voice capable phones and a capable network are needed*
(its still not clear what the network requirements are - probably 4G or a very fast 3G? CDMA 1x network must be officially changed over to 1x-Advanced on Sprint's end first?).

You can try a test call with your friend, however I feel fairly confident that a software update will be needed at handset level or at tower level (Network Vision) before we can take advantage of the service (something will have to be in place to detect the needed variables and tell the phone/tower to use/transfer the narrow-band wide-band codec that HD Voice utilizes).
If you do try a test call, try to make it with both of you in your local 4G area?

I'm seeing more and more 4G around Jacksonville FL. It is a little fun watching approach the core of Jax. Unforntunately this does not seem to have translated to better building penetration for me. I'm still hopeful though.

I asked them if the coverage would get any better and one of the guys told me no. He said areas that were dead before will still probably be dead after the upgrades are complete. I have seen at least one area though that I got bars in before but data just refused to work get much better when they fired up the new antennas. I think it had a other issues though besides coverage.

My experience is that building penetration is not a problem at all with LTE. I think you just need to wait until more areas are covered in your region. I get a pretty good signal in doors on the 7th floor of an office building. I'm also in the interior of the office. My office within the office(lol) has walls all around it. So yeah it has to penetrate a lot of crap and does it pretty well.

"It isn’t just about 4G LTE, though. Sprint’s overall network vision strategy will look to drastically improve 3G service across the board, as well."

yeah.. right.. it has NOT improved 3G

my guess..

they are thinking.. one 4G LTE come online.. and they get clients to purchase LTE phones.. some traffic will migrate over to 4G.
this will reduce traffic in the 3G network. therefore, 3G speeds will improve.

NOT upgrading 3G..
they might in some areas.. or at some point it time.. in the future.

That's not exactly true either. Some 3G upgrades have come online before 4G LTE. Alcatel Lucent is notorious for working on 3G upgrades prior to completing 4G LTE in their markets. NYC being the prime example of that. The network is being rebuilt from the ground up. It obviously takes time. This clearly isn't one of those band-aid operations that other providers like to do.
