Hi everyone. Im brand new here, first post and all!

Anyway. I really really want to root my Evo but I'm a little apprehensive. I work for a railroad and I'm always on call. I live by my phone working properly. All I really want to do is to be able to use the hotspot feature for free. Not trying to change the world here. I didn't want to have to learn this OS and hack everything under the sun.

1. I want to use hotspot free
2. Really want my phone to just be the same as it is now.
3. Looking for someone to talk to in text or actually speak to to help me out.

Easiest thing is to read the Rooting for Dummies guide and follow the directions there for rooting. It doesnt take long and unless you flash a rom, it will be the same as it is now except it will be able to use wifi tether for free.
 
Hey man, its pretty simple. First place to start is to read the rooting for dummies sticky, should give you all you need to know, if not you can ask for help and we will answer :). This will give you su access and allow you to use the free hotspot or wifi tether app.

Yup, alls ya gots ta do is root(which gives you superuser access, so youll see an icon in your app launcher that looks like a droid dood with an ar-15), add the non-sprint wifi tether apk, grant it superuser access, and viola! Wait, waaa laaa not the intrument LoL (sorry, ive alrady had an entire Monster and part of a Dew lol)

LOL isnt the stock su icon an android skull and bones? What rom are you running where the icon is a droid with an ar-15?

that was my stock one... i think lol its been a while since ive seen the lil guy.... LoL it was super cool lookin tho, kinda miss that guy:) he even had one of those green tactical lenses over one of his eyes!!! sooooo so-comish

update: this is soooooo gonna bug me now.... i could swear it was on the standard rom, but i think i was using warm 2.2 for my first custom rom, could be there lol
 
what the hell? that wasnt my stock one, at least i dont think lol i havent been bacl to stock in a while. Hey when you get rooted sir please tell me what your su icon looks like lol.
 
well atleast i found a forum where you can get a response.

thx guys im still reading but im sure ill get around to rooting it eventually.
the dorm I stay in when im away from home turned off the wifi last month due to w/e bullshit reasosn they can come up with. so like yesterday i was atthe dorm for 17 hours with only the access on my phone, which is great but i also have an Ipad and a laptop id like to use.

yay for free hotspot, now lets hope your sprint 3g/4g doesnt suck where you are. If you need help just ask. we'll apparently be here goofing off.

I work for BNSF railroad. this is basically a hotel only for railroaders who are at there away terminal. the company the railroad leases the building from was providing the wifi access but they claim qwest shut it down due to someone/persons downloading copyrighted material. the consesus really is that they just dont want to pay for the service so that screws us.

i think sprint should provide their customers atleast 1 IP address for personal use since were already paying for it anyway. if the user wants more ports then pay for them. i know i know but what about our wireless laptop card business??? screw it i say :0

lol I wasnt suggesting you were in a college dorm but that would have been my only exposure to a dorm environment. No internet...is this a prison? No wait they get internet...OK well you seem like a prime candidate for free wifi tether...root away my friend.

Edit: My phone has been rooted since like day 2...cant you wired tether for free without root? Youll have to hook whatever it is via usb to your phone but...just a thought.

Just to warn you though.....most of use started out just rooting for the free wifi......now look at us! A bunch of flashing addicts :D

Yep. You can always use pdanet or easytether to wire tether your laptop if you do not want to root. Both of these apps are free but only for limited connectivity. You cannot access secure sites after the first week or something. After that they cost $10-$20 bucks.

So conclusion...just root your phone.

Cant you wire tether the internet using htc sync for free? Ive never tried but im pretty sure its an option

I think in order to do that, your phone has to have access. I don't think HTC would allow something like that if the Carrier was trying to get more money out of us for it. PDAnet works pretty good for tethering. I had it on my Hero. Only cost $14 for lifetime updates and full access.
Still have it available on my Evo but rooting was so much more fun :)

I think you could initially, but from my understanding that doesn't work anymore. I could be wrong though - wouldn't be the first time!
