Root New to rooting

It takes a little while. Patience is definitely a virtue here.

If there isn't, it will fault out but not hurt anything.

you can put some stuff onto your mac, and might want to think about getting a new sd card too, Like a class 10 15 gig or so!

Another question. In the "flash the SU" part of the guide....what exactly does this mean?

you will need the latest su(superapp) found here:
Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip just flash that in recovery and you will have a rooted stock rom:

As in, how exactly do I "flash that in recovery"? Do I just download that and put it on my SD card and restart the phone with the volume key like I did before?

Driving now. Too much information to text while driving

go into recovery select install .zip from sd card, then find the su file and select it. it should then flash it for you.

I think I'm understanding you. Essentially the same process as getting the recovery file on the phone, yes? Load that white screen with the volume keys, etc?

no flashing recovery is done thru the bootloader. flashing the su file is done in recovery. yes you will use the vol keys and the power buttons to find and make the selection.

There is an app called QuickBoot in the market, it is free.

It will help you get into recovery or the bootloader, as needed, quite easily.

Requires root, so we have to go one more step first, yeah?

Hboot, choose recovery, flash from zip file at this point.

Ok, I think you cats have it pretty well covered, I will be back to hear the celebration and say congrats. :)

Almost done!!

Maybe a good time to get on record -

Getting root is the same as getting Admin access on a PC (any kind of PC). When you go to update or install something on your Mac, and it gives you a pop-up to re-enter your password - that is granting a momentary root on your Mac to get that job done.

(Root is the name of the Admin account in any unix - Android is unix, Mac OS X is unix. We are talking 100% the same thing here, ok.)

So - on your phone - a piece of unix was taken away to prevent you from getting root access.

To put it back to the way it ought to have been, you needed the superuser app (gives the dialog) and some underlying bits that can't just be installed like an app.

To install those root bits, you needed a custom recovery - to get a custom recovery, you needed to unlock your bootloader.

~~~~~
Once you were all there - you had two choices - flash the SU (aka superuser aka root privilege stuff) that was missing over top of your existing rom - or flash a new rom with the root bits already baked in.
In other words, by flashing a new rom, you don't need to also go back and flash SU.
~~~~~

As you go along, from time to time a root app may ask for permission - just like on your Mac - but instead of entering a password, here, it knows it's you so you'll just get a dialog asking you to permit or deny the access.

~~~~~
Hope this helps.
Back to the popcorn!! :)
And I would say, a HUGE thanks to EarlyMon for his knowledge with the mac commands and thanks to Ocn for contacting him...I wouldn't know who to contact.!!
btw @ ocn, do you think we/you could add into the guide, stuff that EarlyMon posted about mac commands? Or link to it? Just thinkin. :)
I think did the first Mac root posts here, again last year, and again today.
Hope I can be called on whenever needed.
Honestly - this was the high point of my day. :)
I joined to figure out my Evo battery life, I stayed for the root community. The Evo forums are always my favorites, but, duh, seeing as we've owned four models. :D
Srsly - friendliest cats I know are always in the Evo forums.
Anybody wants to kang any of my instructions, fine by me, btw. ;)
EarlyMon, without those instructions I'd be exactly where I was when I started this process at 2:30 this afternoon. Tremendous help.
Thanks again to all of you for your help. Couldn't have done it without you. And sorry for all the questions! I swear I'm not stupid!
One final question. If I want to flash a new rom do I do the last few steps over again each time?
These:
3.go into recovery
4.make a nandroid backup
5.select wipe from the main menu and wipe dalvik cache, cache, and data
6.select flash zip from sdcard
7.find the superwipe file and select it.(optional)
8.find your rom and select it.
9.reboot.
Ok 2 questions. I'm noticing some lag on the menus and such on my phone. Is this normal and how do I fix it?
yes that will work on flashing roms.
and as far as lag, go into recovery and wipe dalvik cache and cache
By the way, I know that Titanium Backup is king of the hill - but I use MyBackup Root because I like the easy interface.
A nandroid backup is an image of your phone at a point in time. It's your rescue path.
Regular backups are just something that you do along the way, to keep current.
I am using an older keyboard and browser than what the market offered because I don't like the latest revisions of those, just one example.
