Root New User seeking help

Evo2007

Newbie
I was strongly encouraged to join this site by another user in this forum. She has tweaked her evo 4g out to the max and told me that she was unable to help me with my phone. What had happened was I accepted one ota transfer that cracked my first root. I was using unrevoked1. Afterwards, Unrevoked came up with their 3rd version with gave me back the root. I only wanted the root to use my phone's wireless tether application. However, my phone is unstable, and crashes, and I loose picture and videos probably because of someone breaking in??? I dunno. Furthermore, I've seen the battery life, camera/camcorder, and other capabilities tweak on on my friends evo...I want the same now. It has given me new life for this phone. I was going to switch to sprints Photon to use as a world phone but I want to prolong my evo as much as possible before the next huge technological jump. Please help me on how to root my evo so that I can install custom roms. I have S -on in the bootloader??? and thats why I was told she couldn't tweak my phone.

Were gonna need a little more info... Go into bootloader (power off phone, holde vol down + power till it boots) when you get to bootloader (white screen with andy on a skateboard) tell us what it says..

That is a very old and very good hboot hersion I believe. I think thats the old ENG hboot that has the fastboot commands. I have 2.10, so I've never used the ENG hboot. :o

I think you'll need to use an older version of Unrevoked. Let me do a little digging and see if I can find the correct root method for that hboot version. :)

Thanks guys :)

If you can just be patient with us we will be able to help you. Just may take a little more time.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i wish that i have good news, but there is not a working method anymore that you can use at this moment. i believe back then the rooting method was called 1-click simpleroot but the link for it over on xda is dead. the only thing i can think of is to just do the updates to your phone until you reach software 3.70 and hboot of 2.10. or another way is to update the phone using a ruu and get it to hboot 2.10 with software 3.70. so lets try this first:

1.download this file:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8709935/PC3...15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.zip

2.on your computer rename the file by deleting everything but the PC36IMG part of the name. do not add an extra zip as windows hides extensions.

3.move the file to the sd card via usb. do not put the file into any folder. it needs to be just on the card, we call it the root of the card.

4.next you will need to power off the phone then press and hold power+vol down.

5.if you have it named correctly and placed on the root of the card (no folders), hboot should find it and it will ask if you want to update. select yes.

6.if everything worked then you should have hboot 2.10. to find out when it is finished select no to reboot. this will take you back to the bootloader. look at the top of the screen.

7.if you have hboot 2.10 then you can use the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html to get you rooted with unrevoked.

i hope this works. let us know how it goes or if you have questions.

Thanks Ocn, I couldn't find any working links either. :(

I didn't want to update his phone then root because of the ENG bootloader. Guess It's necessary now. I really was suprised to see an old hboot like that with s-on, threw me for a loop. :)

0.79 isn't the ENG bootloader. 0.76 is. Unrevoked isn't dependent on HBOOT version, it's dependent on baseband (radio) version. That's what we really need to know to determine if it'll work.

Crap, ok. Thanks Cap'n, LOL. It's safe to update then root with a newer version I suppose. I got confused, very easy for me. :D

Granite, I see you guys pulled in the big guns. :D

I was asking jadeboy because I thought he had an older hboot and rooted it the old fashioned way (whatever that means), so figure he might know. He'd never heard of this hboot either.

Hopefully he will get it all sorted out and be able to unlock that phone!!

I have the ROM on my computer at home with that HBOOT version - I'll check and see what radio version is included when I get there.

Isnt that the hboot from japanese evo's? In any case, I know I have seen it mentioned somewhere before, just cant remember where....

No, it's not - it's from the regular Sprint EVO.

The Software number corresponds to this ROM: PC36IMG_Supersonic_1.47.651.1_Radio_2.05.00.06.10_release_CL195459-signed.zip

Note that the radio is 2.05.00.06.10, which, according to the unrevoked forever Wiki, is supported by unrevoked.

Wow, so the old unrevoked for froyo will still work on this hboot. I never even checked the unrevoked info, I thought that hboot version was too old to begin with, LOL. That'll learn me. :D

Thanks guys, we'll wait and see what happens from here.

Wow didn't mean to cause all this rukus here...but thanks to you all.... I'll try to iron on some of the questions I've seen here. I didn't update to froyo...at least I don't believe so. I got my evo in the first batch that sprint got. I used unrevoked 1 that cracked the first root. but my camera and my camcorder were jacked up and I thought the ota was gonna fix those bugs--i know stupid..but I only did this ONE time. the first ever OTA from sprint cracked my unrevoked1 root. After that my wireless tether didn't work until unrevoked came out with their 3rd version. Now the tether works but my performance is lacking, and unstable when I use slacker/pandora...etc. Not sure what unrevoked has been doing but I got all my stuff from their site @ unrevoked

Before I do anything to my phone I'd like a consensus on what to do...I really like my phone want to keep it for awhile.

thanks to you all, I appreciate it

yup thats my base band...I was just at that site and they have the forever version--I'm only on unrevoked 3. Would that be the best way to go? I'd like to tweak my phone out to the max

Unrevoked forever is your only option if you want permanent root and unlocked NAND. The reason you lost root initially is because unrevoked3 was only a temp root at the time. Now it automatically runs unrevoked forever too. So if you just run unrevoked3, you should be fine.

Thank you all...I didn't understand the terminology but I got unrevoked forever to work. It was quite simple. I looked at the droid incredible setup on youtube and it's identical to that for the evo. I forgot i got the clockwork and nand setup with their 3rd version. I rebooted my evo and it says S OFF YEEESSSS....now I can tweak it up. can someone help me with how to tweak my phone to the MAXXXX. :) Thank you all for your help...I got confused because I didn't keep up with the tech...btw am I supposed to update to froyo??

no need to update. if you do you could mess up your phone. all you will have to do now is flash a rom that has the latest updates cooked and you are good to go.

and as far as to the MAXXXXX that you speak of try flashing mikg3.0 and maybe the univewrsal freedom kernel as well. then get setcpu which you will then be able to overclock your phone.

Thanks, do you have a link for the latest/greatest rom? as well as the lines for the universal freedom kernel, and setcpu? I was looking to go to amon ra instead of clock work but not sure if thats really needed, I'm kinda lost on what gingerbread is.

There is so much stuff out there and i don't want it to conflict. All I know is my S-OFF is displayed but want to proceed carefully lest i brick my phone.

Long Live the EVO :)
