If you've backed up in the backup and restore option then it doesn't really matter if things go Pete Tong from now.
You can always go back and restore the phone to your last backup.
Copy the zip file for the Rom onto your SD card, reboot into recovery, select install zip from SD card, then select zip and flash away :)

well that a relief lol, what about this s-off take it thats to do with security? also any suggestions on what rom to get?

You shouldn't need to s off unless you want to delete things from the phone whilst it's running - not always a great idea but sometimes can be useful.
I'm not s off and not had a problem.

For ROMs it depends what you want.
AOSP - like Gingervillian or oxygen - Vanilla Android or as close as and are Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) to boot -Very fast but no lag/prettiness from Sense.
Sense - LeeDroid is very good, it's 2.2 Android but he's just released a Gingerbread version today which I'm using at the mo.
Miui - Alternative to AOSP vanilla ROMs - never used it so can't comment.
Avoid the HD roms as I found them laggy to the point of useless but LeeDroid 2.4 is great and so is Gingervillian if you don't want Sense.

I'm using a 1GB EXT3 format on my SDcard and the apps2sd+ versions of these ROMs.
I back up all my apps+app data with Titanium backup and my contacts, calenders etc with google.
My SMS are backed up with smsbackup+.
If you go from Sense to Vanilla or back I'd always advise a full wipe before flashing a new ROM of a different type.

That's why I keep things back up so it makes it less painful to get a new ROM up and running.

what about cyanogen or redux?
also can i still create a partition?

You need to follow SUroots guide to partitioning the SDcard in Gparted.
Depending on the size of card you have either 512mb or 1GB should be created to EXT (i'd suggest 3 as that seems to work with all ROMs.)
Don't forget to back up your SD card when messing with partitions!
I didn't lose any data but it is very possible data loss can happen.

Once you have your SD EXT3 partition then you should be good to go for flashing a new apps2sd+ ROM and you'll have just over 100MB internal memory free after the ROM has been flashed.
I've got 86 apps installed and still got nigh on 100MB free of "internal" memory for more apps.

Link in signature (red text) leads to an a2sd FAQ which includes a short guide to partitioning SD cards.

A EXT partition is a partition that only Linux can see.
Android is a Linux OS.
As far as my feeble brain understands it the apps2sd+ ROM uses a script to allow installation of apps to the EXT partition on the SDcard and treat them as internal memory.
It also means when you mount your SDcard in windows to copy files between the 2 the apps on EXT3 keep working on the phone because Windows won't see or touch an EXT partition so won't mount it and make it unavailable to the phone.

Or something like that ;)

Titanium backup will backup your apps with the settings, save games etc.
If you don't back them up you'll have to re-download them from the market and reset them all up again.
The only thing that Titanium often can't restore is widgets, you'll have to put those back on the homescreen yourself.

Here is a list of ROMs for Desire Desire Index - Everything Desire is here! [UPDATED: 14/4] [Much needed Maintainance] - xda-developers

Not sure about the Titanium issue.
Have you enabled USB debugging, allow unknown sources and downloaded the new busybox from Titanium.
If you click problems? at the bottom of the screen in titanium it may tell you what you are missing.
Also remember to allow Titanium superuser permissions

got debugging on tried to install busybox but got the error
the application failed, either because your device is not nand unlocked (which i didnt get the option of when rooting, see first post) or we were unable to remount

it worked!!! lol

what do i do now? titanium backup? apps2sd?

can i get old stuff back onto phone?
If you've backed up with Titanium you can restore Apps+data - don't restore system data!

Not sure how your ROM handles Apps to SD but did you create an EXT partition on the SDcard and then flash a apps2SD+ ROM?

i couldnt do the titanium backup and the dropbox didnt work before either

Ok well if you didn't back up anything with Titanium you won't be able to restore anything either.

I guess it's time to get downloading on the market, you might be lucky and the market have all your previously downloaded apps in my apps that you can download again.

Hmm redux. Small. Good benchmarks given the gfx optimisations still missing.

Seems fast and very small but not as quick on the homescreens as GV.

With all stripping its tiny. Got 333 for data.

Missing cmparts and theme chooser

Theme chooser is a bit meh IMHO but I did like cmparts!

I miss CMparts on this LeeDroid 3 ROM.
