Next big phone after Desire?

DesireMe

Android Expert
My G/F contract is up at the end of April and she is going to take my Desire and i get her new phone :D

With all the talk of Dual Core this, new phones that. I was just wandering what the next new big (android) phones will be around then?

- SG2 sounds good.
- Not that impressed with the new HTC range so far. Although a Desire S might be nice.

What should i be looking out for?

To be honest the line up this year has been dissapointing so far. HTC esp havent improved much on last year's line up. Desire S is nice looking phone and the specs they have are similar to original Desire difference is they have tweaked it by adding more internal storage. So for those who dont own a Desire its a must have phone! If you're a serious gamer you could check out Sony Xperia new playstation phone whcich is out next month and its going to run on 2.3 Gingerbread. It will be interesting to see what games they will add.

At the moment the Sony Ericsson Arc looks to be my next phone. Very sexy looking with a very nice screen considering its LCD. Though I have to say the Samsung Galaxy S2 looks the business too.

I've had some very solid hardware from Motorola in the past. Software's not been a strong point, and Blur sounds like a continuation of that ;)

Personally I'd want to take community software support into account, and I don't really know how big the community for motos is - though the Atrix's specs might change that anyway.

Atrix looks quite a power player, but its a Motorola...
Galaxy S2 is another cool phone, but Samsung may again mess it up performance wise, just like they did it with Galaxy S. Besides, they seem unable to decide which processor to fit in that phone for which country. Finally, the it may have a very high price tag.
LG storms the market with their Optimus 2X and Optimus 3D. LG anyone?

HTC has not had time to present their new generation dual-cores (like the rumored Pyramid). If we are luck, we should hear about these phones in Q2, otherwise in Q3. The performance of the HTC dual-cores should be comparable to Tegra 2 phones.

Atrix looks nice, but without a laptop/netbook, i think i'll be wasting/paying for a big feature i wouldn't be able to use. I've heard and read about the other phones, nothing really stands out so far.

Let's see what the next couple of months bring. I might just let her keep something like a Desire S and i keep mine, which will be up for renewal in about 6 months now (I think it was 18 months anyway!)

Desire s is basically the same as the desire. The incredible s would maybe be a better choice?

To be honest, get the Galaxy S2. That will be the best of the new gen phones, and its the one i'll probably be getting. The atrix is a good phone too.

Galaxy S2 would also be my choice, but there are a few things to watch out for:
* The phone is coming in 2 different versions: Exynos vs Tegra 2, SAMOLED vs SLCD. Be careful on which one to choose.
* Is the price acceptable? Or is Samsung trying to hit a record on how high they can charge with this phone?
* Will the phone suffer the same SW glitches as Galaxy S (lag)?
* Will Samsung (just like other manufacturers) also promise quick OS updates?

By the way, Desire S has noticeable improvements over the Desire, including the new SoC with the new Scorpion core, a twice better GPU, 50% more RAM, new Sense UI, OS v2.3, better battery life, WiFi N support and DLNA. All those advantages together add up to make Desire S a much better phone. The only thing I have to say here - Pity that HTC didn't bring this model earlier out.

It doesn't dock into an existing laptop. It has a dock that turns the phone INTO a laptop. Without the phone docked, the laptop dock is simply a laptop shaped keyboard and screen.

This feature is massive. It replaces your phone and laptop OR it replaces your phone and you gain a laptop.

Desire S is a better model, but depending on the price, its not that much better than the original, not when dual core phones are coming out next month at a comparable price.

Is the S2 coming out with different screen types too? Are they matched up to a CPU type, or could there be 4 versions (and where did you hear this?).

The S2 price hasn't been announced, that

Maybe, that's because the OS on it (Froyo) doesn't really take advantage of the dual cores.

you would still expect it to use 2.2.1 as smoothly as a single core right?
well it didnt it was a lag fest. its powerfull but realtime usage showed problems
i dont understand why they didnt wait for gingerbread. it was released after the nexus S anyway

well linux based netbook without the extras like a big storage space

its a big feature but i think its too soon, knowing motorola that webdock will cost a fortune and will be quite bare as it seems it can only do stuff that interfaces with the phone or browsing

The Atrix's dock is the second stupidest thing I've ever seen. What genius thought parking the phone behind a laptop was a smart idea. If you're not going to use the display as either a secondary display or a control surface or both, at least leave the phone accessible. Might as well use a Bluetooth keyboard and stick a giant rectangular magnifying glass where the dock's screen is.

 Motorola.

Edit: Wait, $500? It's official, they're having a laugh.

Edit the second: Or you can just do this and plug it into your TV, Bluetooth keyboard optional. Motorola apparently even provide an HDMI cable with the phone.

At this moment, the dual-core portfolio is tiny - there are 2-3 phones only available. Because the choice is very limited, Desire S remains a very good choice.

There are two different pieces of informations circling around:
1) SGS2 is coming out in 2 configurations: one with SAMOLED and the other with SLCD screens.
2) Samsung is going to use also Tegra 2 CPUs in SGS2
How these two pieces will interact with each other, is not yet clear to me (2 or 4 different configurations).

GB is only available for vanilla Android, and it takes time to update manufacturer UIs.
I think LG brought Optimus 2X out simply to be the first dual-core phone. It makes a name for them and puts back on race with their arts-rival Samsung.

I'm hoping HTC will release another set of handsets for the second half of the year as I was disappointed with their MWC range (although the Desire S isn't too bad really)

What I want from my next phone though is all the new bells & whistles:

NFC, dual core, front camera, better rear camera, more storage, gingerbread, wifi n, solid HD recording (no wobble) and probably a bigger screen than the Desire has.

Hopefully later this year all that will be standard and I hope HTC will have a phone that ticks those boxes, if not I'll be looking elsewhere.

Right now the new Galaxy looks to be the most future proof.
