Nexus 5 Pre-Release/Speculation Thread

Yeah I saw this last night. Sure is interesting. Especially since, as the article notes, the embargo is supposed to end on the 25th...just after the Google event on the 24th. Could the "no hardware" talk be part of the embargo and the media outlets with access actually do know that there will be hardware, they just can't say it?

It is a little odd that Google came out and specifically addressed the fact that this event. "will not reveal any hardware" but has not said much else of late. Why not just let the speculation run rampant?

It would certainly explain why many of the big tech sites didn't report getting the invite, for fear of violating the embargo? Because I remembered that the origin of the story was forced to take the article down.

Exactly what I thought. I actually was just looking around to see if the big ones (CNET, PC Mag, etc.) had any mentions of the event or invites. Not a whole lot of chatter there. Could definitely be related. Would certainly be a massive surprise and a way to reinvigorate the buzz after the massive hype last week and seemingly low buzz right now.

Also, good note on Geek.com having to take down the article and specifically address the point that no hardware will be announced. I'm sure Google would not care if we speculated about hardware like crazy if none was actually going to be announced. It's just more chatter about their upcoming products...so why force it to be hushed unless they want to shock people.

Many big tech sites specifically mentioned NOT getting an invite. I could see being quiet about it, but straight up lying?

I'm all for conspiracy's, but I really think the event on the 24th is nothing more than the new playstore/newsstand

Hmmm...definitely valid points. Why schedule that event for the 24th though? It seems as though Google/Nestle really put their marketing into overdrive for the past 2 weeks and then expect people not to be disappointed when they hold an event for just the Play Store? The timing just doesn't add up to me.
Why ramp up the marketing machine if the announcement/release was not soon?

Someone on XDA mentioned how they thought Google may have climaxed on their hype too soon and I responded:

People can only go so long with being hyped about a product with no proposed date yet before they just get bored of the game and buy something else. Of course, Nexus die hards are going to get the phone, but Google knows that already. So, if your main objective is to generate buzz around your product so the average smartphone buyer will become interested in it, Google did that perfectly last week. I think they could have capped it off nicely with an announcement last Friday for a release date, just to give people an idea.

Now with this week looking like it could be pretty even keel on the buzz, I don't know if the people that became interested or intrigued may hang around without knowing anything yet. Let's be honest, the buzz was created about something that "technically" does not even exist yet. To some people, that uncertainty of whether it is really going to happen soon or not can sway them away from it and the more they don't hear anything, the more likely they are to get something else.

Everyone on these forums, for the most part, is looking for just the latest news/leaks on the N5, so I hope Google doesn't take this as the temperature of interest in the phone. It's sort of like preaching to the choir.

It is somewhat strange, but I don't know if Google's marketing strategies are always the best. For what the Nexus' offer as far as low price off contract for a beastly phone, people should be jumping all over this phone, not just Nexus/Droid fans. As far as the Nexus phones go, I have only seen literally under 5 people with a Gnex and only ONE Nexus 4. I always see Moto Droids and Samsung Galaxys/Notes.

What do I know though? I'm sure Google has a decent plan.

Valid points

I think Google just screwed up with these press invites. They were unclear..."we" weren't supposed to take notice or care because its not what "we're" after. It wasn't sent out to major the major android and tech websites.

Geek.com was the only one I could find that got one, and they were very open about receiving it

They posted about it like any website would have, and only got the no hardware or announcement news when Google went into damage control

My 2cents

I know what you're saying, and it makes me think that something is up even more. If Geek.com is the only media outlet invited, should be a pretty hopping shindig right? Where are all the other invites? Silent for some reason. Could they have just seriously messed up by posting something when they really shouldn't have?

And Google has to know that everything, and I mean everything, it does right now is looked at under the finest of microscopes. So not seeing this event as a possible catalyst for speculation would be a big mistake.

Also, why go into damage control at all? If people want to think that it's going to be released then, let them right? It's just more hype/chatter/articles and web hits all talking about their super secret product. Google said nothing when people hypothesized like crazy about Oct. 14th/15th/21st because of KitKat hints.

You would think Google would send out invites before Apple's event, but the iPhone 5S is done and over with. This event is just for their tablets. A tablet won't be a daily driver. They do have an event on the 24th and a source was saying it won't hold any devices at that event. I think it's not a bad idea to go with the 28th. I think invites will be shown for tomorrow or the day after the iPad event tomorrow. Google has had an event after Apple announced the 4S I believe.

This Apple event is actually likely to show off new iPads, iPad Minis, Macbook Pros, Apple TV spec bump, new version of OS X, and maybe even their new Mac Pro with dual Fire Pros. So it will definitely have a lot to cover. More than just a tablet, that's for sure.

Just look at the comments on articles when they updated it to say no new hardware/news. People were really angry.

Now multiply that by a week of waiting, expectation, and speculation by the people who are most invested in seeing it.

They cut it off as soon as they could

Very very true. But why just Geek.com? No other place has announced an invite? They'd obviously love to put an article up about anything Google related right now just purely for the hits, let alone one about an invite to an event, hardware or not. Google may not have expected the event to be anything huge, but page views make money so anything related is huge to media sites, so why the silence from the rest?

Oooh wow, I never thought of that. Why didn't all the big Android sites get invites - Phandroid, Droid-Life, Android Central, Android Police etc... Not ONE of them got anything, just reported on Geek.com's seeming slip up. I agree with you, something is definitely up. It's possible they are all under embargo and Geek.com was the site that messed up and posted something. The article is actually completely gone now! Something is happening Thursday, and I now believe it's more than just a Play Store event.

Completely different from a phone. Reason why they have their separate events. Point is launching it after won't be a lost. Phones go head to head with phones and so on. Completely different markets.

I wish I knew. I don't think the embargo answers that though, because the major android tech websites said they did not get an invite (and were probably pretty worried about that), rather than just say no comment like any PR professional would have them say.

Artem from AP specifically said they didn't get an invite. They weren't quiet about that

Hmmmm, yeah I just don't know either. It just seems really fishy that major android sites wouldn't get an invite to an Google/Android based event. How else would Google expect to get the coverage and why host an event if no one important is listening? All of these questions!!!

They want me off of unlimited in the worst way, don't they. I wonder how many folk have left because of all this.

Hey broski, very good to see you. :)

Do you have any other available upgrades on your account that you can steal? That's about the only way to get around it anymore. Shy of the free upgrade weekend awhile back, which was accidental.

Just thinking about it and assuming the 28th is the release date, seeing as how it looks like the most realistic according to the various kitkat images referencing the number "28", the timeline now seems to make some sense.

Past 2 Weeks: Leak heaven, buzz like crazy, a lot of chatter, N5 on Play Store
Now-23rd: Relative silence
24th: Event/Announcement - Mass Hysteria ensues
25th: Embargo Ends - Mass Hysteria continues, plus a bunch of reviews, articles, and press coverage heading into the weekend
28th: Release!
31st: Halloween with KitKat :)

I see this time-line being best case scenario. Also, if it is available to order on the 28th, then the first batch could be arriving at doors on the 31st. But unfortunately best scenario is rarely what actually ends up happening.

ok.. i'm here. So, it's true that this phone won't be made for vzw, right? Sigh. I have unlimited and my gnex is getting old... they make it impossible to upgrade without losing it. This sickens me.

/vent

Now that you arrived it feels like a release thread. :) Tho im on vzw with you and don't know what I'm going to do. might hop to the 2 phablets you like. but it doenst thrill me to flash

There have been reports of other accessories shipping.

At this point with all the leaks it looks like manufacturers just ran with the dimensions

They may have been sent dummy phones so they could work off the dimensions. A lot of manufacturers do that so they can have accessories available as soon as the phones are released.
