Nexus Vs Razr

One thing to note about the lack of sd slot on the nexus, if VZW changes the data plans on these phones, the whole cloud storage is thrown out. This is what gets me about all these huge companies touting cloud storage. Where's Google, Apple, Motorola, Samsung, even Microsoft? They need to get with the phone carriers and work out this tiered data plans with them. Actually they need to stand up for their services as well.

Anyway, Something to think about when saying I can stream everything w/ the nexus. VZW could change their stance on the grandfather clause after everybody gets the new superphones.

I don't stream and don't plan on using the cloud so to me it doesnt matter if it has no sd card. Yes I would like having an sd card slot but I do not download a ton of apps or have all kinds of shows/pictures on my phones. I was hoping they would offer a 16 and a 32 gb version so I could get a 16 gb and save some money.

How much of the update cycle is driven by the manufacture vs the carrier? Will Big Red be the stick in the mud?

And will Google risk ticking off the GNex owners by reducing their update lead time?

Cycle is driven by the manufacturer. They will kick it out to Verizon and Verizon will do their thing with it. (Internal testing)

In regards to Google playing favorites that wont happen. The Nexus will always be updated first. What will be interesting is how fast Moto gets out subsequent updates after 4.0.

4.0 on the RAZR is going to be potent. Looking forward to that. I am looking forward to running GB for a few months as well. Ran it on my Droid but its quite buggy so I'm back to good old fashioned Froyo.

That's because the droid didn't really have the hardware to run gb.

For me the key differences are screen resolution and ics versus bloated/blurred.

I know they both have super amoled screens, but the 720p display on the Nexus offers 77% more pixels. That's a significant jump from qHD and might just be too good to past up. That's why I disagree that the RAZR is more more media friendly -- at least for video lovers. Sure you can store more on the RAZR, but HD video playback will offer a better experience on the Nexus.

Storage isn't an issue for me. My bet is the Nexus will be 32g, which is plenty imo. That's what I have now on my D3 and right now I have 8 movies, 5 TV episodes and 9 anime episodes all in 720p. I also have 840 songs, 853megs worth of comic books, 146 books and data associated with the game 9mm (which takes up 1.6g). I still have 3 gigs of free space left.

The fact that it comes with ICS is also a big plus. I really don't want to wait five months for it. Also, Because Nexus is a google phone, it will ALWAYS get updates and new software before any other phone. So you don't just get ICS five months before anyone else, you'll also get updates to it before anyone else and the next version of android (5.0, or whatever they choose to call it) before anyone else.

I'll take a good hard look at both these phones before I choose. All I've ever owned are Moto phones (the DX before and currently the D3), but right now, I'm leaning towards the Nexus.

Just ran across this which applies here. Early impression was that RAZR had a qHD pentile SAMOLED. PC Mag is suggesting it is a SAMOLED+ RGB display. This would make them VERY close in perceived sharpness.

Hands On With the Motorola Droid RAZR | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

Towards the bottom there is a comment it is not a world phone, but why have the slim slot? My hope is the author assumed this and expected to see a standard size sim slot. I hijacked this from the World phone thread.

FYI, LTE is the next evolution in GSM, not CDMA. All LTE phones on Verizon require a sim card now, not just the world phones. Also, to allow for seamless transitions between 3G and 4G (for data), the sim card acts as an RUID for CDMA as well, so simply removing the sim will disable the phone, not just 4g.

Good to see burnt! I hope you end up here :)

I wish i could say "the Nexus_insert negative comments here_so you should think about that" but I'd be making things up hahahahahaha

Jasaero is pretty decided as well so ill have to stick around the Nexus forums with you cats :)

I was pretty convinced all along something was up on this phones screen as a guy over on howardforums returned a Bionic after playing with a prototype RAZR an apparent Moto buddy of his had. He really made it sound like the screen was a lot nicer than Bionic in a way that made me suspect of it being pentile. So it being RGB isn't too surprising to me.

The open device aspect of Nexus is the whole deal for me though. I really want verizon to embrace that model on phones like the RAZR also. I would probably be all over the RAZR if they had.

A lot of people are blaming the PenTile aspect of the Bionic's screen for its lackluster quality. That's part of the problem. Most OLED PenTile arrangement are RGBG, whereas the Moto PenTile LCDs use RGBW to increase brightness. This reduces clarity and causes issues.

If the RAZR is using Super AMOLED, which I'm pretty sure it does, then it is PenTile RGBG, same as the original Galaxy S (and the Galaxy Nexus). This would still look leagues better than the current screens used on the Bionic/D3/X2/Atrix. So, please don't assume that just because it looks better than the Bionic that it's definitely not PenTile. I mean, McDonalds tastes better than dog poop, but that doesn't mean that McDonalds is caviar.

Not blaming it on GB at all. GB is not meant to run on the Droid.

GB would run fine on Droid if the OEM took the time to optimize it, instead of us relying on community developers to do it. Remember, our community devs have to try to do it sometimes without the availability of official drivers (lack of 720p support on the Incredible, for example).

Android actually has VERY low system requirements. An official release would run fine. Of course, certain UI skins (Sense) have higher requirements, but vanilla Android isn't too bad.

Correct but all we have is the dev community and while they did a fantastic job of getting a somewhat uasable build of GB out the door the data issue (3g) was a big problem. They made some huge inroads with it but never quite fixed it totally.

Well PC Magazine in the link above is claiming it's SAMOLED+. I wouldn't think PCMag would be given bad info. I wasn't really saying what you are suggesting so much as he was really wowed by it. Even the Bionic PenTile isn't bothering to many, but none really find it fantastically sharp I do not think, particularly for the resolution. I think most could pick up RGBG pentile at qHD also. qHD really should be close to perfectly sharp for MANY people if RGB.

Yep, realized that in the world phone thread. All good, since can use my D3 when in Europe.

Added: swype sucks on the D3

Yeppirs. I just rooted an OG for a guy that works for me a couple of weeks ago. I threw PE 6.something (the last GB build) on it, but ended up taking him back to Froyo on 4.2 - which, incidentally, I think was the best Froyo build of the bunch. Just never could work out all the kinks...

Alright, misunderstanding on my part. Thought you meant that the GB OS itself wasn't meant to run on the Droid (if Google had a more direct say, it likely would).

Official specs list it as a Super AMOLED, and Samsung isn't sourcing Super AMOLED Plus to anyone yet.

Looks like an error on PC Mag's part. They are the only source I see reporting Super AMOLED Plus. But, here's the specs straight from Moto, whom I trust a tad more than PC Mag.

i am going to see how both feel in hand and decide from there. If the nexus is to large and uncomfortable to hold I will get the razr.

Catch being, the Nexus might be a month or more later, if the Verizon statement means later, rather than earlier.

I think if the Razr turns out to be a great device, a lot of Nexus hold outs might cave.

Motocast alone will push people over the edge. Simple to use and amazing performance.

It's close, I'm not gonna lie. The screen really matters a lot to me, I guess I'm just one of those people...Resolving that possible shortcoming goes a long ways to convincing me. Now for a way to get around the BL and NFC hurdle!

I'll tell you that I'm okay with the cloud, but not crazy about it even though I'm unlimited, so the SD card here is a definite plus this way.......The cloud worries me a bit because many options NOW are free, but the opportunity to start charging is right around the corner. The other problem is that I don't have a legal right to unlimited data forever. The ole "we're all grandfathered in" could go away at a moment's notice and while I doubt it's likely, if you were tied to the cloud, you'd be screwed.

They are really pushing the RAZR. I called last week and inquired about the Nexus and they noted my account to call me when it comes available.

So just now i called and inquired about the Droid RAZR and the gentlemen told me the obvious (not ready for pre-order) and that it is 10 times better than the iPhone and I should wait LOL. I like playing ignorant to see what they say. So i said "really" and he said "I would like to sell you a phone now but trust me its going to be an excellent phone. It will be our best."

He then noticed the note about the Galaxy and mentioned it. I asked would it be 32 or 16 gb for storage and he said he couldnt disclose that and said the RAZR will be a much better phone and to just wait for it. Now we all know the RAZR and Nexus are compatable and each has its own audience but i found it really strange how he was pushing the RAZR.

Usually they will try to get you into whats available and to push it over the iPhone was bizarre. Maybe he was just an Android fan but I thhought i would share this story because I thought it was a bit odd to be told to wait.

I do wonder why verizon is so stoked on this handset. Its a great handset yes but why the excitement? We'll find out soon enough.....

Simple....The Razr is a DROID brother!

Nexus is not! Its just a Google branded phone, that happens to run on vzw's LTE network! We won't see no commercials about the GNex. However the Razr will be on Blast 24/7 when it gets released.

Say hello to the Razr...The new Marketing Darling of vzw for the rest of 2011...lol

Yup its going to be insane......i hope they can go back to their roots (no pun intended) and put together a cool marketing campaign like they did with the OG Droid. That one was awesome. I kid you not when i was in Best Buy purchasing it there was another guy buying it as well and said "dude did you see the commercials? I had to get this thing." Thats crazy good marketing.

They havent regained that sense of mystery and excitement with their Droid commercials since then (my opinion) Stealth Fighters and mysterious meteors crashing to Earth. Showing the stunned look on an old farmers face then cutting away to the coming soon screen...sheer genius. Great production value as well. They spent some bank on those things. Im curious to see how or if this release will stack up to that one. That was truly epic......hard to beat that and not sure if they will spend that kind of money again.
