Root Nooby questions

I rooted my phone around January (2011) with Unrevoked, and that's about as deep as I got in the whole rooting business. I was looking to update my phone with the firmware that is released via notifications, is this safe?

Or an alternative method for updating?

Keep in mind, I know nothing about rooting/roms

Did you install a custom recovery into your phone when you rooted? That's the first question we'll need an answer to

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
like mizzou said never accept an ota while you are rooted. it could brick your phone, unroot you (and possibly close any exploits and thus you will not be able to re-root) or put your phone in a weird state (like having s-on with a custom recovery).

all you need to do is flash a rom that has the update included. i would suggest that you try out mikg2.59. it has the ota built in plus it has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 built in and it is waaaaaaaaaay better then the stock rom. it is a stock rom in that it is not themed. plus it has the hotspot hacked and it has the bloatware removed. check it out. you can find it in the rom/kernel stocky.

Welcome to AF Rob! When you're rooted you won't be able to accept OTA's. Not only is there the possibility of you losing root and having to wait for another exploit, it can really *boink* your Evo. Not to mention that the fact you have a custom recovery (a custom recovery replaces the stock recovery when rooting using Unrevoked) will not allow you to accept OTA's.

The beautiful thing about being rooted is that you can keep your phone updated by flashing ROM's that have the updates included. Since we're starting from the ground up and you're unfamiliar with flashing, etc., I suggest you read ROOTING For Dummies + Extra's and http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/441044-flash-guide-us-all-d.html. These will help bring you up to speed. If you'd like to see which ROM's (Gingerbread) are available to you, go here.

Let us know if you need anything else!

How do I go about doing that?

Thanks!

ok download this file:MikG v2.59 - Downloads - theMikMik. you might need to sign up to download it. but mik is the best dev out there and it is free and worth it to join.

next read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. just skip the rooting procedure. there is a section on how to flash a rom also a guide on how to get everything set up to flash a rom as well.

if you still have questions please feel free to ask.

I'm on my phone but we should probably have him get ra on his phone too. Maybe someone with a keyboard can post the instructions. No sense in being on clockwork right?

+1 for RA

He should be able to read that in the rooting guide and if wont hurt to tell him we HIGHLY recommend this switch

All these instances of switching to amon ra, I would personally recommend switching to the newer amon ra style recovery. That way if he needs to restore the clockwork nandroid, he can;) Just a thought:)

Download Amon ra style recovery PC36IMG-AmonRA-3.06-gnm.zip

1Put it on the root of the sd card (NO FOLDERS)
2Rename it to PC36IMG.zip
3Boot to the bootloader(turn off phone, press volume down while then pressing the power button)
4It will ask you to update, yes (press volume up)
5It will ask if you want to reboot, no ( press volume down)
6Highlight recovery and press the power button

New recovery:D
