Help Note on creating threads

EarlyMon

The PearlyMon
OK - thanks to the new prefix codes, here's what we care about:

The new prefix codes are here! :) :)

Prefix codes replace subforums - we hope you find these better and faster.

We'll be moving existing threads into their correct prefixes as quickly as possible - meanwhile, please follow your instincts and classify your new threads just as you would if we were using the old subforum structures.

One more thing - it's just after 8 am EDT - welcome to launch day!

How-to-Enter-the-Launch-It-Challenge.jpg

Welcome lurkers, new and old 3vo owners! You've come to the right place! :)

Please do your best with the new prefix codes, ask questions about them in this thread!

(The rest of this pre-launch talk is destined for the hysterical, er... historical records.)

Hi,

With the launch well under way, prefix codes may be changed by staff - this isn't a bad thing if we do that to your thread.

For new threads - please try to check if the subject already exists - do your best, that's what we ask.

Threads that are too vague or too speculative may be locked or deleted - nothing personal, but we've found that one size fits all usually ends turning into one size that fits none.

Any new threads opening new issues, reporting new problems or asking questions - cheerfully will stay in place or get merged with similar ones.

If you cannot find a post you made, please ask us - we can find anything.

If you're confused, freely send me a PM (private message), my door's always open and I'll enjoy working with you. Same is true for our other active mods here, marctronixx and novox77. If you're not sure where something goes, please state in your post something like "mods please move." Or - just drop us a line in this thread! :)

We're a community of users helping users - cooperation on launch day and working together will make this forum fun and efficient for everyone.

Thank you,
EarlyMon

What, is this forum turning into the mob now? Some of the threads started mimic those in the EVO 4G thread. And I think your comments to some of the newer posters come off as egotistical and slight rude. I don't see any moderater in this thread that works directly for Google or Android. Changing the rules in the forum from one forum to the next doesn't make any sense.
EarlyMon is very helpful and I think he's far from rude or egotistical. I haven't been on the EVO 4G forums much, but it makes sense not to have a front page full of personal threads that all say the same things.

Thanks for openly stating your opinion.

I strive to be fair and even at all times and if in the course of becoming mega-busy trying to cover many forums at once (and all the while banning our steady supply of spammers and known trolls who have been banned before) I become so busy that my language comes off as gruff or harsh, then I sincerely apologize for not spending sufficient time to prevent that feeling from coming across. I never feel that way and that's not my intent.

I don't see any moderator here that works for Google or Android either, so I have no idea what you meant there.

It's launch day a-coming. Until admin gets the chance to fill our already-needed subforums, main forum real estate is at a premium, especially the front page.

Given that I've been active in moderating quite a few new device launches, I can assure that my actions here are neither arbitrary nor out of step with our best practices at organization. Indeed - I'm simply advertising how it's going to work.

Thanks again for your feedback.

I think EarlyMon's OP in this thread is quite clear why certain rules are imposed, and they make perfect sense to me.

@Cajunkid: if you're suggesting that EarlyMon or other mods have their own agenda within a given forum, that would be totally unfounded. A lot of the decisions we mods have to make are based on past experience. We can see a disaster before it happens; therefore you may see certain types of thread closed unceremoniously. Also, do not assume that any mod action you are able to see is made unilaterally. We work as a team and are more collaborative than you may realize.

Whoa ho ho chuuch! Mr. Mon and all the other mods are stern but fair. They run a tight ship which results in a VERY organized forum IMHO. I have yet to see a rude comment from any of them. Hell, even when I was flagged, warned, ticketed, temp banned and all that crap they were nice about it. lol

Mini-gun Mon is a very intellectual cat, read and pay attention and you will learn! That's what I be doing :D

like you said.. its a phone and nothing more.

Tomorrow it will be a lot of users coming in to ask questions that have already been asked. its going to be a busy day.. im happy to be here to assist.

Cajun i understand your stance and i applaud your enthusiasm in keeping the forum on a level playing field for all. I assure you we are all on the same team here and if anyone needs any help, they can message me as well as the other mods. :)

If people were watching the EVO 4G forum last year some of the threads mimic this forum. For example, the returning your phone thread. Some people have received their phones so why isn't that thread unlocked? Someone posted their phone as "meh" in wow factor. He maybe returning his phone. Negative reviews are bound to happen.

My Google/Android comment basically meant that some mods act like they work for Google/Android. It's like being a Monday morning quarterback when mods are just posting information they read before everyone else. I know you guys have other jobs but designing, building, and testing smartphones isn't one of them. But newbies come here and their thread gets locked and they are asked why are you posting this and that about a soon to be launched phone. It's a phone, and nothing more. People act like these threads are being sanctioned by the Google/Android Mafia. When in fact Google/Android does not endorse this website.

Just curious: you reference the Evo 4G forum last year, and you speak with the experience of a long time member/lurker. But you appear to be a relatively new member of the forums. Do I know you as someone else perhaps? I'll remind you that using multiple identities on these forums is prohibited.

Bingo! Muahahahaha :p

I agree with EarlyMon on not making dupe threads.

However just because a mod doesn't think it's the right time for a thread to be created is complete bs on locking it.

I asked a simple question yesterday because I saw so many positive reviews.

Since I'm going to be getting my phone tomorrow I wanted to know what bothered people about their phone and what was there pet peeve. I also included "suggestions" because I don't like to hear negative without giving a solution or possible work around.

This was said to be too early to post and lock immediately.

I don't see what the problem was wanting to know ALL ABOUT this phone from people who had it in their hand just because EarlyMon couldn't believe I was asking that question already.

I even said this may be a little early to be posting but please do if you run across something. Or to that nature.

\rant!

Frankly, your concerns are not terribly on target.

If and when someone returns a phone and would like to share why and get feedback then that will be welcome.

Creating a hypothetical thread for when it's going to happen is just wasting launch-day real-estate.

And for those of us watching the Evo launch and the Evo forum from say, when it was first formed, there was a lot of trolling and accompanying banning going on since before the launch.

BTW - your passive aggressive stance on accusing our mods of acting like we work for Android has been heard before. By a banned troll.

You seem rather informed and speaking as if active here for some time for someone with a recent join date.

For someone who only joined up here a few days ago you sure seem to have an awful lot of knowledge about past events.... ;)

My Google/Android comment basically meant that some mods act like they work for Google/Android.

If you've got a problem with how we do our "job" then I suggest you take it up with our "employers", the site owner or the senior admin. Until they tell us otherwise, we will continue to administer AF as they have previously instructed. Either PM them or post in the Suggestion Box & Feedback forum.

I understand your frustration and I noted by the fact that others thanked your post that that frustration is shared.

Please see this simple side of it -

  • I wasn't muzzling you
  • You wanted to start a thread that was a grab bag of pet peeves
    • I stated in both threads why those types of threads lead to chaos and open the door to trolling
  • You said it may be too early to for the thread yourself
    • Perhaps you haven't imagined the unintended side-effects for creating threads on what MIGHT happen - how big is your list? All I have to do is look at the Evo Support and Tips subforums and open threads for each subject there, saying, "Hey, if it happens, post it here! :)"
    • Please try to see what I have seen in other phone launches - that does not ever, not once ever, lead to a good thing

Please let us just create threads when their time is due.

And rather than grab bags of what's wrong, let's just be able to tell at a glance what's wrong.

Users are already concerned about rooting, the recent OTA breaking things, signal strength, call quality and download speeds - and that's not all coming up roses.

What you want - what's wrong - it was already here. With each item getting its own thread.

Fair enough. :)

I also need to add on here. I think the mods do a good job and keep us on topic and move things where they belong. I'm sure me and EarlyMon just had a misunderstanding. Keep up the good work.

Not my intention to steamroller you, but I come across that way when I'm doing multiple threads (in multiple forums) and trying to get through the moves quickly, in effort to help the greatest number.

My job is to prevent these misunderstandings, my sincere apologies for letting you (or any of lurkers) down.

PS - one of my earlier replies might look like it was to you when it wasn't. Added quote for clarity.

It's all good man. I apologize for my abruptness as well. You guys really do a great job at keeping order and providing the right info.

Have you got your phone yet? I can't member if you were getting it on release day or still contemplating coming to the EVO 3D?

A dissenter! This cannot be! Ve vill know vat you have done in ze past!

But seriously, I'd be fine with a lack of strict moderation. Why not just let the forums roll through launch day? You'll just be wasting your time locking and deleting threads.

With this helpful guideline, we hope to avoid locking and deleting threads.

And it seems you're not finding a lot of value in the organization we're trying to bring. That's ok, there's no one type of person or right answer for how the world should roll.

We're simply sensitive to the fact that that we have a whole class of user not checking in yet: Hi there! I just got this new Evo 3D! What's Android?

;)

HTC launches are the most fun! :) :) :)
