Help Offical Moment Update

I just got a call from the local repair center that they figured out how to do the update. ...and it only took 2 weeks. I've already done the do it yourself route, so I'll pass. If anyone on LI is looking to have it done, the repair center on Merrick rd in Merrick NY is available. Now I'll sit back and wait for the disaster that the 2.1 roll out should be. Considering how poor this fix was done, it should be epic.

there are three boot screens...samsung with progress bar, sprint logo, android/samsung loading screen. only the third screen changes with the CL14 update.

3rd screen - before the update, shows Android. after the update shows a glowing Samsung

Anyone in NYC have any progress with getting the update? I don't drive, so I can't go out to LI or NJ (unless it is by the train).

where in nyc? im in manhattan and just did the updates myself before they were released to the stores.

there is a great sprint repair store down by wall st and they've been really good about all my previous phone issues. they replaced my samsung flip phone 2 years ago when the screen got smashed on the subway. they also replaced one touch pro for me last year and fixed another.

ive been thinking bout asking them but havent been motivated enough to have them do the "official" update when i can do it myself...

I'm in Manhattan. I will definitely find this store; the ones on 86th and 125th didn't know what I was talking about or faked like they did it, but it didn't change to cl14 or whatever.

I have a Mac, so rooting isn't an option, as far as I know.

im not positive if there are other methods, but on a mac, ive read ppl load up windows in bootcamp. maybe a virtual machine of windows would work too? maybe you could use a friends or work computer with windows? its pretty simple following the guides and it goes quickly. i havent had any problems yet and have flashed my phone a few different times to test out different setups.

rather than hit up all the sprint repair stores, it might be best to call them up and ask if they've updated any samsung moments with the new maintenance release CL14? i usually call around to the stores before i go into any of them cuz sometimes the lines are terribly long. if i was able to do it myself, im sure one of the sprint store techs here must know how!

Following up with what joeykrim said re: updating with mac - I tried to do the Zefie update on my mac running XP in Fusion. Couldn't get it to go. I ended up having to break out an old pc (with XP).

has there been any confirmation on the official update coming OTA or downloadable to your computer? Dates if available, my Mom's getting annoyed with being in India

the CL14 update clears up the latitude showing in India issue. I was always in Africa...

Sprint claims the update can be done at any Sprint repair store.

It can be downloadble to your computer, as a do it yourself with windows XP and some simple directions, but this process is not officially sprint endorsed and is do at your own risk. Although its not sprint endorsed, it yields the same end result and has worked great for me!

Right, I understand I can put the custom kernel or whatever on, but my Mom's not so thrilled with that. I also understand the update fixes the location issues and whatnot.

My overall question was will it be available OTA at some point in the near future? It's a pretty darn big inconvenience (and overall pain in the rump) to have to drive to Rochester to get the update, when I don't go to Rochester for any reason, except to drive through on my way to and from school on Mondays. So if it's not going to be OTA, I'll have to take it to Rochester on my way to campus and get them to do the damn thing.

Why is this update such a pain to get?

Apparently Samsung is in a retro mood. The 1999 go to the service center update was so much fun that they've decided to turn the dial to 11. For 2.1, we'll have to compile our own kernel for the install which will be distributed on two 8" floppies. If you lack the equipment to read the floppy, the source code will be printed in the back section of a classic reprint of Compute! magazine. Happy typing. I've heard that they're even considering cassette or punch card stack for future updates, won't that be exciting!

Oh, and to answer your question. Sprint has hinted at an OTA version but no details exist. I wouldn't hold my breath for it. Either roll your own or bite the bullet and get thee to Rochester (call the repair center to make sure they are capable of doing the update first!)

I heard through my channels within RadioShack that the update will indeed be distributed on a cassette tape, and will require a TRS-80 with the cassette reader, and a special adapter that must be had made with parts from RadioShack's parts drawers.

Seriously though, I went to a Sprint store tonight to do the update only to find out that only REPAIR centers can do it... So I want to go the DIY way... As a fellow Pastafarian, can you tell me where to start?

I lol'd.

On a more serious note: I get a nearly consistent 22 hours of life on my phone per full (USB trickle and whatnot) charge. I text alot, make a few calls (5 or 6), browse the web, play Bebbled and Bonsai Blast, the works. Battery meter is usually accurate to some degree, although I still look at it as if it's a leprechaun doing a jig in front of me holding a box of lucky charms saying 'They're always after me Lucky Charms!

May you be touched by his noodley goodness

Maybe a hard reset. Last resort. That is wierd cause they didn't have an issue. It was the 2nd phone they had done. Though when I asked why they hadn't done the store phone they said they don't update the demo with MR. Just when 2.1 comes but he couldn't tell me anything about it. If anything else if you head towards lexington anytime soon I got mine done at the repair center near the mall on Nicholasville Rd.
I gave up trying to find a Sprint Store that could do it so I updated it my self using the tutorials in the forum.

My guess is there wont be an OTA ever for this update.. due to the lack of a recovery mode and other vital features that seem important before a phone can be updated via OTA methods..

really. i was waiting on the official ota update from sprint. i heard here on the forums that it would be available in feb. hm? if not then i have no worries updating from pc using official samsung/sprint backed software. i would prefer not to update via sprint store.

Yo

First off, thanks to everyone on the forum.
I used it these last few months to make my Moment vs. Hero decision and for other info.

For anyone looking in the Sacramento area, I had my phone updated at the Folsom store today.
They were on the ball, and it took about 30 minutes.
There were no issues whatsoever.
I backed up the apps with Astro file manager and pulled my sd card before I gave them the phone.
Astro restored all of my apps perfectly.
They even listened to my request not to back up my contacts.

I'm happy the keyboard lag is gone. The phone seems a little quicker but that could be my wishful thinking.

Thanks again!

A stock cj05 phone (original release) lacks the necessary features to unbrick the phone (aka recovery mode).. CL14 is the first offical rom for the moment to add in a recovery mode.. that way if something went wrong with the OTA you could always just go back to stock and try again... Reason i dont believe there will be a CL14 OTA update is because that would increase consumer tech support calls and/or replacement phones if the store doesnt know how to unbrick the phone (or if it is even possible to unbrick it after a botched OTA update)... Still no idea if it will be released to consumer download tho... They say eventually but who really knows until they give a timeline

Phone definitely is much faster at doing everything after using it extensively for a few days with the CL14 update. Battery life is lasting almost 24 hours for me, and that is with WIFI always on and GPS. The GPS does work much better now, and does not show me in russia on some apps any longer.

In some ways I am glad they wiped my phone, because I realized how many useless apps I had installed. I made a list of all my apps.. came up to about 73 total I had downloaed. I only got about 38 of them back on my phone.

NYC NEWS: Just took mines to the sprint store on broadway and maiden lane. They said a lot of people have been coming in the last week, so in two hours I should have an updated phone!

ah, thats the store i generally go to! let us know how it goes!

I went by my local store today and was told there was a system wide issue with the system used to install the update. They weren't sure when they would have it fixed. I'm thinking of doing it myself, it doesn't look to hard to me.

By the way, the tech told me there will be a android os update coming in mid feb...I asked if the cl14 update would be a must in order to get the android os update, and he said he was sure it would be. On a side note he said it will be android 2.0...when I said I had heard it would be 2.1, he said he hadn't heard that yet.

Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum as I just got my Moment today but I've been lurking and reading in preparation of my new phone. I just thought I'd share that my phone came with the updated CL14 software in case anyone is wondering.
