[Official Discussion] Huawei Ascend 2.1 - 2.2 Firmware Upgrade (Info updated as received!)

HI GUYS I KNOW EVERYONE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR THE UPGRADE ON OUR ASCENDS......WELL WAS ON THE INTERNET TALKING TO ONE OF THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS AND SHE SAID THAT THE 2.2 UPGRADE IS OUT AND THAT THE ONLY WAY FOR U TO GET IT IS U GO INTO UR LOCAL STORE (METRO THAT IS) AND ASK FOR THE UPGRADE FOR THE DEVICE! SHE SAID IT WAS RELEASED THE SAME DAY THAT THE TAPOUT CAME OUT! I ASKED WAS THERE A FEE AND SHE SAID YES ITS AROUND $10.00. IM NOT SAYING THAT THIS IS THE TRUTH BUT I WILL LET U GUYS KNOW IN THE MORNING OR LATER TOMORROW BECAUSE AS SOON AS I GET TIME I WILL BE AT THE MERTO STORE OWN THE ROAD FROM ME AND IF IT IS TRUE I WILL POST IT TO LET U KNOW IF SHE TOLD THE TRUTH!!!!!!!! SOOOOOOO HOPING THAT SHE WAS TELLING THE TRUTH!

GUYS JUST REMEMBER DDONT SHOOT THE MESSENGER SHOOT METRO FOR LYING TO US CONSTANTLY!!!!:D[/QUOTE

Looks like another reason for me to leave MetroPCS.
Metro seemed quite alright for me until they started bringin in smartphones. They have been really becoming a pain in the behind lately. These are the reasons:
1) Jumping the gun right from 2g to 4g leaving all of us who purchased 3g enabled phones in the dust.
2) Since I bought my Ascend the day it came out it's been replaced 4 times and they charge for warranty service.
3)My insurance deductible on a phone I paid $100 for is $80 and the deductible for the phone I paid $200 for is only $35.
4) If for some reason you don't pay your bill on time and your phone gets shut off and you pay it two weeks later, you still have to pay your plan price on the original date it is due or they'll shut it off. Yep so you're paying a full month for 2 weeks of service.

I wish there was a way to unlock my Ascend so i could use it with Cricket. I have not heard any complaints from people I know using that service. If anybody knows if this is possible can you link me in the right direction?

Hello people!!! This is my first post, however I have lurked in the shadows reading every post I can. First off I would like to thank everyone who has posted in these forums for their outstanding help and efforts. Now on to the good news. I have a very reliable source (GM Metro corporate) who states that the 2.2 upgrade will be out this month for us (within a week or so). I also found out it will be an in store upgrade(not sure of a cost...but I didnt ask). Also when we do have to go into the store for our upgrade *WE HAVE TO FLASH BACK TO STOCK* or they will not touch the phone. He told me the whole process should take about 20 minutes.... Hope this Helps. And again thank you to everyone for all the helpful info you post!!!!!!

read a bit on these here forums ;)

I am going to have to drop down to my local MPCS. I want the update... Regardless that it is going to cost 10 bucks, as long as it works, right out of the box! You know what I mean?!

Just it being 2.2 will be an improvement but after metro gets thru with it it prolly wont be much better than the stock 2.1 lol

I take it still no word on when and how the Crcket upgrade will be done. Oh well, hopefully soon and hopefully won't have to go to a Cricket corp store cuz i'm over 2hrs from the nearest one.

Goin to metro corp store today to see about 2.2. Will post if this ugrade hooplah is legit. Also someone posted that the phone must be stock to do upgrade? I'm rooted and removed bloatware but have not tried any mods yet, you think this will be ok?

well metro gets enough from me for paying my bills, and therefore i want give them nothing extra for no update, btw if alot of peoples wait it out, they can get it for free.

Your phone will have to be in stock form (not rooted). If it is not fully stock the folks over at Metro will not touch it. I assure you my info comes from a very reliable source.

Even if there is a $10-$15 charge is really that big of a deal. Serious we paid $100 for a pretty good phone, we shouldnt be complaining at all. If you want free upgrades than maybe you should buy a $400 phone. Not being rude just saying even if it is an extra $10 its still a pretty good deal-----Wouldnt you agree?? :D

i dont know about everyone else but me personally i bought the ascend instead of the blackberry because its a free os and i shouldn't have to pay for something that is meant to be free

True Android is a open source OS, as is its core base Linux. No one should have to pay their carrier for a OS update, especially when the phone should have never came out with 2.1 on it to start with. thats like going out and buying a new computer with Win98 on it.

I would say WinXP too but I know some ppl still love that old pos OS lol

Love that you're all frustrated with the idea of a $10 charge to upgrade.. I've been reading this thread daily since late february and I would easily dish out $30 by now to have that update. (edit: this being said, I've tried to put Icarus 1.1 on my phone with a mac, windows xp, as well as windows 7 and got stuck at the "searching for phone drivers" each time so I'm a little frustrated with this slow ass stock phone by now).

regardless, if they do charge you it's a basic service fee covering the time they're spending doing it for you and there will CERTAINLY be the option of doing it yourself, for free, one way or another. Save gas, time, and money? yeah.

Thing is Metro does nothing but f*ck it installing their bloatware n branding on it. Huawei is the one that compiles it for the Ascend.

For as you're custom rom install fails, its most likely you didnt do something right n not the phone ;)

I didn't blame the phone? I didn't blame anything but if you want to come watch my friend's PC computers stall at the "Searching for phone drivers.." screen for 30 minutes that's great. I can follow 1,2,3 instructions as well as anyone else who installed Icarus, but unfortunately I fall under the category of those who were unable to install it.

I taked to 2 different guys from 2 different corporate stores (Citrus heights and Roseville, ca) and they say that its an OTA update. I asked about the memory card thing and they say thats how they were going to have them do it but its an over the air now.

Have you tried to installing w/o a PC??? Its alot easier that way. The PC way is great for those who can get it to work, but it can be a PITFA to get a PC setup to do it. Trust me, I got my desktop setup to be able to create apps n push em to the phone, but my laptop goes stuppy lol.

Can you elaborate, "Have you tried to installing w/o a PC"? Installing the rom isn't where I get stuck, it's installing the necessary version of CWM (v2.5.1.8) onto the phone via a computer that I haven't been able to accomplish.

There is a known problem with executing one of the shells on a mac, so I ran into that problem on my mac and asked a friend if I could use his PC. When using the PC I didn't have a problem executing the shell. I had a problem with ["If there is any command prompt problems or the pc says waiting for device,go into control panel/sys/device manager and find android 1.0 right click and update driver."] because both his XP and Win7 machines were unable to find a driver for the phone.
