[Official Discussion] Huawei Ascend 2.1 - 2.2 Firmware Upgrade (Info updated as received!)

Just wanna leave a quick note, I love this site. I stumbled apon it while browsing for info on updating my ascend(metro). I lurked for a few days then made an account. But i must ask? When this firmware does actually come out, will it be rootable? I'm new to all this an i know this is just OFFICIAL UPDATES ONLY, so i do apologize. I just wanted to know.

Love your site, love what you guys are doing. Keep up the Good Work! :D :D

Somebody had to buy it by now :\

Even if some one did buy it, how would one go about up dating it? Is it as simple as Placing it on the sd card and booom its done? And also, does this completely bring your phone back to factory settings? Like would i lose all my Contacts?

That's like asking if the next version of Windows will have solitare on it. More than likely but unless you are directly involved with creating the update, you can't really answer the question.

The only true answer is "We will all have to wait and see."

If you sync your contacts with your gmail account it will sync after the update. Far as all your other settings n app, I'd say not, too many changes between 2.1 n 2.2. but ya never know lol. I'd back every thing up to be safe ;)

one more thing to think about....on the optimus the latest was 2.2.1 factory ship and require more complicated things to do just to root the phone, might be the same way with the tap out, thats probably one reason no one has backup the rom yet.

The Optimus requires different methods because LG pushed a firmware update that nullified z4root being able to work.

lol oh ok. I see what you mean. Hopefully by the end of the night there should be a rom Laying around some where? RIGHT?

Jazziette hasn't logged on since March 15th, she's been busy with real life stuff. The thread was never intended to be only her updating it. Everybody chips in.

When final info on the update is out, a mod is likely to update the original post, although no expectations should be set for Jazz's panache on such edits. ;)

I just went in to pay my bill. And of course had to ask about the update. It was supposed to be out today to go with the release of the Tap Out version. He got an email on Tuesday from Metro saying they are having problems with the update and that it would be late. But they didn't give a date. We are supposed to get a text when it does come out with instructions on how to update (it should be over the air).
The guy I go to is knowledgeable and has always been straight up with me. The last time I asked about it (over a month ago) he told me he hadn't heard anything yet.

Just wanted to l let everyone know what I just heard from a pretty reliable source. It's coming soon!

If your 2.1 is rooted, download an app called "link2sd". I have a Huawei Ascend android 2.1 through MetroPCS and this app works great for me. Only works if your phone is rooted, if it isn't use z4root. Do the permanent root. You can unroot if you ever need to take it back in or flash it to factory. (dont quote me on that part, never tried it just researched online).

Once your rooted, Just load link2SD from the market.
Then you can create a partition on your SD card with ROM Manager. This will allow you to run your apps off your SD card just like app2sd.

Then open the link2SD, choose an app (cannot be a system app), and then link it to SD. I even have the box checked for link dalvek or whatever it says. I love this app. i have about 200 apps now. before my phone got full on about 20 apps. Don't let the name trick you. It doesn't just link them. I runs it completely off your SD so no space is taken up. I am not sure about cache exactly or how that works but some cache is stored on the SD card too. You can't really mess it up on the SD card if you explore and stuff because it uses its own secret partition. The icons list on your phone just like they would normally. The application management treats it as if its on the phone too. You can always unlink it if you want or need the app to be on the internal memory and not SD. no harm no foul.

Hope it works for you :) sorry I wrote a lot. This is just exciting to me.

Sorry my above comment was replying to "Etrok". His last comment about trying to use app2SD. link2SD works instead on 2.1 rooted phones.

I was told by the sales guy in a metro store that there was some issues with the 2.2 and it was not gonna be released that they where working on 2.3 instead because of all the bugs with 2.2. But i dont know we can all just hope and pray that its soon right.

Ok I know this thread is for us cheap Ascend users but if anybody knows where I can find good info for modding an HTC windows phone over to android please point me in the right directions before I bury my friend alive for being extremely annoying. LOL. I've looked through the forum but it's taking toooooooo long to find anything through the search option. Also is it possible to switch my ascend from metro to cricket? Please help!!!! Otherwise I might just destroy every metro tower I can find because they are driving me up a wall anymore!!!

i know this is off topic but i was wondering if there was an app in the market for this forum? it would save alot of time for me

No apologies necessary,THANX for the information! I just d/l ROM MANAGER & LINK2SD.I had d/l LINK2SD long ago, but, couldn't use it due to the partition issue&not having access to a computer to partition the external SDcard. After partitioning w/ROM MANAGER,I moved all user apps to the SDcard using LINK2SD.

What a difference in moving all user apps to the external SDcard.

My phone was quicker just from rooting & removing bloatware, but now,its definitely at the next level, absolutely no lag & extremely quick in performing every function.
The process of moving user apps to external SD is extremely easy & for those who do not have access to a computer{just got my 1st laptop 3wks. ago, still learning the ABC'S of computing} ,it's not needed.
I highly recommend d/l ROM MANAGER & LINK2SD to those who are rooted but do no want to install a custom ROM.

Again,many thanks to BOREDGUY.
