Root **Official** Droid X encrypted bootloader and efuse thread

can u guys really hold off from updating when Froyo update comes :P
the temptation

its a matter of using the wifi hotspot for free, along with many other features youre not supposed to.

versus

vzw controlling what you do and charging you for hotspot.

Ya that is F'ing redicuolous to charge 20 bucks on top of an already expensive 30 dollars a month! And it also has a 2gb cap! WOW who in there right minds would buy that service?!?!?!?

It would be like having a PC without Administrator privileges

I'm not knocking those that want it. I can understand the temptation. I'm just saying..the phone does everything I want it to do out of the box.

Now, that said..this is my first smartphone, and i'm definitely the poweruser type when it comes to PC's. So down the road, my view may change. If so, i'll just buy a more easily modified phone next time around.

I'm still getting it, I'll be out of town on business but I'll still waiting outside VZW in downtown Chicago the day it drops, its less than a block from my Hotel.

I think root will get me just about everything I need out of this phone and I have no doubt it will be rooted pretty quickly. I don't think you need a custom ROM for overclocking, hotspots and tethering which is all I plan on doing but if the phone doesn't meet my needs, I have 30 days to return it.

I read from XDA that if its rooted u can use Wireless tethering just not flashing Roms

thats great if true.

think of this:

stock froyo from moto will increase performance 2-4 times according to google.

a custom froyo rom cooked by a dev will make that 3-6 by removing fluff such as motoblur and blockbuster, further tweaking, add more functions, etc.

Here are some quotes from his Twitter btw:

"its just plain evil, locked/signed/encrypted. check my last tweet to see how shitty it is"

"i tried doing system pull but it said skiping on a few files" <--- this is how locked down the droidx is, you cant even do a system pull."

"dont buy a droid x expecting root right awaay...."

Droid X Rooted already?

i broke down and registered xD

this is the "mysterious tweet" guy :P

the root we will have is actually an (un)offical root, by that i mean an sbf file that has su.

Note: it should be known that this is just what ive been told, but this guy has never told me something that didnt happen
biggrin.gif

There was an OTA update already. That signed file is still vulnerable to the same exploit that got the original Droid rooted.

It is no wonder they did this. With all of the people tethering their phones and not paying for the bandwidth they are abusing, you all act shocked now that they are clamping down.

Greedy children ruin the free ride.

I totally disagree. Rooting (or having access to the Bootloader specifically) is like having Microsoft's code for Windows. You can't get it, so you use Linux instead.

No. Rooting is acquiring Root user permissions. Changing the boot loader and flashing the ROM is another level entirely. You need Root access to get to the boot loader, but that is where it ends.

On a normal computer, the hard drive is not encrypted, so changing the OS is an easy matter. BUT, if you were to protect the area where the boot loader resides and tell the firmware/BIOS to only look there for the OS, then hardware encrypt the drive partition and firmware with a key, you have the situation we face with the Droid X.

Someone on Twitter asked the guy:

"That's shitty news. Think this will turn devs off from rooting quickly?"

to which he replied "it'll be a pain to root..a very big pain to root"

Well folks, it looks like the initial predictions were correct. It appears that we have someone confirming that the boot loader is indeed signed. In essence, wave goodbye to the possibility of custom ROMs ever being available for the Droid X. There's always the long shot that we'll see a work around, but I think everyone in the know will tell you it's more like a super infinity-length long shot.

It seems there are also conflicting reports concerning root access. It appears some folks think they have it and some folks think it will be extremely difficult to obtain.

Where did I get all this info? ---> http://androidforums.com/motorola-d...-may-rooted-but-has-encrypted-bootloader.html

OP Updated.

aaaaaaand my night is ruined. I really really didn't want to have to consider the Fascinate, but I guess I've got no choice now. Thanks for the info just4747 :S
