Root **Official** Droid X encrypted bootloader and efuse thread

Concerning all this "We own the device - we should be able to hack it" argument. Think about this. If you own your house, you expect to be able to access any part of it, right? To be able to use any part of it as you want right?

Guess what....you don't.

Virtually every utility coming into your house has a locked interface. Certainly at least the power meter and interface is locked. Does anyone complain about that? Gaining access to those areas would even allow people to bypass the meter and steal electricity. Do you as a homeowner have a right to do that? The meter is on your property afterall! No you don't have any rights to do that. It is against the law in fact.

Just because you buy something does not give you unlimited rights in some cases. The fact is that rooting a phone does open the possibility for a user to steal from their provider. (Wireless tethering without additonal fees, accessing proprietary and intellectual property, etc). So clearly the manufacture and service provider have the right to protect their intellectual property and also prevent users from stealing from them.

Just my 2 cents.....

A house is completely different then a phone...;)

I am starting to understand the grief of not being able to hack your phone due to some arguments here. I don't see it as a deal breaker, but that's just me.

Anyway, seeing as i am not very familiar with this more technical aspect of android, what's this situation standing at? I know it hasn't been rooted as of yet, but is the possibility of it happening getting better? Any other good sites to keep tabs on this?

Some have confirmed that it is the same BL and security as the Droid Milestone. Which has been cracked, if I am not mistaken.

EDIT: Milestone not DINC! Sorry.

Some have confirmed that it is the same BL and security as the Droid Incredible. Which has been cracked, if I am not mistaken.

Unlikely since the Incredible is made by HTC as opposed to Motorola, I would imagine they if they were going to choose any bootloader they would go with the stronghold that seems to be the Milestone BL.

I guess anything is possible though

UGh, I meant the Milestone, my B. :D

This thread isn't about whether or not you want the BL unlocked, just news, updates things of that nature. No more arguing please.

While I agree that this thread needs to be about new and updates, I would like to be able to defend why this even matters. Especially when people come in here telling us to quit "whinning". This matters to most of us in here. I don't go into threads where people are happy with the phone stock and tell them to get their heads out of the clouds and that they are idiots for not wanting to root their phone. I feel the same courtesy should be extended to us.

I thank you and the other mods for making this a great place to come a engage in civil debate. You guys do a fantastic job! :D

In case yall havent heard, .604 updates the recovery and the bootloader.

I would hold off on updating as long as u can. I had a theory about that when the whole eFuze thing popped off. I wondered if the OTA might have updated bootloaders in them if ppl were saying blowing the eFuze would brick the phone.

I wonder if every X update will have an updated bootloader....then again, an updated bootloader could mess around and have a hole in it...lol

EDIT: Seems there might be nothing useful in the new update for root access.

The DroidX WILL be rooted - it's just a matter of time (hopefully not too long). :D Hopefully, we'll be able to get around the signed bootloader, but that is a different ball of wax entirely.

I'm hoping to help with the root process as soon as I receive my X... Still waiting.

There's a video on WonderHowTo that shows how to hack (or simply gain access) to the Droid X bootloader. I suppose most have figured this out, but just in case, here's the video.

Thanks for the update jroc, this is important for everyone to consider: if you do install the update, I believe there is no way to get back to the original version (someone please confirm or deny if this is correct). This could be a bad thing if someone finds an exploit for the earlier version, however I have no idea if that's even a remote possibility at this point. Like I said, it's something to consider.

If you're wondering where this info originated, I did see Birdman's tweet it, but there are probably other sources too.

I haven't messed around with any X coding to know for sure, but "theoretically" thats probably correct, unless you had an offical Motorola RUU that would take you back to stock. And the only way I know to get around that would be to have a way to bypass the encryption in order to be able to flash a firmware package. That would be the key in going back to stock if there was some sort of loophole closed inside any OTA update that motorola issues. It was the same kinda thing that happened with the EVO when people updated, and then realized that it killed unrevoked, and they had a hard time figuring out how to get back to stock. I don't know how/if they fixed that, but me personally as a general rule if you have root, or expect to get root NEVER DO AN OTA UPDATE. Just my 2 cents.

Why is this thread such garbage. Rooting is different than loading different roms from what ive heard. Why cant have someone focus first on just getting a damn root on this phone?

Believe me, there are people working on getting root. But root alone without custom ROMs is always just one OTA update away from being lost. Of course you don't have to update, but without custom ROMs you'll be stuck on old, potentially buggy software versions.

If you can have custom ROMs, then people can create new custom ROMs with all the fixes and improvements necessary and still retain root.

ok thanks. it just seemed like everyone was running around like a chicken with their heads cut off about this issue

This is what the update was...

Why do you think Motorola spent time and countless employee hours into developing eFUSE? They are trying to protect the consumer I believe. Also trying to protect their product and software.

LOL they didn't develop the eFuse I believe IBM did. Protect their product? Maybe, to protect us NEVER.

There are so many holes in this logic. So by your logic we should take everything big brother gives us and use it the way big brother tells us. If you wanna be a lemming go ahead. Better yet get an Iphone. Android is definitely not the right place for you to be

Yeah get an iphone then bitch you can't jail break it and you'll be just like Jreed2560. At least then you won't be a lemming .

Jreed Motorola isn't BIG BROTHER. They're a company that made a product. If you don't like how they make that product then don't buy it in the first place. With all your ranting about Big Brother and lemmings I hope you didn't by the DX. Wouldn't want to look like a lemming or worse.

I also love how you think Android is some sort of cult that only the people that think like you are worthy enough to belong and then accuses him of being a lemming. Oh the irony.

Motorola already released a statement saying the X will not brick. eFuse is not active on the phone.

I think the more accurate statement is efuse is active but it doesn't brick the phone. It just sends it back to the bootloader until a signed ROM is used. But it is definately active according to Motorolas release.

deleting post. I do not wish to argue anymore. If you don't want to root, don't. Just stop trying to convince me (or others) that we should take the device as is.
