Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

Hmmm so when they say the update is available in Asia/Europe/UK etc. is this network-dependant (i.e. actual location of the handset) or perhaps the origin of the handset? e.g. my handset is an unbranded version purchased from Singapore, but I use it in New Zealand. Would I still get the update?

Ok Im a complete noob but why Is there a prelim update? And why not the full thing straight away?
HTC says the current Android 1.5 version does not provide the features required to update to 2.1, that's why they shove out a preliminary update first. Why? Nobody (except HTC engineering) seems to know...

A complete random guess, but I'm hoping this preliminary update is to allow the flasing of the hero without data lose, otherwise it seems rather pointless and they should just make the full ROM available to download from their site now.

OTA updates apparently started today in the Benelux with the preliminary update. Note that the hero checks every two weeks or so for updates. That means it takes another 2 weeks after this preliminary update to get 2.1. If you can't wait that long, there are tricks to get the hero to poll manually (just google for them!).

Jev, I can't for the life of me find how to poll manually. Any chance you can explain or post a link? Cheers!

From what I've seen it's been mentioned but nobody seems to know the actual code.

I've seen someone post a ridiculous*#*##*(various numbers)*

For a start it should be *#(numbers)#

But as for which numbers are needed, I can't see anything.

On my Nokia it was *#0000# to choose the option to check for updates but needless to say I've already tried that!

Has anyone heard anything from Orange? cause as we know..one thing is HTC releasing the rom, and another is the network provider. Im on orange here in spain..so i guess ill have to wait until orange release the update right?

Is this still going to be around hte 18th?

Also, has anyone actually updated officially yet? if so..was it worth the wait..i mean honestly..was it really? Is your Hero that much better now? can you do things you couldn't do before that you actually use now??

Can't you just go into the settings and tell it to check? I haven't got 1.5 anymore to check, but the option's there on 2.1.
Only option I see is to have it download automatically, prompt before download or never download; nothing about making check if there's a download waiting before it would anyway.

Unless there is somesort of hidden "engineer" style menu the only options available relate to how to handle a firmware update (download, prompt or neither)

There's no option to check for updates there and then.

EDIT: mpw beat me to it :p

someone said there was a way to trick the phone in to checking cause it only checks every other week. but i can not find a way ?

my question is because i have always on mobile network turned off to save battery power if the phone gets to the point when it is supposed to check will it wait for me to unlock it before it does the check or will i miss out?

I got bored of waiting so ive installed the ROM based on the Taiwanese update for the time being, only annoying thing is that i cant calibrate the keyboard like you could on 1.5, dunno whether this is something to do with the rom or 2.1 itself
Im still gonna update to the offical 2.1 when it arrives for orange UK owners :)

You certainly can, it's in the same place as 1.5 in Text input settings, down the bottom.

has anyone actually updated officially yet?

Only if they're in Taiwan, as that's the only locale that has received a GSM update to date.

I'm running a ROM derived directly from that update though, so I guess it could be described as "semi-official".... it's more-or-less exactly what we'll see in Europe.

if so..was it worth the wait..i mean honestly..was it really?
Yes.

can you do things you couldn't do before that you actually use now??
Sure. Does being able to use the latest versions of apps that I paid for months ago count? :)

I only tried it out in one direction, but yes bluetooth file transfer seems to work perfectly now :)

One reason that hero will never get 2.2 officially is that it cannot run it because of old hardware and since legend has a slightly beefed professor with the same core as hero (600 MHz vs 528MHz) it would probably have to struggle like the hero.....IF that is at all a valid argument and not just sales babble for "we wont bother upgrading, buy a new phone"..

Hmadsen

I've never seen hardware requirements for 2.2 so I don't see why that would be a reason. I hope we do get 2.2 though due to the improved JIC offering much faster apps, something that a limited CPU machine like the Hero would massively benefit from.

I hope 2.1 -> 2.2 shouldn't be too awkward as it's only a point release and not a whole version change like 1.5->2.0. However that could just be wishful thinking.

Anyway, UK Orange owner here still waiting...

HTC's Benelux regional director has left a teasing tweet this morning.

(Translated)

@markmoons

Beautiful day today! World Cup starts, Nexus One is available in the Netherlands and ...

Does it include usable bluetooth stack? Or is it, as on 1.5, just a marketing feature? :)

My BT headset works perfectly, just as it did with 1.5. Other than that I can't say, sorry. Others have reported file xfer working but it's not something I have much use for.

No but it was reported that Holland/Belgium would receive the initial update this week.

Based on the tweet that I posted above, it looks like that may happen today.

It'll be the first update in Europe so it's a big step either way if it does happen.

Fingers crossed.

I'm completely guessing, but the fact that the Hero only checks for changes once a fortnight and HTC are (seemingly) pushing the updates out on a Friday can't be coincidence...can it?
